Tips for early morning exercise?

Does anybody have any tips or tricks for waking up early to exercise?  I have to get up at 5 to exercise before work and I feel like I have tried everything!  I moved the alarm, I went to bed extra early, I set everything out the night before so all I have to do is get up and go, but I still never wake up!

When I do get up I'm furious with myself for not getting up!  Its frustrating!  Has anyone had the same problem?

I still exercise in the evening, but I would love to work it into the morning so I would have more time to spend with my hubbie at night.

Wow... I was just thinking the same thoughts.  I have to get up at 5:30 if I want to work out and I just can't do it.  I was doing ok with making it out of bed for a few weeks, then got sick.  By the time I was done fighting off a nasty cold/flu bug three weeks later, I was well out of my routine.  Then, "spring ahead" happened and I'm having trouble getting up in time for class, let alone early enough to get a workout in.

It's really frustrating... I know that I had more energy when I was working out regularly, but I can't seem to get my poop in a group to get back in the habit.  Sigh.  I'm really starting to think about keeping a caffeine pill beside the bed so I can just pop it and go... but that's far from the healthy approach I want to take.

I guess this isn't exactly helpful, but I just wanted to commiserate.
All I can tell you is that when you get to be 45, 50 or older, it's almost impossible to sleep in - I don't know why - I just can't any more....so, I will enjoy the fact that I am up and exercising at 5:30a and don't have to be to work til 9:00a.  Finally, a reason to be happy about being 50!!!  LOL!!
My alarm is set for 3:45 and I give myself until 4 am.  After that I have to hustle, so that I am in the shower by 5:15.  I have been doing this since November and before then if you would have asked me if I would ever do something like this, I would have flat out told you no way.  I gave myself one month to get in the routine of things....there was no excuse, I HAD to do it.  After that, it got much easier as a sort of "habit" developed.  Some mornings that warm bed still really really feels good :).
The single biggest thing you can do to make it easier to get up early is (and I know you don't want to hear this, 'cause I hate it too) TO GO TO BED EARLY.

Yup. That's it. This sucks especially hard if, like me, you're a night person.
i would absolutely agree with behanna.  i'm a night person by nature so i usually have to force myself to turn off the lights and go to bed at night.  there is nothing that sabotages my workout more than being fatigued. 
I know I know... early, early, early... lol....  I tried to go to bed at 10 to get up by 5 but that must not have been enough time since I slept right through...  Maybe I will try 9:30 and see if that helps...  Sheesh...  I should just cuddle up and go to sleep after the 6'oclock news lol!

I truly want to do this though...  I have committed to making a lifestyle change and I think this will be a necessary and positive part.  I just have to hold myself more accountable!

Sorry, can't help, but can empathise.  And I don't agree with the go to bed early (although, obviously, there are limits).  I have found that if I get up before 6.15 I seriously struggle.  I'm fine at 6.15, but 6am is almost impossible.  And going to bed even a couple of hours earlier doesn't help.  I discovered that in my previous gym before work days (when I lived over the road from the gym).  Now have decided to walk to work and go for a swim there, so don't have to go so early.
I'm trying to get up early too. 

I have 3 alarms... my stereo across the room I get up & turn off before returning to bed, my tv which I also seem to forget to hide the remote for, and my cell phone that I'm learning to sleep through.

Tomorrow I will try again and I have high hopes :o)
Instead of focusing on the morning routine.  Maybe focus on the evening routine.  I mean try reading at night this usually helps me fall asleep earlier.  No caffiene past a certain point in the evening.
I get up at 5 am every morning to work out; in the beginning it was TOUGH!  I kept telling myself, FAT and TIRED or FIT and TIRED?  (my conscience and I are often at odds; she's very stubborn - but then again, so am I!)

I totally agree with behanna too, you've got to get to bed earlier.  I usually get to bed around 9 or 9:30.  This is tough because I also go to school at night - but it does get easier!!!  Keep on trying, don't give up.

I know that sometimes it's tiring after a day at work, but I find that if I do a workout in the evening, I get more energy... can you fit in a workout in the evening instead??

Or maybe your lunch hour - although that doesn't sound appealing to me haha.

I find that I'm more motivated to go in the mornings, but like you, I just can't get up. When it gets to the evening I think, blaaah, I've been at Uni and working all day, I just want to eat and relax and sleep, but if I do FORCE myself to the gym, I feel revitalised!!

I find it almost impossible to go to bed early, because I like to go out!! haha, another good reason to gym it in the evening instead.
1. I give myself time to wake up gradually.  Right now, I'm setting my alarm for 5am, knowing that I have to get up by 5:30am.  This works much better for me than just setting the alarm for 5:30am.

2. Start gradually.  First, I made a commitment to exercise just 15 minutes each morning.  I did that for several weeks until it became a habit.  Only then did I stretch out the time.  Now, I tell myself that if I get up late, I can at least do 15 minutes.  There is no longer an excuse to skip the exercise.

3. I focus on how good I feel at the end of the exercise.  No matter what the other demands are on my time, it's not too much to ask to carve out 30 minutes for myself to feel good like that.
For me, its the act of getting out of bed that's the problem. Not sure if its the same for you or not (not sure if you physically don't hear the alarm or whatever and physically don't wake up, or if you just can't get out of bed).

Anyway, I had to train myself that I could not use the snooze or reset the alarm for a later time - if it went off, I immediately got out of bed. I had to train myself to have that reflex that alarm means getting out of the bed.

Once out of bed, I head immediately to the bathroom and turn the full light on. When my body registers "light", I wake up. Then I pull on my clothes and head to the gym. At first, I also spashed cold water on my face before heading out, but I don't need to anymore.

I love working out in the morning. :) I still sometimes have to tell myself that skipping the gym is not an option (if I lay in bed and think about not going, I generally won't go).
And I thought that waking up at 7am to work out was early!  I do get dizzy though and a nutritionist recommended gatorade.  Maybe if I kept the gatorade by my bed and took a sip when the alarm when off I could get a sugar high enough to get me out of bed and for me to not be dizzy anymore while exercising.  (I dont eat before I exercise)
I'm a slave to the snooze alarm....  I think mine might even have a worn out spot on it!  I wake up momentarily but hit the snooze without really thinking and am back to sleep in seconds.  I have even set alarms down the hall hoping the walk will give me time to realize what I am doing, but I usually just snooze right through those!  I am going tot ry to implement the no snooze rule tomorrow...  I'll let you know how it goes!  Thanks for all the feedback!
ughhhh I have this problem, too. I work 9-5, then go to class 530-930 every night, so the only time i can work out is at 630, and lately I just cannot get out of bed. before i even realize it, i've snoozed for over an hour!

i'm going to try moving my alarm clock to the other side of the room.

the only equipment i have at home is my exercise bike, but if i'm going to watch something on tv at night, i'll pedal while i'm watching, that way if I DO mess up and don't make it to the gym the next morning i feel like i at least did SOMETHING.
1. Mentally tell yourself youare getting up at what ever time you wnt to get up in the morning.. say it out loud if you have to... it works really.

2. Use more than one alarm, the first a normal and the second a loud one that you have to get out of bed to turn off.

Trust me this works.
Get your husband to go work out with you in the evening. :)
the best motivation for getting up early to go to the gym is that you burn 200xs more calories by going as soon as you wake up! that always gets me out of bed and to the gym in the AM. 
and remember, once you get into a habit of waking up early and going, it becomes 2nd nature. waking up at the same time everyday will become easier as you do it more b/c your body will be used to it.
