I weigh 175 and am 5'8''... but I dont think im fat!

Ok, I weight 175 and im 5'8'', like I just said above.  But, I have alot of muscle and I am pretty in shape.  I can run a mile in 8 minutes, I can jog 3 miles, I can do 50 situps without stopping, 30 pushups without stopping, and I mow a couple yards every day. I'm not perfect but I don't think I'm anywhere near fat.  However, I went running today and, like I said I CAN run an 8 minute mile, but it about killed me.  Is it because I weigh 175? Is that fast for someone with my build? I think I could lose about 15 pounds at most, will running do that or will I have to mix it up? Sorry lots of questions but I have no idea what I'm doing!

Got to keep at it, and get your body used to it. ..  or rather your lungs. If you smoke..  try to quit.

I would say in response to your question is 5'8" and 175 lbs considered over weight I guess that depends on who you are asking.  Based on a Body Mass Index yes...

BMIs below 20.7 (for men) and 19.1 (for women) are considered unhealthy.

 

However, if you think you are fine then thats all that counts (my opinion).  Also I would highly recommend doing both an aerobic & weight training program.

Keep in mind, the BMI calculation is completely flawed and not to be trusted.  Someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger would easily fail it because of his weight compared to his height, because it fails to take into account, what if that weight is muscle, not fat?  Don't worry about a dumb calculation.  175 can be a perfect weight for someone your height if that weight is mostly lean muscle and not excess fat.  Hell, even if it is alot of fat, it still falls right around the top of the healthy range, maybe a bit high.  But you said you are in shape with a good amount of muscle.  Don't worry about losing weight.

Yeah... totally disregard the whole BMI thing. It's near useless. =)

A very muscular person could top the BMI charts and still be healthy. Based on what you said you're very strong and fit, so go by how you feel. Unless you have other symptoms of physical problems exacerbated by weight, like early signs of diabetes.

Congratulations on your overall level of fitness!!! Your lack of running endurance has nothing to do with your weight. It's just about running endurance! You need to practice that separately if you want to get good at it. If you want to build up, you need to gradually increase.  One common problem is that people start out too fast. If you can run one mile at 8 minutes, but want to run 3 miles you need to do them slower.  Dial the speed down, even run/walk to start, and build up to the distance you want over time.  Then train to increase your speed at distance.

 

I'm 5' 6 1/2" and y dieal weight is between 165-175. i use to play varsity squash and I don't smoke. I was maintaining around 171-172 when I was still going to school and on the team. My BMI was close to 30 but I knew it was wrong. Check my pics and u'll know how "obese" i was at aroun 170.

Exactly.  I'm really surprised to find that so many people rely on such a pointless measurement.  Hell, to get some forms of medical insurance, you actually need to fall within a certain BMI range, which is rediculous.

It sounds like you're very healthy.  If you're happy, don't worry about it.  If you would feel more comfortable with a lower BMI, maybe just try cutting your calories a little.  It sounds like you are already very active, so I think that a little portion control would go along way for you.  Good luck!

hey thanks guys! I have to get ready for college softball in the next month and i guess im just really stressed out about whether i will be able to keep up with all the skinnier, faster people.  But I will work up to it slowly and just keep on truckin!

I'm a girl and I'm the exact same size as you - 5'8" and around 175.  I don't know if you are a guy or a girl, but either way, I am pretty happy with my size, considering that I used to weigh 240 pounds 3 years ago!  I am proud of the weight I've lost, and have maintained my current weight for about 1 1/2 years now.  My husband and kids all said that I am thin enough, and they don't want me to lose more.  They say I would be too thin.  While I don't really know about that, I feel great.  People are usually suprised when I tell them my weight, saying that I look like I weigh less.  What I'm trying to say is, if you feel healthy you probably are!  I don't worry about bmi's - everybody's different!

idk why you think you could only lose 15 lbs, I am your height and weigh 38lbs less than you... and I still have work to do.  

That being said, if you don't think you need to loose weight then... don't lose any  :)

i'm 5'7" and 134.  my bmi is 21, but i still feel fat!  i know i don't need to lose any weight though.  i just need to tone up.

if you don't think you are overweight, don't worry about it.  your running time & distance will improve over time.  :D

I think the BMI is a bunch of crap and is not in any way accurate.  According to the BMI, my brother is obese, yet he has a body fat percentage of less than 12.  Now how is that possible if he is obese?  Everyone should remember that muscle weighs more than fat and the BMI doesn't take that into account.  If you speak to your doctor, most would tell you what a healthy weight would be for you instead of relying on inaccurate information.

BMI works for one class of people: sedentary people. If you're not an athlete of any type, then BMI can be a reasonable measure of how far out of whack you are.

For athletes, body fat percentage is going to be a better measure. A muscular person who is 5'8" and 175 pounds is Just Fine. You in particular might want to work on your cardio conditioning (you may never want to run a marathon, but a better base of cardio will help you to recover from your other workouts faster, and will also help you work out harder and longer when you do), but it doesn't sound like you're fat.

I'm 5'8" and was up around 180 last summer, and I am not exceptionally muscular (except for my legs, from bicycling). In my case, I did (and still do) have some fat to lose. I'm personally aiming for the "cyclist physique," which puts my target weight slightly south of 150. Different goals, different body types.

Don't sweat it too much.

i'm 5'8" too, and when i weighed 167, i was definitely fat.  now, at 146, i'm much fitter, but still fat.  last fall i got down to 138 but was less fit.  i wouldn't have described myself as fat, but i had fat.  it's all relative.  but cardiovascular fitness is pretty important to health.

im 5'8 and weigh 175 too...but im not fat either....im mean i have a little bit of a stomach but i dont think im fat either...and my friends say im not either...idk...i just dont think i am

I would NEVER call you fat, PG!!!  You look fantastic and quite healthy in your gallery pics.  But, like me, most of your pictures are head shots so I guess you could be hiding something!  But I rather doubt it.

But I know what you mean about 'having fat' even if you're at a healthy BMI.
