Does yoga make you gain weight?

Quote  |  Reply

I read today that doing yoga slows your metabolism and makes you gain weight. Is this true? It seems weird because yoga can make you gain muscle and from what I know more muscle=faster metabolism...

To me yoga is stretching and can help with flexibility. I personally am not into it but I use to do gymnastics as a kid and still am very flexible and like stretching (but I don't think I am doing yoga per se). I could prolly out flex/stretch my yoga regular sister (or maybe we are matched). But I don't think yoga helps or hinders enough to worry, it is a form of meditation with stretching, if you enjoy it do it. I think in combination with exercise is where you find results with yoga but you can exercise without yoga for results too.

The only activity that makes you gain weight is eating. No, yoga doesn't make you gain weight.

If yoga or meditation made you gain weight all Tibetan monks would be obese people.

So the Buddhist religion, with all that fasting and vegetarian diet, has nothing to do with it :P ;)

And for the record, yoga does NOT make you gain muscle.  Muscle is very hard to add to your body.  The only way to do it is by lifting heavy stuff/ progressive overload.  If you are trying to lose weight I would limit yoga sessions and focus on strength training.

haha I figured I'd get called out for that. But it's besides the point!

Whoever it was that said Yoga makes you gain weight is an idiot.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
