Alcohol - Low Calorie / Low sugar options?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I am a university student who goes out and parties every now and then. I do not like wine. I am looking for a low calorie option that I can find in my local liquor store in Canada. I enjoy beer, coolers, champagne, rum, and whisky. I'm looking for something with not TOO many ingredients, and is fairly inexpensive.

Thanks,

dietally :)

Someone else recently asked about low-calorie drinks over on the Weight Loss forum and there are a bunch of suggestions on that thread: http://caloriecount.about.com/drinking-ft1790 71

Thanks! I'm new to this, so I don't really know where to look for topics yet :)

I should warn you that there were some very uninformed answers (bordering on myths) on that thread. So, if something sounds too good to be true, you should check it out elsewhere. One person was touting a low cal bloody mary, but if you got into the details, it only had one ounce of vodka (a shot is 1.5 oz) and 3 or four oz of the 'low cal mixer." Who drinks a 4 oz bloody mary?

A couple of things to consider:

pure ethanol has 7 cal/gram

80 proof is 40% ethanol

there are 28 grams in an oz

A jigger is 1.5 oz (some say 1.4), but many people use 2 oz of hard liquor in a home made drink.

(1.5oz)*(28 grams/oz)*0.40*(7 cal/gram)= 118 calories per shot. And that is without any mixer. And many hard liquors have other calories like sugar, in them too. So, vodka's for instance may not all be as low as 118 calories per shot.

If you are looking for healthy ingredients in a mixer, you should get one that doesn't have the alcohol already in it, so there will be a label with ingredients listed. In the US, if it has alcohol in it, they don't have to tell you the ingredients and will usually use cheap things like high fructose corn syrup as the sweetener.

Of your listed choices, I'd go with the whiskey and just add water if you don't do shots. In that other thread, there were some great suggestions about selzer water, etc too.

But, sometimes you just should forget about the whole calorie thing and go with what you really like. (come to think of it, I haven't had a black russian in years, damn)

Light beer.  Tastes nasty so you'll drink it slowly. ;)

I think that this is a valid suggestion!

Alcohol is a super sugar, 7 cals per gram so less calories means less alcohol.  Most mixers have sugar also so stick to low alcohol beer, wine, or liquor with water or sugar free mixers and keep the alcohol to a minimum.

thanks, AG.  i knew i could count on you...

make your mixers calorie-free... I like vodka with crystal light mixes (you mix it in water as usual and then add the shot) (cherry or fruit punch with a splash of the sunrise orange is pretty dang good. :))

or jagerbombs with sugar free redbull. Don't have more than 2 redbulls per night though, because you'll never sleep at best, and you'll have terrible anxiety at worst.
