Anyone else get sick after eating too much sugar?

Quote  |  Reply

Although I feel much better when eating healthy food I do have a weakness for baked sugar goodness like donuts and cake.  Like most, if I eat one cookie I want 10 .. then eat 15!  I know I'm going to feel really ill after but I eat it anyway thinking, "I won't feel too sick this time and this is REALLY GOOD!"  Does anyone else feel really sick and bloated after eating to much sugar too fast?

If you have large cravings for sugar and sugar makes you feel sick.  It could be a sign of diabetes, or a pre diabetic condition.  You should be very careful in going on sugar binges, especially if it makes you sick.  I would recomend seeing a doctor, to make sure that you do not have diabetes or a pre diabetic condition.

I'd agree - rule out any sort of diabetic condition, but I can definitely say that I can no longer pack away the sugar like I could when I was a kid, and I'm perfectly normal - neither hypo- nor hyper-glycemic.

I used to be able to (and did!) eat a whole movie-sized bag of Skittles in one sitting, and now one usual check-out counter pack makes me shaky. Sigh. Price of growing up, right :P

I suppose as sad as that is, it's in some way good that I feel ill after too much sugar, as it does keep me (usually) from overindulging in sweets. I know what you mean, though - I've got a real weakness for baked goods. Plus, I really love to bake! I try to limit my baking to when I know I'll have lots of help eating the results, like making cookies at night, then taking them to work in the morning. Also, I try never to buy baked sweets. I tell myself that I'll enjoy them more if I make them myself, then I get too lazy to cook. Really limits my cookie consumption!

I try to avoid sugar as much as possible... but every so often I do have a day where I indulge a little too much, and yes I instantly feel sick and regret putting that garbage in my mouth.

I get all nausous and suddenly my heart starts beating faster and I have that "sugar rush" which I know will be gone in a few minutes, leaving me nothing but drained, craving more sugar and with a bunch of extra empty calories that I didn't need.

Also after I eat sugar sometimes my thighs 'tiggle' I dont know if it's in my head or what but it makes me feel that all those empty sugar calories are going straight to my thighs

I feel ya on the sugar cravings! I too could eat 15 cookies, but I'd feel sick lol. I tend to not tolerate sugar as well as I did when I was a kid. Always have hada sweet tooth. I used to polish off one of those boxes of Rainbow Nerds and feel fine! I ate a DQ blizzard the other day and it was good but the sweet got to me. Same with the cookie I ate yesterday. I crave sweet all the time. It's kind of annoying lol. Oh sugar you are so evil!

Thanks Everybody!  It makes me feel better to know that I'm not alone in my sugar wows =0)  And I have made an appointment with my doc to make sure I'm not prediabetic or anything, I hadn't even thought of that one.  So thanks!

Unless you're sitting there simply spooning the sugar out of a bag and eating it I think you're probably reacting to the combined effect of the foods that contain all the sugar.  By the sounds of it, starchy, fatty, stodgy as well as sugary foods..... eat an entire packet of biscuits or overdo it on the doughnuts and anyone's going to feel a bit sick and bloated.  How many of our mothers warned us precisely that?  "Don't eat any more of those cakes or you'll make yourself sick!"

I'd also take it as a warning that your body doesn't cope well when asked to excessive amounts of insulin..... and that could point to health problems in the future.

Yes, but who wouldn't feel sick after eating too much sugar?

I've been this same way all my life!  I've been a sucker for sweets since I was a toddler.  I crave sweets, I love sweets, and I can't stop eating them when I have them at my disposal.  It wasn't until I started college that I was tested for diabetes, after a couple bad incidents of dizzy spells, passing out and throwing up.  It turns out I'm hyperglycemic (not sure if I was born this way or if I developed a blood sugar disorder).

Turns out that poor eating habits, i.e. diets high in sugar, can actually lead you to DEVELOP a type of diabetes.  Yikes!

I would recommend limiting yourself on sugar intake, as it could have serious effects on your future health (I am not one to talk, my willpower when it comes to food is THE WORSE), and definitely getting tested for diabetes or any related conditions.

I can eat sugar no problem, however:

when I became a vegetarian I pretty much stopped bothering to get fast food cause I could barely eat any of it.  So now, if I ever have more than, like, a small fries- I feel so sick.

I actually get body inflammation and pain from eating too much sugar!  I can handle naturally-occurring sugars (like fruit), but if I eat too much real sugar (cookies, cakes, candy, etc), I get awful body pain about 12-18 hours later.  My body gets extremely tender and it hurts to the touch.  The pain wears off about 8 hours later but it's awful.  They thought it was gluten but I tested negative and went on an elimination diet and discovered the issue.  And I get extremely bloated as well.  Pretty scary what sugar can do to your body!!

Oh yeah...I LOVE LOVE LOVE candy corn (and just sweets in general) and I know I'll intend to eat just a handful and then end up eating way too much. Then my stomach will feel all queasy for a while. Luckily it doesn't last too long though.

I'm with you if I eat any sugar I feel even more hungry than if I ate nothing at all, so I try to avoid it.  I wish I could control it instead though but I'm convinced it is addictive and I already have too many addictions.  Maybe an addictive personalitity makes it harder?

I just started feeling this way in the last couple of days.  I pretty much cut all sugar from my diet, but sometimes , I will grab a cookie or a piece of cake.  This weekend it was both, and I ate a large amount of it.  2 pieces of cake in the afternoon, and 2 cookies after supper.  This sounds bad, but I hardly do it, and about half an hour later, I feel ill.  Not VERY ill, but my stomach is sweemish.

This scares me.  Hubby said it may be a combo of the lard they use to bake it, the large amounts of flour and sugar that i'm not used to eating anymore.  I'm glad I'm not alone in this....

You may have a yeast intolerance, I have that and I crave sugar especially when I have too much yeast in my gut, then the cravings gets real bad.  Once the yeast is contained, the cravings goes away.

Did you ever find a diagnoses for your issues? Ive taken blood sugar test and a 3hr Glucose test. All negative, but when I consume more sugar than carbs or protein I get a hot flush feeling, lightheaded, and it feels as if I have the flu. Hours later I will be better and even less time if I start consuming protein bars or peanut butter. The sensation is worse if the sugar is in liquid from such sodas or maple syrup. Ive heard some say these are pre-diabetic signs but wouldnt that show on a test? Thanks
