Bah! Food Scale = Bye Blissful Ignorance!

Quote  |  Reply

So. Half a cup of instant oatmeal is actually over 200 calories... I shook up the bag and weighed it three times. PSHT.
My "small" apples (as the bag claimed) were actually medium... which bugs me even though I counted it as medium anyway. =P

Anyone else get some mild disappointments?

waaaaait, which instant oatmeal?

or rather what was the alleged calorie content? 100, 130, or 160?

I find that potatoes are sometimes off....heavier than CC says a "small" should be....fruits the same way...

I often wonder how small an apple has to be to be concidered small..haha

About the apple, did you weigh it whole or did you take the cork out and then weigh it?  I think CC's weights are often only considering the edible part of the fruit.

Peanut butter; when I grabbed my tablespoon and filled it with peanut butter and put it on the scale I was very disappointed.  BTW, I did take into account the weight of the actual spoon.

Yes...which oatmeal???

The oatmeal was just a generic bulk store brand.

Peanut butter.. forgot about that one. What was the difference, valgoal? =P

This one doesn't actually surprise me as my bag of oatmeal claims 1/3 cup is 150 calories (because it thinks 1/3 cup is 40g; CC thinks it's 30g; my scale says 32g so now I get to eat extra oatmeal!  :-)).  If 1/3 cup is 150 cal then 1/2 cup is 225 cal.  Sadly, a lot of rounding happens on nutritional labels!

WTF my quaker oatmeal (just normal, not the instant kind) says its 150 for 1/2 cup, and I always measure my half cup to make it 1/2 cup exactly. I don't have a food scale...and I'm 20 so buying one and bringing it to college with me is completely awkward since I live with 3 other females with no calorie counting desires...and they are all party animals.

Ugh

Ha! I just saw this clip linked from the hungry girl site and it reminded me of this thread from the other day.

Happy weighing :)

Sorry for the delayed response...all I remember for sure is cursing the hell out of the pb jar and the scale and putting way too much pb back into the jar.  Cry
