basmati rice is EVIL!!!!

I just ate about a cup of basmati rice--did not bother checking the exact calorie count before eating it since I assumed it was about the same as regular white rice (208 per cup) so it would be OK. Then I go to check and it's 160 per 0.25 cups????!!! How could this be? then I've eaten 640 calories of rice?? talk about ruining my day!

yeah...Indian rice is SO HIGH CALORIE...  but it's because it's really, really yummy!  :)  Sorry...
Hi, is it 160 cal for .25 uncooked rice or cooked rice?
I think that's uncooked. It's somewhere around 160 calories for 3/4 of a cup cooked.
Calories in one cup cooked Basmati rice = 170.

You have to watch out for some rice and pasta information.  Many sources give you the calories in uncooked, many in cooked.  There is a big diference between a cup of cooked rice and a cup of raw!

Basmati is acutally really good. Its low GI and fragrant. its Jasmine you wanna avoid. I think its 1/4 c = 160 cal raw.
Basmati brown is even ebtter - nutrients
Basmati and i think its Mahatmata or something are the best as they are low GI. Therefore the most filling
If you want les cals from rice, either mix 1/2 1/2 with cabbage shredded and chopped or use instant - but instant has less nutrients and more sodium.

Yeah, I agree with the people who pointed out that the calories must be for a quarter cup uncooked, not cooked.

For anyone who hasn't tried basmati rice, if you want to try it, make sure you get the kind from India -- not America.  I tried that, and it's nothing special.  The Indian rice is aged, and that makes all the difference.

Yep, it's the uncooked 1/4 cup you're looking at - one cup cooked

Brown Basmati Rice  is even better!
Also, be aware that when you order basmati rice at an indian restaurant, it will most likely have been prepared with ghee (clarified butter). Often, the grains are sauteed briefly in ghee and the hot water is added along with any aromatic whole spice.

don't beat yourself up! Basmati is the LEAST evil rice around, and the only one considered a medium g.i (esp if you eat the brown one, it is a VERY good quality carb, one of the best and very high in fibre as carbs go).

the calorie count here is for uncooked rice b.t.w. You can eat a cupful of brown basmati and feel no guilt whatsoever.

I agree - I love the stuff. White rice makes me gag nowadays.

All rice, dry weight, is about 100 cals per oz.  Basmati is one of the better choices.
