The same way that sugar canes, beets, carrots have calories. Coffee beans naturally contain some nutrients.

There are around 5-7 calories in 16oz or so. It's almost nothing.

Those calories add up. One highly caffeinated day I consumed 60 calories worth of black coffee and artificial sweetener.

Coffee also has potassium in it -- at a few calories a pop, you get a decent hit of potassium.  If you drink coffee like I do, my 5-6 cups = 580+ potassium. For 12 calories... you'll survive

*shudders at the thought of my potassium levels.....*They are quite good, as in usually around the 3000-4000+ level.

I don't log my coffee, though I drink 1/2 to a full pot of black coffee, daily. I used to drink 1-2 pots per day when I worked the night-shift as a baker.

An extra 60 calories a day isn't going to hinder your weight loss.

coffee is also oily. but like everyone has said, it's nothing to get your knickers in a twist over. the margin of error for calorie counting is far greater than the calories in a few cups of coffee.

Being a bit of a coffee nut, the only real downside to coffee is caffeine. The half life of one 8oz cup of coffee is 5 hours. So if you figure you have any after say 3pm, you are going to be awake a while. Other wise, 5 calories per cup isn;t going to kill your diet. Actually, if you drink more than 4 cups/day, it works as a natural laxative. Upside, depending on how you look at it.

Even when I used to count calories almost obsessively a few years ago, I never counted black coffee or chewing gum. Caffeine boosts your metabolism a slight bit, the 5 or so calories consumed pretty much is burned off through thermogenesis .

Not something I would worry about, enjoy your black coffee!

It's less than 5 cal per serving, so it can be labeled as zero. It's pretty negligible though.  You'd need to drink a lot of coffee before it made a significant amount of difference... and by that time, you'd be really, really caffeinated.

Yeah, except she's not trying to lose weight.  She's recovering from anorexia...  C'mon sungiant.  You know that coffee is the last thing you need to worry about :/

Drink up! Coffee is also a dirutic (sp) and speeds up your metabolism! There are athletes that drink it before a work out. I dont log my coffee either for the simple reason my body prob burns more cals digesting it. I dont log sugar free gum either...it has 5 cals a pc. Again i am sure i am burning 5 cals just chewing it. (my oinions only!)

caffeine increases metabolic rate (slightly), but enough to make those extra whole 60 calories obsolete.

pssssst... they have decaf ;)

Wow always wonder this and now it makes sense, but very happy coffee has potassium

if 60 calories is an issue in a day, I would be re-vamping my eatting habits...just saying....

The hardest part is finding a good tasting decaf. Most decaf is processed with chemicals, that is why it tastes like crap.

Well I cut way down on coffee, use to drink whole pot bymyself, now 1-2 cups/day.  Working on my water intake now.  I struggle to drink water.
