why does Broccoli smell!

Quote  |  Reply
ok, so I cut up a bunch of broccoli yesterday so I can quickly toss it into a salad the day after and so on. However every time I chop broccoli in advance it smells like crazy! The first time I thought it had gone bad, but then last night it smelt in like an hour so I know, its not bad.. but why does it smell sooo bad?

Broccoli is a member of the cabbage family, the brassicas. Veggies in that family include brussels sprouts, turnip etc. when you cut them they emit small amounts of hydrogen sulfide (even more pungent when you cook them)  that is what you smell.  Try adding a hunk of chili pepper (or a slice of jalapeno) to the container to reduce the smell.

After you eat these kinds of vegetables, you'll likely produce high levels of methane (farts) that will also really stink!

LMAO!!!!  Amen!! Laughing

I've never heard of "brassicas", but have always refered to this vegetable family as the "crucifereous" types.  Interesting.

HAHAHA.. but this isnt bad for me to eat is it?

I love broccli to death, but yeah, usually stinky.  I find it stinks less thought if you don't cook it as long.

I think the worse smelling food is eggs!

Make sure you just eat lots of green veggies.  The longer you steam it the more vitamins and nutrients it loses.  Try to mix up the veggies.  I had a trainer make me eat lots of brocolli and to this day I'm still burnt out on it.  There's also the spray I can't believe it's not butter.  I used to spray some on my brocolli cuz it made it taste way better!
