Canned Soup Expiration Date

Quote  |  Reply

I have a can of cream of shrimp soup that has an expiration date of May 2009.  I had to order several cans online (probably a couple of years ago)  because it's not available locally, and I hate to toss it.  I use it for making a shrimp curry dip during the holidays.  Anyway, does anyone have any idea whether I can still use it?  Don't want to poison my family.  Undecided

Generally speaking its probably fine.  Canned food can las several years past the expiration day.  Is the can bulged at all?  If it is throw it out.  when you open it if it smells weird or has funky stuff growing on it toss it.

No, it's not bulged at all.  Since it's a cream-style soup, just wasn't sure.  I'll give it a shot come Thanksgiving.  Thanks very much for your response.

I am really weird when it comes to expiration dates and I would NOT eat it.  I am no engineer, but I would say they put expiration dates on those things for a reason....  =)

When in doubt--throw it out!

Darn it, anyway.  You're probably right.  Probably best to not take a chance.  Will just have to order some more, I guess.  Thanks, ilovewater.  I appreciate your response.

I know the feeling--I recently threw away about 4 cans of my favorite progresso soup because it was expired...sad day in the pantry!! =)

What makes it even worse, ilovewater, is that the soup is about $3.50 a can and is not available anywhere here, so I have to order it online.  Oh, well.  Along with some other ingredients, it makes a terrific French bread dip (albeit very high in calories).  I make it once a year at Christmas for my family, so it's worth it.  Laughing

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
