Do carrots really turn you orange,,,?
Hey i was just wondering (kind of a dumb question)- if there was any truth behind the saying that if you eat too many carrots you'll turn orange or if it is just a food myth because i am a carrot lover. I can go through those 2 lbs bags of carrots in like 5 days easily and people keep on telling me I am going to turn orange so i was just wondering if there was actually any truth behind this... and if it is bad to be eating the amount of carrots that I do, like can you overdose on vitamin A or C because I've had days where the analysis says I've eaten like 1000% of my Daily needs![]()
Thanks a lot for any replys![]()
It is true though.
I remember my dad getting a crazy idea to drink carrot juice each morning... and he made me do it too (I was maybe 8) and after two weeks my hands were completely orange! And the color woudn't go away for another few weeks. So yes, it can if you eat too much.
Pumpkin does this too. I know from first hand experience. When I first discovered canned pumpkin, I loved it so much I was having three or four cans a day, (insane!) on top of carrot sticks. I never turned bright orange, but one day I went to work and had three people tell me I was yellow looking.
Haha I came home from work thinking I had liver failure and was going to die. XD It took me another day to figure out it was beta-carotene poisoning.
A friend told me that baby carrots did not have as much nutrition as regular carrots. I did a google and found that baby carrots are washed with chlorine. That there normal color is white.
Since last week I have noticed that I love eating baby carrots. I am a bit concerned about turning orange.
But I do think that it is better to eat carrots than head out to my favorite eatery and have a big greasy hamburger with cheese.
The orange color did happen to my friend's baby. The baby loved carrots so her mom indulged her. She did not know anything was wrong till the baby started turning orange.
I used to eat the snack size bag of carrots. I ate one almost every single day for a year straight and i had to stop eating them because i was turning and orangy color =) i was starting to look like an umpa lumpa
Yeah girl! If shrimp can turn flamingos pink, why wouldn't carrots be able to turn us orange? :D
I used to be on a carrot binge(okay, well not a binge) but you know what I mean...for awhile. But thank god, I'm over that phase in my life. I think I actually was starting to show an orange tint to my skin!
Oh and by the way, I would refrain from eating too many carrots...lots of vitamin A, vitamin A overdose can cause liver damage! So be careful.
yep, im living proof
im not fluorescent orange or anything but my skin has a definite orange tint to it
i eat about 20-30 baby carrots every single day, love em
Yes it is true that eating an abundance of carrots (or carrot juice) could very well cause an orange tinge to the skin (have experienced it myself) BUT it is NOT the colouring in the carrots that create this anymore than eating lots of beets turning your skin red. What is actually causing the discolouration is that you liver is detoxing. Once the liver has detoxed, your skin will turn back to a normal colour.
Here is a website explaining the process: http://articles.herballegacy.com/carrot-part- ii-liver-cleanse/
I think I saw an episode of Grey's Anatomy with this. Hilarious.
Oh yes, it is true you can turn orange. My cousin's oldest child is a picky eater and when she went on baby food she would only eat sweet potatoes and carrots. Turned orange-y.
As far as the overdose - NO. Beta carotene is where the vitamin A comes from in your carrots, your body has to convert it. There is no danger of eating too much beta carotene, however there is a danger of eating too much supplemented Vitamin A (aka not in beta carotene form)
Vitamin C is water soluble so your kidneys might have to work a bit harder, but you will pee it out. If you've ever taken a vitamin supplement and noticed your pee was really really bright yellow afterwards, thats why.... it is your body eliminating all the extra vitamins it doesn't need.
That being said, you should maybe aim for a bit more variety in your diet anyways, that is a lot of carrots to eat in 5 days :)
