I think the biggest reason i don't eat nuts as often as I should or would like is that they are so expensive.
anyone have suggestions for cheap alternatives? I'm thinking Costco might be the way to go, but even then it hurts to spend $15.00 on a bag.
I don't pay that much for a bag of nuts. But, then, I don't know how big your $15 bag is or what kind of nuts.
I usually buy my nuts from Walmart, Dollar General, or on sale at the local grocery store.
A pound of almonds, for example, runs around $5 or so. Peanuts can often be found pretty cheap at Dollar General. Mixed Nuts with 50% peanuts are usually pretty cheap at Walmart, too.
The main thing is to look for coupons and in-store sales. Sometimes brands like Planters and Emerald have coupons. Also, you might Google on line for coupons from companies that sell nuts.
You can buy nuts in bulk and keep in airtight containers or bags in the freezer. I have stored nuts a long time this way when I bought large amounts of them.
I'm not sure where you live, but where I am (Ontario, Canada) we've got a couple stores called Bulk Barn and Bulk Barrel and they carry just about every kind of nut in every form you could ever imagine, in bulk!. I get all mine from there for making nut butters, I'd look for something similar in your area!
Sunflower and pumpkin seeds are cheaper but still full of nutrients and healthy fats.
Good point about the seeds. I have found that shelled pumpkin seeds compare very favorably with nuts. The shelled pumpkin seeds are much bigger than shlled sunflower seeds and have a wonderful "nutty" taste.
buying in bulk is usually the cheapest, and you can purchase as much as you want.
make sure you go to a specialized bulk food store though, one that circulates their products often.. that way you have less chance of buying rancid or stale food.
If you don't trust bulk foods, then buy small packages of nuts-- if you're like me, it's easier to spend $4 on a bag of nuts, than it is to spend $15 on a bag of nuts-- even though the $15 bag will be cheapest in the long run.
I don't like making "big" purchases , I'm a cheap student.
No access to Bulk Barn, but sounds like I should definitely check out seeds and probably just give in to Costco bulk purchasing. I have a membership as it is so might as well use it.
I did cost comparisons a few months ago and Costco was by far best priced for walnuts and almonds. You just have to be sure that you can use them up or freeze before they go off and that having a huge quantity around won't lead to excessive snacking which is why I don't buy peanuts or pistachios there!
