Do I drink too much hot chocolate?

I get the light stuff (45 calories for 3 tbsps), and drink an upward of 3 mugs daily (usually 2, but sometimes 3...). It's my guilty pleasure. I factor it into my calorie limit and everything, but is it downright bad for  me?

Why would this be bad as long as you are counting the calories?

I doubt it unless you are not supposed to have caffeine. The cocoa has some, but not as much as coffee. I don't know how you can drink the light stuff though. As someone who has used artificial sweeteners since toddler-hood (my mom put Sweetnlow in my cereal LOL) I just cant stand the taste of it in the hot chocolate. I know, I'm weird. As long as you like it, who cares though- enjoy!

The only concievable problem is anything nutritionally bad with the hot chocolate (ie trans fats, or too much sodium, or too much saturated fat, etc...)

 

Other than that, if you still achieve your calorie intake with the hot chocolate, it may be you're not "spending" (for lack of a better word!) the calories on more nutritious foods.

 

As a personal explanation as to why I say that, I cite myself. I used to eat 500 calories too many a day, BUT, I was getting all my nutrients amply. When I decided to cut back, I started suffering from small symptoms, that were later linked to deficiencies in certain minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids.

 

To sum up, be careful. But that's a rule of thumb with everything! Wink

don't mean to be rude.... but no your not drinking too much hot chocolate cause that would not be considered hot chocolate!!! what your drinking is a whole bunch of stuff that in no way would be considered a hot chocolate... a hot chocolate is made from well chocolate to begin with... good, pure chocolate and not water (though from research ive been doing, the first hot chocolate created by guatamalean nuns in the 1530 was soild cocoa and sugar melted in water) but pure milk and topped with cream and marshmallows.....

from my opinion, if you dont want to feel guilty from drinking a hot chocolate have the good stuff, pure chocolate with pure milk..... antioxidants and calcium.... its not a sin to have hot chocolate... whats a sin is to be fooling yourself with what you consider a hot chocolate!!!!

I think it'd only be bad if it contained a lot of sugar. Any more than a couple of teaspoons of sugar in each serving is probably too much sugar to be drinking in a day.

I love a good hot chocolate or two during long meetings at work, especially since it gets pretty cold in some parts of the building.  I've tried the low calorie/sugar free versions and, honestly, I think they are kinda icky and processed tasting.

If you are concerned about the nutritional makeup, I suggest making your own mix rather than using a commercial one.  I usually do 2-3 Tbsp of cocoa powder (a high quality one, since this is your flavor), a Tbsp or so of Truvia or other sugar substitute, and an optional splash of vanilla in water.  It comes out tasting like a dark chocolate version of hot chocolate.

If I would bother to bring in a microwave safe mug, I would do milk instead of water to get the milk chocolate flavor and the added nutrition from the milk.  Still, if you just are adding in cocoa powder + sugar substitute + water then your cup of hot chocolate should run you about 30 calories and be an ok drink nutrition wise.

(For example of nutrition, the cocoa powder I use has 1g fiber, 1g protein, and 8% iron per Tbsp for 15 calories, so my cup of hot chocolate gives me 2g fiber, 2g protein, and 16% daily amount of iron for my 30 calories.  That seems quite fine nutritionally for a treat to me.  Even better since I tend to not consume enough of those three nutrients.)

Other things you can do to switch it up include the vanilla (extra 12 calories per tsp added), using peppermint tea instead of water (for a peppermint hot chocolate), or adding fiber powder to it to increase your fiber intake.
