A bowl of steel cut oats are my go to breakfast source on most mornings. What are some good protein suggestions or side dishes I could have with this besides eggs? I don't want to eat too many eggs per week. TIA
My breakfast today was pretty high protein, and it was oatmeal. I had oatmeal(7g), with a banana cooked in, 2 tbsp of peanut butter (7g), and 2 tbsp of sliced almonds(2g). When it was almost done cooking, I just whipped quickly in two eg whites for only around 30 calories and 8 grams of protein, so my breakfast was 24 grams of protein, which is pretty good!
Also, yesterday, I just had half a cup of greek yogurt with a tiny bit of maple syrup on the side, for 80 calories and 10 grams of protein. One cup of greek yogurt is 20 grams/120 calories, so maybe that with honey/peanut butter, or maple syrup on the side?
I've also done wheat germ in oatmeal,4g protein/ 50 calories.
You could also cook your oatmeal in milk, for 8g protein.
Nuts are usually 8g of protein for 1/4 of a cup.
Hope you like my suggestions!
My favorite oatmeal recipe: (I know you said BESIDES eggs, but this only includes 1 egg and you can also substitute some scrambled egg beaters or egg whites if for some reason you have a problem with the yolk)
Cook 1/2 cup rolled oats (150 cals) in 1/2 cup 1% milk (50 cals) and 1/2 cup water. In a nonstick pan with a spritz of canola oil spray, cook an egg overeasy (70 cals) (OR scramble 1/2 cup egg beaters, or you can also cook these in the microwave in a bowl with a spritz of canola spray to get more of a "patty" shape...60 cals).
To the cooked oatmeal, stir in 2 oz. of 0% greek yogurt (30 cals), and 1 oz. of low fat shredded cheese (80 cals). I add a few drops of sriracha, salt, pepper, dried dill, and garlic powder for seasonings but you can add what you like. Get the oatmeal concoction into a bowl and top with the fried egg. The whole joy of it for me is breaking the yolk into the oatmeal, so that's why I recommend the whole egg, but it tastes good with egg beaters too.
I get weird looks when I tell people about this breakfast, but seriously the creaminess and cheesiness of the oats with that fried egg on top is just awesome in my book for breakfast. You can also get creative and add some cooked veggies to it like onion, mushrooms, zucchini, etc. I do this on the weekends when I have some more time.
The whole thing is 380 cals with the regular egg, with 34% fat, 28% protein, and 38% carbs, and 27 g protein. With the egg beaters it's 370 cals, with 23.4% fat, 35.5% protein, and 41.1% carbs, and 33 g protein.
I put a tablespoon or so of Nutella mixed in with my oatmeal.

I cook 1/3 cup oats with cinnamon and 1/2 ripe banana, top with Greek yogurt and 1 tbsp peanut butter.
About 350 cals and 20g proten :)
Thanks ladies for your responses.
Greek yogurt seems to be a popular choice and is one of my favorites - never tried it in my oatmeal aside from my protein powder.
hannahba - I do, thank you. In fact you know what they say about great minds... I love baking a banana and most recently added peanut butter in my oatmeal. I have tried 2% milk to switch it up from my the usual water preparation. Will try the egg white and greek yogurt.
phillygirl629 - That sounds so darn delicious. Thank you. Could you also just scramble a whole egg vs. the egg beaters? It may be a little bit more fatty but I have the protein?
adolphs - Sausage patty eh? Never heard of that? I do like sausage and will give that a go. Another thought is sweet italian sausage patty. I'm getting hungry for breakfast and its well into the afternoon.
Anyone else have suggestions, please share.
I know that this has been said...but I just want to emphasize the deliciousness..
1/2 cup oatmeal cooked..then add...
1 scoop chocolate protein powder mixed with..
1 container (6oz) plain greek yogurt
By the way, my favorite type of greek yogurt is fage. Brown cow and oikos are close seconds. =)
My mom went on a diet when I was young. Her breakfast which she made for all of us was --
Oatmeal with tuna fish and cottage cheese.
She hated it and could not wait to give it up. I actually really liked it. Everybody else I talk to says it sounds disgusting.
Anyway, that is the way I usually ate oatmeal. I was surprised when I heard people put sugar or milk and butter on it....
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
