too much green tea can cause constipation!

Quote  |  Reply

so Ive been drinking 3 glasses of green tea a day...prolly after each meal i have one...used to have more a day but recently i read around in some webpages that too much green tea can cause constipation! is this true??? if so has anyone had this happen to them before?

its frustrating cos ive gotten so addicted to the thing thats its just gonna be nearly impossible to just drop it. I have the decaff one...but i think its an ingredient the green tea has that makes u constipated....

ive been suffering from constipation practicaly all my life...but now its been nonstop for an entire month or so...and its driving me insane! it wasnt this bad ever before :/  I really wanna stop taking tool softeners...you're only allowed to use them for less than 7 days....i dont drink them each day though....i drink one prolly one day and then stay two days withotu taking it and its back to constipation mode...

any ideas of what else can be causing this? besdies the green tea...how much cups a day should a person have ?

Everyone's bodies react differently and you may have a sensitivity to tea or something else you're eating, but I've never heard of that before.

Usually green tea tends to keep things moving in the intestinal tract because of the caffeine (you said you were drinking decaf so you may want to switch).  If nothing else the extra liquid you're drinking should help.

I guess try eating some more fiber with the green tea or with other liquids and make sure you're eating enough.  If your diet is too strict you may not have enough food in your system to stay regular.

Im eating pretty regularly i mean, its well above 1,200 calories a day....with more than 20 grams of fat a day as well. I drink water all through out the day as well....so I cant think of anything else that may be causing this rather than the decaff green tea im having. Im gonna try switching to the normal one and see what happens :)

thanks for your reply!

I hope it works, maybe try adding some soluble and insoluble fiber and drink tons of water.  If that doesn't work, see a doctor.

yeah , i eat plenty of fiber...Im currently having whole wheat oatmeal for breakfast....or id have an organic whole wheat english  muffin, and then some fruit, and during the day practicaly all i eat is not refined....so....i drink water also ..a lot ..though i used to drink more before, and didnt have this problem..then again i didnt drink as much green tea...i used to drink another type of tea and only one cup of green tea....we'll see what happens...ill make some adjustments to see what works for me.

thank you again for carrying enough to keep replying :)

and yes if all else fails, i will see the doctor (in this case, my dad hehe)

Hello! In the morning I have permenantly switched to eating 1 cup of Kellogs All -Bran cereal with extra fiber with 3/4 cup of light soy milk. That is 26 grams of fiber to start off your day. Plus just make sure to drink plenty of water. You could start out with 1/2 cereal and then later on move up to 1 cup. Maybe that can balance you out a bit. Being constipated that much can end up obstructing your bowls and can lead to lots of other problems (as if constipation isn't enough!!)

Also, I add some brown sugar to give it some sweetness and I use the light Vanilla soy milk.

Good luck!

Yes, constipation is a very common side effect of Green tea in some people.  Minimize the amount to 1 cup a day.

OHH i had the same problem! I got addicted to green tea and drank about 5 glasses a day. I've always had a bit of a stomach problem (I'd either get mad diareha (srry can't spell it!) or constipation), but when I started drinking green tea, I became regular :) But then I guess I went wild with it and realized that I was becoming constipated, even though I was eating lots of vegetables and barely any grains, breads, or junk food. I assumed it was the tea so I cut down to 2-3 cups a day and now I'm back to my regular self :) Srry I don't know why. I just thought you'd like to know that other ppl get the same effect from too much of that goodness.

If this means you are eating 1,250 calories a day and are eating 21 grams of fat, this is definitely not enough.  First of all, 1,250 calories isn't even that much food, which means your body forms less fecal matter.  Secondly, the amount of fat you get in your diet should be around 30% of your calories, which for a 1,200 calorie diet is 40g of fat.

edit: omg i did not realize how old this post was -_-  You can ignore my comments then >_<

Did you really need to bump a thread from 2007 to say you agree?

This is going to sound thoroughly nuts, but I had recently had a bout with terrible constipation that lasted more than five weeks.  I have a very damaged gastro system due to med problems and several botched operations so I shy away from laxatives of any kind because they TERRIFY me.

But I had to do something and I remember when many people drank, believe it or not, Maxwell House coffee.  It's very harsh and is known to make people run to bathrooms because, as they now know, there is a chemical/natural ingredient..don't know what it is, actually that can actually "relax" intestines.  There are even rumors now that say that Nestle, the company that manufactures Maxwell House, is working on an "enema" that has similar elements as the coffee does.

At any rate, after five weeks of misery, the problem was solved after one pot of that coffee!!!  I keep some on hand now all the time, because in the end, though it tastes bad, it does work and is not harmful.

Hope that helps!  Good luck!
