Can you hardboil a softboiled egg?

Quote  |  Reply

Okay so I boiled some eggs today to make hardboiled eggs. I do this a lot & never have any issues. However, I just tried to peel one & realized it did NOT get to a hardboil. It's undercooked, so I guess it's soft-boil style.

I'm not sure why this happened, but can I salvage them? Could I like, put them back in boiling water & get hardboiled eggs out of them? Or is it too late?

Any help is definitely appreciated!

When this happens I usually just toss out the yolks, since usually the whites are cooked through.  I don't think you can re-cook them once they are cooled.

Yeah but the whites are so soft that they're just sticking to the shell. & yeah, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to recook the eggs that are still left =/

I'm sure it's not the best way to make hard boiled eggs, but if you're just going to throw them out why not give it a shot? I don't see any reason it wouldn't work or would be bad for you.

Are they sticking to the shell because they're not cooked enough, or just because they're 'sticky' eggs? Some eggs just don't peel nicely and it's got nothing to do with how long they were cooked. Cut one in half and look at the inside before you decide they're raw...

As far as I'm aware you can hardboil a softboiled egg. o__o You just put it in for a few minutes on top of how long it already cooked for. I hardboil eggs for 8 minutes counting once the water starts to boil and they come out nicely. :] And like kajikit said, sometimes the shell just sticks to the egg regardless. x__x

Yeah they were sticking because the white was still really soft & not cooked enough.
It was between trying to re-cook them or chucking them, so I boiled them again this morning. It seems to have worked, but I had to leave for work so I'll let you know when I get home =]

Thanks everyone!

But for goodness' sake don't put it in a microwave! Even if the shell is cracked, there seems to be steam between the yolk and the white when you take it out.

Silly me, I tried to finish off an egg in the microwave. When I took it out, the yolk exploded out and splattered impressively on the wall. I'm just happy it didn't explode in my face.

:-/

aw linden, that sounds pretty bad lol. They do make things so you can hardboil eggs in a microwave.

& the eggs actually did end up okay. Not completely normal, but better than throwing them out haha. Thanks all!
