What is Hummus?
What does it taste like?
Is it good for you?
can you get at chain grocery store?
Ive been hearing about it everywhere and i have no idea what it is.
Thanks
Hummus is a dip or spread traditionally made from chickpeas (or garbanzo beans), tahini, olive oil, lemon, garlic, and salt. It has a unique, creamy taste, and you can find it at most grocery stores. It is made from healthy ingredients and I personally find it delicious. You can top it on raw vegetables, crackers, toast, sandwiches, salads, etc. Give it a try!
I like the garlic hummus. It's around 35 cal for 2 tbsp, and I have some with baby carrots or wasa crackers 2 or 3 times a week bc it's so good!
I LOVE hummus! It's a Middle Eastern "dip", of sorts, made out of garbanzo beans, tahini (sesame seed paste), soy or olive oil, garlic, and salt. I chop up sun-dried tomatoes and put them in mine for extra flavor and antioxidant benefits. My favorite brand is Sabra, which Safeway sells...and also Costco. I have 2 tablespoons per day with 9-11 "Sensible Portions" pita "bites" (also available at Costco). (Total calories: under 200) That's one of my five daily meals...and it's a complex carbohydrate that's also high in protein. ![]()
Hummus tastes different. It is somewhat garlicky and creamy, with kind of a "plant" taste to it. It has a strong flavor. It is good for you, high in protein. It is also somewhat high in calories, but then again it is not meant to be eaten with a spoon. I put it on triscuits or sometimes with baby carrots. At first the taste overwhelmed me and I didn't want to put much on, but now I don't notice that as much and can eat more at a time. It's good to try. It's a better dip than ranch or something. I have found it at both Target and Wal-Mart--Sabra. You can find it in the vegetable/deli area--near the stuff like tofu and different things.

what's the protein count in your hummus? I LOVE it and have it a lot, but wouldn't class it as a protein source- I generally use about 1/4 cup at a time and it's around 5g protein (130 cas). i wouldn't consider that 'high protein' personally.

Are you sure it's not 35cals PER tbsp? Because hummus normally has 70cals per 2 tbsp.

Yeah, I misspoke. It's a protein source--that's what I should have said.
Hummus is delicious (to me) and something to keep on hand to balance out a snack or meal with some protein and healthy fats.
I prefer to make mine from scratch -- it is really easy if you have a food processer or blender. There are lots of recipes around, I like to add some ground cumin or smoked paprika from time to time.
Same here, I make mine from scratch too (LOL and also add cumin or smoked paprika, funny) I mostly leave out the olive oil, so it is even a bit less in calories, you don't really miss the oil tastewise, because the rest of the ingredients stand out very much anyway (garlic and such), it's a yummie snack for sure!
at first i thought it was quite bizzare but in no time my whole family got into it
it's actually gorgeous!
my favourite varieties are a moroccan style caramelized onion houmous, sun dried tomato, and lemon and herb. gorgeouuuuus!
i don't like it with bread-sticks like the rest of my family do, but it's gorgeous on thick, soft whole-meal bread with slices of red pepper, toasted pieces of pitta bread and when i was a bit more careless with my diet it was gorgeous with doritos
GODSEND!

Ummmmm....ACTUALLLY....When you combine garbanzo beans with sesame seeds, you DO create a complete protein (just as when you combine beans and rice). Check out this thread:

I never said it didn't make a complete protein, just pointing out that whether it's a complete protein or not, it's NOT high enough in protein for me to class as a protein source. I think of it more as a condiment/spread/dip because I aim for 25g+ protein per meal and using hummus as the sole source of protein....would be a heck of a lot of hummus!
