JUICER-calories??

you know a juicer that makes juice from fruits and veges? well we have one here and today i made a vege juice with like 5 carrots, a bunch of celery, 1 tomato nad an apple. soo if i ate all that wihtout juicing it, then that would be approximatley 300 cals. but since the juicer pretty much discards the skins, etc and just leaves the wateriness of the food, then it has to be less right?? please tell me yes.

just NEED to know how to calculate this magical juice that i conconted. thanks!

I'm not an expert, but I would guess that you are getting most (if not all) of the calories but none of the fiber (contained in the skins and roughage). It's still good for you, but you might feel more full if you ate the whole veggies, instead of juicing them.

You're right - it's hard to find information on juicing calories. I found this page on the Stanford Cancer Center website http://cancer.stanfordhospital.com/forPatient s/services/nutrition/recipes/juicingRecipes

It gives you the calorie counts for a couple of different homemade juices. It looks to me like you do get all the calories you would get if you were actually eating the fruits and veg instead of juicing them. I would calculate it that way to be safe.

Are you juicing for enjoyment or to lose weight? It might be more effective just to eat the veggies if it's the latter.

thanks so much! yeah juicing to loose weight, i figured that i have a better time dealing with food in the liquid form than actually eating food. so im doing juiced veges and protein shakes. the protein is a lot of dairy, but im a vegetarian so i guess that's my best source of protein.

yeah, i don't think that i will be jucing many fruits. maybe ill do like an apple or something along with some carrots and celery...thanks again!

I'm not trying to discourage you, but wouldn't it be better to simply eat all those vegetables and fruit?  You'd have the benefit of important fiber and it would be more satisfying too. 

To me, cleaning the juicer is a lot more trouble than just eating a raw carrot.

Sorry...but I don't usually speak up.  Juicing is wonderful.  It isn't intended to be a substitute for proper eating.  The advantage to juicing has nothing to do with calories.  When you juice, the nutrients in the food are extracted to a liquid form.  Our bodies are able to absorb those nutrients pretty much immediately.  If you are getting fiber from other sources, then juicing is an add on that I love.  Even my husband who swore he'd never juice now ask for a couple of my 'concoctions' on his work days that he has to go straight to university.  Specifically, apple, carrotts, celery and spinich juiced gives him energy for that extra 3 hrs of focus time and does give him a let down.

Another advantage is that you belly gets the signal that it has food much faster than solid food.  I will drink what I tease is a green drink while I'm prepping dinner.  I now eat 1/2 as much. 

How effective is it?  Both husband and I have lost collectively 170+ pounds.  It wasn't just JUICING---we eat right and exercise.  HOWEVER, both of us will tell you that the juicing has made major changes in the ease with which we are both able to handle our stress, eating habits and energy.

For me, I am at university for the frist time at 53 and my teachers these past 2 semesters noticed a difference.

Juice for health---not calories and the rest falls in place.

I agree with you! Although, I just started juicing and have not had the benefits you've seen yet, I do feel full after drinking my homemade juice. I am not motivated to eat celery, carrots and fruits unless they are prepared with lots of work! I just bought the Jack LaLanne's pro juicer and it includes lots of pulp from fruits and veggies. There are recipes to use the left over pulp, which isn't much! So muffins, etc are loaded with fiber and flavor. I enjoy my juicer and my kids are loving it also. What parent can easily get a kid to eat a few pieces of fruit and veggies in one sitting?! Not many! I think the juicer is a great idea! I don't think you get the whole calorie count in the glass of juice that you would by eatting the whole fruit or veggie, but I'm sure there are calories, although light and fiber too!

I am a vegan juicer.  There are two advantages that I have noticed.  Many non-meat eaters (myself included) go to heavy on the carbs.  I got to the point that I either felt hungry or heavy, and my body learned that the heavy feeling in the stomach after a carb heavy meal was the full feeling.  By juicing I am in the process of retraining my body to feel full if I am not hungry.  Just a few days ago I had one of those carb heavy meals and did not like that old full feeling I use to look for.  It is better now just not to be hungry.  Juicing gave me a chance to get nutrients and retrain my body at the same time...

Next, I want to address the fiber argument.  Most meat and dairy eaters need a fiber heavy diet because meat and dairy are normal constipators.  Our bodies are not made to digest meat (the stomach acids cannot break it down) so it is disgusted in the intestines.  Dairy also slows the digestive system.  Fiber pushes these things along.  The reason fiber reduces cancer is because without it, meat will start to rot while it is in the body and the toxins (over time) are harmful to the body.  This is also why Vegans have the lowest level of colon cancer out of all groups.  Long explanation short, if you are not putting meat (and even better meat and dairy) in your body, there is very little benefit to high fiber diets.  Personally, I cannot eat a lot of fiber or my body goes into shock and ... well ... I just can't do that.

So for me, it is about 'not' getting too much fiber (two apples a day is enough for me) and trying to learn to live on a low calorie low carb diet.  Since the feeling of hunger is no more than the stomach shrinking, I try to keep it small to begin with, and a juice is not going to expand the stomach like eating 4 carrots, celery, broccoli, an apple, parsley, etc.  I also drink half a protein shake and will have a salad in the evening with 1.5 oz of TVP on it.  This gives us more than enough protein a day.  I dropped 6 pounds last week and did not get that ‘I am starving’ feeling once.  I also notice that my energy level has significantly increased.

Sheryl, How do you use the spinach?  Do you buy frozen or fresh?

 

I agree with the pro-juicers. I got one a year ago and couldn't be without it, i've also converted lots of my friends.

my faves are carrot/apple/fresh ginger or beetroot/apple (very good for the liver and detoxing and full of iron).

I think you do get pretty much all the calories as you would otherwise but so many nutrients in one glass!

sometimes fresh juice can be quite intense and if it's fruity quite sweet. I often half and half it with sparkly water, it's really refreshing and less calories that way.

cleaning it is a chore though :(

I have no problem with the decision not to eat meat or dairy, but sorry - this is BS. Humans are omnivores, and we are indeed perfectly capable of digesting meat. We have meat-digesting enzymes, and if meat - or anything else - builds up in our intestines, we suffer a painful condition known as impacted bowels. It's not the sort of thing you could suffer without noticing, and it isn't the normal state of affairs for people who consume meat.

And you've also bumped and even older topic than your last post. This one is from 2007 and the last response was 18 months ago.

I found these posts by doing a google search using the words "juicing calories" last week.  There was not an answer in the post, so I have been looking for a week now for the answer.  When I found it, I posted it here, because, if anyone else does a google they can find it.

I just picked up a juicer this past weekend and very much appreciate Diane's post; zombie thread or not, the information here is still useful and relevant.

 

When juicing, everybody is pretty much in agreement that you lose on the fiber.  But I think there's got to be some other nutrients that you're losing out on - even if it's just partial.  No idea, though.  Just a sinking suspicion.

I use a blender to puree the fruits/veggies so I can get everything in.

^I agree! I tried to do the juicing thing, and the money I spent on produce for one or two glasses of juice was insane. Cleaning was also the biggest pain in the world. I just stick to eating them now.

I've been juicing for less than a week and I've done several Google searches trying to find various answers to questions I have. Thank you for posting the information you did - I found it immediately while doing a Google search for 'juicing calories'.

No one should ever be discouraged from asking or answering questions:)

 

I also agree! I juice all the time and I don't even know how I was living my life without it.

I gave my juicer to my sister.  It was a huge mess to create juice.  Now I use a blender to 'drink' my veggies.  I prefer my veggies raw, not cooked so drinking them is a good option for me.  Plus my blender has a 'clean' option so the cleanup takes less time than the juicer.   When calculating the calories for said smoothie I create a 'meal' to log.  Then I can adjust the 'meal' later if I left something out.
