How long do you soak lentils before cooking?

The title says it all... I have whole dried green lentils. How long should I soak? The internet seems to give mixed answers... Thanks!

I never soak lentils, they cook so fast without soaking.

I've never heard of soaking lentils, that's one of the advantages of lentils over beans

You do not have to soak lentils. As appletwo said, that is one of the advantages!

I just rinse them well and cook them.

I prefer red lentils to green and never soak those.  Even with green lentils, I still don't think you need to soak them.  (The green ones keep their shape better than red - red go all lovely and mushy which is ideal for making lentil soup.)

I only soak lentils for my lentil patties, but that's because i'm cooking them in the frying pan.

If you soak them overnight and the rerinse, it will significantly reduce the amount of gases you create when digesting them...takes out the stuff that causes gas.

You don't have to soak lentils.  Part of their beauty is that they cook in half an hour flat; no soaking.

Hunh.  They don't give me gas, either.

Actually this isn't true of either lentils or beans...you do soak them, but you don't need to discard the water.

I rinse them but don't soak them but what do I know.

I'd soak them in the garbage can for a few days, and have something healthier.

So, because lentils don't fit in with your personal dietary requirements (paleo), they are deemed unhealthy?

Silliness.

Kool-Aid isn't very healthy, either, but you seem to be drinking plenty of the paleo flavor.
