Oatmeal and high blood pressure

Quote  |  Reply

Even though I am physically fit and I have always eaten healthy, high blood pressure runs in my family. So based on bad genetics, I have had high blood pressure since I was 25 (I turn 30 in a few weeks). I have been on medication for it, but in the last few months I have been getting high readings despite being on the medication. A week ago, my blood pressure was 145/95.

I came across a study that said that oatmeal was not only good for lowering cholesterol, but high blood pressure as well. I had always eaten oatmeal every day in the past. However, I only would have 1/2 a cup. So for the last week, I increased my oatmeal intake to 2 cups a day. I have followed this religiously for the last 7 days. Today I took my blood pressure and it was 133/70!! Talk about a huge drop. Granted, my systolic (top number) still has some room for improvement, but my diastolic (bottom number) has never been that low before.

I am psyched to say the least. Two cups a day keeps the doctor away apparently..LOL

That is so awesome vyper, what a wonderful find for you! Do you think there is any prospect of being able to get off the medication?

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement.

In regards to getting off the medication, I hope so.

If you think about it, I have basically been without the medication for a few months now because even though I still take the medication every day I have been getting high readings. So it has stopped working.

That means I was able to get this huge drop by natural means. I have an appointment to see my doctor this Monday, so I am going to see what she says when I share the news with her. Maybe she will let me go without blood pressure medication for awhile to see if the increased oatmeal intake will continue to help.

Congratulations vyper! I know about oatmeal working for high cholesterol but I never heard about it working for high blood pressure.  Good find.

Good luck with your doctor's appointment on monday.

Thanks. I am hoping it goes well. I usually check in with my doctor every three months or so.

Yeah I never had any clue about oatmeal and blood pressure benefits either. It has always just been labeled as a cholesterol reducing food.

Blood pressure medications can also raise cholesterol. So by eating your oatmeal you're reducing both. :)

I have high BP, mostly related to weight (I'm overweight). I was fine until I started my first hormonal birth control and it's been high ever since. It's controlled (120/80) on medication (100mg labetalol x2 a day). I'm also on it for chronic headaches and it helps with anxiety as it is a beta-blocker. Even if I get my BP under control naturally I have to stay on it... it's a total bummer. :(

I'm really glad you found a natural way to lower your blood pressure. Keep up the good work and continue monitoring your blood pressure, I'm sure with a good diet the systolic will continue to drop to a normal number.

I should probably try eating 2 cups of oatmeal a day... if not for blood pressure but for weight loss. Stuff is so filling and I have a crazy appetite. :)
