Ramen Noodles? Bad or Good for dieters?

I recently started my diet, and am struggling to find foods that I like, that are filling, and that are low cal, low everything bad haha.

Well today I looked at the back of this brocoli cheese soup (canned) and it was like 22 fat g. 400 calories. SO i opted for the oriental ramen noodles instead. I added some carrots and celery for some filling grams, but I realize that ramen noodles are all carbs.

I know once wont hurt me, but are ramen noodles a good idea for lunch to mix things up every now and then (with added veggies)? or should I cut them out pretty much completely?

Any advice helps. Thanks.

ramen noodles are BAD.  super processed, all carbs, and if you use the packets, SODIUM overkill.  i imagine eating some of the noodles every now and then with some other source of protein and fat wouldn't derail your diet, but definitely don't use the flavoring.
If you like it, eat it.  I eat Ramen and survived off it for two months 'cause it was all I could afford.  To date I've lost 72 pounds.

Ramen is filling, which is what I focus on it.  You can do a lot of things with it, too.  Adding vegetables, using it in stir fries, seasoning it different ways..  I like adding fish sauce, soy sauce, and pepper to mine.  Alex likes adding toasted chili peppers, various vegetables, and an egg.

I wouldn't cut it out.  But that's just me personally.  And I'm half-focused on this response 'cause I'm talking to Alex on the phone. :D
well, if you are eating the whole pack of ramen (which is what i used to do when ever i ate them) then you are getting 340 calories and 14 grams of fat. not a big difference from the broccoli soup. the other thing about ramen is that it contains an INSANE amount of sodium.

do you need to cut them out completely? i'd say no, but i'd definitely make them a one in a while thing, they have enough sodium to bloat up an elephant!
bad for everyone, not just dieters.  check the sodium content (and if you're adding things like fish sauce and soy sauce, double it).

there's virtually no nutritional value - just empty calories. 
I actually eat the Ramen noodles but I take the noodles and split them by half - 190 calories.  Adding veggies are good.  There is a lot of sodium in the packet, so if you are going to have it I suggest you drink tons of water after to flush out the sodium.  You could also substitute the flavoring for regular low-sodium chicken broth.

Were you eating them while dieting? I love how cheap they are! (And I definitly know how it feels to be distracted haha)

 

To everyone else: The soup had just as much sodium with more fat and calories, so I think I made the better choice...but maybe I should just get healthier soups!

My boyfriend went on this Ramen noodle kick, where he craved the constantly! It was a bit annoying, but he lost 6 pounds in like 2 weeks. Crazy...so I dunno. I guess I will eat them sparingly.

Oh good idea. Yeah I actually get incredibly full from the whole thing! It makes more sense to split it in half! And the chicken broth thing is a great idea. Although the flavoring is amazing, so I would probably just get progressive soup instead if I was to do that. eh I dunno. I guess there is no way to make them GOOD for you.

Sometimes i just use chicken broth and frozen veggies, sometimes if i have some already-made chicken, I add that in too.  It's filling and you get your liquids, protein and veggies all in one shot!

Yes, I was.  And I'm still eating them now, and still losing weight.  I eat half of the packet and give the other half to the boy.  We eat Ramen maybe 5 times out of the week.

The sodium doesn't bother me 'cause I don't use the flavour packet.  He buys chicken.  I'm sick of chicken.  So I flavour it with other things.  When I do use the flavour packet it's 'cause I want the chicken flavour so I don't add other sauces to it, just pepper.  With plenty of veggies, it's filling, and if you drink enough water, the sodium won't bother you a bit.

Empty calories they may be, but they're delicious.  The added vegetables can make them well worth it.

P.S.  Another great thing to flavour it, use red wine vinegar.  So yummy.

I was always told that they are extremely bad for you. They are 100% carbs made with white processed flour and a chinese type of gluten/yeast (it's more startchy than the type they use in western foods). After that they are DEEP FRIED to preserve them (ever wonder why they are so crunchy/yummy raw?). When u cook them u add an aweful amount of sodium into the mix.

All Chinese noodles which are "instant" or "quick" are deep fried (pre-cooked). If you have a craving for Chinese noodles the BEST CHOICE (none are great) is to hit up a Chinese restaurant that has WONTON NOODLES made fresh daily. The noodles aren't deep fried (in that case), they're actually brown in color (so I doubt that they are made from white flour) and the soup base for the wonton soup tastes much less salty than the packeted ones. They'll also usually put some Chinese broccoli in it for you too ("Gai lan"). Usually very cheap - like $5-7 for a big bowl. You might not want to eat the actual Wontons tho, just ask for the wonton-noodles and soup with veggies, probably been less expensive that way too!

 I forgot to mention - it's delicious too!

Just thought I'd share because I was surprised when I discovered this, but the second ingredient listed for the soup base is MSG (monosodium glutamate). (BTW, this may have been obvious to many people, but I was very ignorant of a lot of things before I made a commitment to a health-conscious lifestyle.)
You can get a healthier version .  Look on the etnic isle of your store and they have versions that are not deep fried.  One brand name is Wel-Pac Chow mein stir-fry noodles Chuka Soba.  There is 3 2 ounce servings in a pack with 200 calories for each serving and only 5 of those are from fat.  Another brand is Hokan Chinese Noodles (Mein).  There is 4 servings in that pack at 200 calories per serving and they have 0 calories from fat.  HTH
They are GOOD! as long as you eat in the morning have a light lunch and good dinner you'll be fine. I have been eating Top Ramon for Breakfast everyday for the past 20 days and I've already lost 16lbs :-) lunch I have a Lien Cusine no more then 300 cals and a dinner no more than 600-800 cals :-)

Ramen noodles are so good though!

When I was a little bit younger, iver summer, all I did was play computer games, and eat ramen. That's absolutly all I did. I lost twenty lbs.

Noodles are not too bad, just the amount that you eat.  If you live some where there is an Asian store near by, you should make a visit.  There are so many variety of noodles and flavors out there.  Yes, some have higher calories and fat count than others.  I try to aim for a packet that is around 220 or less with 6 grams of fat or less.  You can always break the noodle in half and use half of seasoning packet to cut down on sodium.  I make mine a meal by adding 2 to 3 oz. of shrimp, chicken, or beef.  Chopped up some green onion, cilantro, handful of bean sprouts, broccoli, thinly sliced celery or anthing you like.  I like mine on a spicy side so I chopped up some jalepeno and a squeeze of lime with it.  Yummy...

I actually saw in the store that Ramen has come out with a "Smart Choice" variety of Ramen Noodles. They come in beef, chicken, and shrimp flavors and have I think 80% less fat and 25% less sodium than regular Ramen. Of course, they're more expensive too; $0.50 a pack as opposed to $0.20 for the regular. I bought some but haven't tried them yet.

Oh I saw that low fat ramen the other day XD  I almost picked it up on a lark but I figured I could eat actual pasta still for the same calories since I don't use the flavor packet
I actually saw the other day that they are making a lower sodium version of regular ramen noodles. Same cal count though.

Hey I use like 1/8 of a teaspoon of the season and eat the noodles drained.   I really dont like the season just fast noodles.  I'm thinking when I get my job at the pea pod inn resturant the owner will give me tips on good chinese food.  Her low mein is insain but sooo unhealthy.  Anyway I would just not use the packet of salt and just eat the noodles.
