Of course it has a great deal of Omega 3's (but you can get that in a lot of other foods too anyways).

In your opinion, is it worth all those calories?

Do you usually eat it? Or do you avoid and stick to lower calorie foods?

I love salmon.  Less mercury than tuna.  But I love tuna too.  Wild salmon is definitely the way to go, I won't touch the farmed stuff ... talk about fatty!

I too love salmon, I prefer raw over cooked though. I can't seem to find the  analysis for raw salmon, do u think its like the cooked? I can't see it as cooking changes the nutrients in food, usually.  I agree with pp in that farmed is very fatty and wild is the only way to go. I think the good in salmon outweighs the bad.

raw is way better.  I haven't seen any nutritional breakdown but I have to think that cooking would destroy some of the omega-3 fatty acids. 

its definitely better for you than Tuna, which usually contains poisonous mercury.

 

We eat salmon sometimes, but for fish we mostly eat Tilapia. 

i love salmon (sockeye), raw or cooked.  cooking shouldn't damage the fats except those on the outside, that come in direct contact with the heat, and even then only if you cook it on very high heat. 

definitely worth the calories - it's so good for you.  and if you stick to a reasonable portion, it's not even that high.  most people eat huge portions, especially when it comes to protein.
I had smoked salmon as a snack yesturday. I dont find it to be high calorie. One cup is 159 and i had about half a cup. For me any snack around or less then 100 is good for me. The 3 meals a day  I have been eating only total 800 - 850. that leaves me 650 to stay in target range.
I eat salmon roughly 5x a week in LARGE portions and when I say large I mean it! I eat about 10-12 ounces in a serving for sure & it does not seem to affect my weight at all - the good fats in the fish definitely do wonders on the body so I wouldn't worry about eating salmon for calorie reasons! You should eat it to get healthier!! 
I obviously don't eat salmon, since I don't eat animal products; and even if I did, I can't stand the smell and flavor.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't try it though! Salmon is very high in omega-3's and EFA's and is probobly one of the "healthiest" fish out there. But since it is high in fats and calories, and also contains animal proteins, cholestorol, and mercury - it should be consumed in moderation, in considerable portion sizes (3-4 oz. cooked salmon).

 10-12 ounces is too big a serving for any protein.

So you're vegan now, zebulancherry? Weren't you at one point pro-meat and all about the food chain and eating animals being natural?.. I guess you got converted.

Guilty. Sorry about all that before; I have to admit, I really lost my marbles there for a while. Anyway, yep - I'm vegetarian now, and am vegan most days (trying to go full time).

I love salmon. I rarely eat cooked salmon, I just prefer the taste of raw salmon. Salmon is one of my favourite things to get at sushi places. I don't eat it more than once a week, but it is very good for you and it is yummy so it is worth the calories in my opinion.

Amarynth, if you are looking up the nutritional information for raw salmon, you can look up salmon and sushi, it will tell you the information for raw salmon that way.

I LOVE salmon and would eat it more often if I was home to cook it most nights of the week.  I love to go to Costco and get those large planks of skinless boneless salmon and cut it into good sized portions, but truthfully unless I have company over to help me eat it, it would go to waste.  I often order salmon when out eating.  Other fish I really like are Sea Bass and Swordfish and Halibut.  I am fully aware of the additional fats in salmon, but to gia's point and others, it is a hugely healthy fish and has the right kinds of fats.  So to your health!

Seems like everyone love salmon here! I just thought 3oz is almost 200 cals (3oz isn't really a realistic serving for one meal is it?)
...and I could easily eat 8oz in a meal (that's around how much they serve in restaurants I think!) so that's around 700+ cals alone on protein.... on top of carbs, veggies, etc.

What about roasted eel? I also really like that... but again, high cals, one of the fattier fish!

i friggin' LOVE salmon, but especially eel. those are my two favorite sea animals, apparently. yes, salmon is calorie-dense, but it's also flavor-rich, so a smaller portion should do you well. just don't eat the entire portion served if you're out. i don't know how many cals are in eel, but very rarely do people eat eel whole, in my experience. i did have a whole eel at a thai (?) restauarant once. it was yum, but so big i came nowhere close to finishing it. but most times, don't us americans usually encounter eel in sushi? if so, you don't get a lot of it, so i don't think the calories should be an issue.

either way, a big piece of salmon or eel is loads better for you than a big piece of fried anything.

and yes, salmon is a fattier fish, but it contains a fat (omega-3 fatty acids) that is beneficial, and that we don't eat enough of in our regular diets.
