vegetable hatred (don't tell my mom)

Quote  |  Reply
Does anyone else hate veggies as much as I do?? Don't get me wrong, I eat them but I don't like to. I pack some veggies in my lunch box but they usually end up staying in there unless I get REALLY hungry. Baby carrots are about the only vegetable that I eat on a regular basis. I wasn't always like this but it seems in the last few years its gotten worse.

There are some veggies that I freaking LOVE (pumpkin, corn, peas, sweet potato...) and some I'll barely tolerate (broccoli, carrots.)

If broccoli wasn't so freaking nutritious I wouldn't be eating it several times a week. I just make sure I have something on my plate that I DO like, and ever since childhood I've eaten in reverse order of what I like most (for example, if I was eating steak, potatoes, carrots and broccoli, I'd eat it in reverse order to that because I love my meat, and it serves as a reward for getting through the broccoli.)

Oddly enough, I don't have any objections to the one everyone hates: brussel sprouts.

I love Brussels sprouts!  But then, I also love broccoli.

How do you usually eat your vegetables?  Try preparing them in different ways to see if you like them better.  I hate raw bell peppers and raw summer squash but I love them cooked.  Maybe you just need to find new ways to eat them.

If it becomes absolutely necessary to convince you enjoy eating your vegetables, you could eat things such as the following;

  • potato french fries
  • pumpkin pie
  • pizza with tomato-based sauce
  • pork tenderloin sandwich with lettuce on it
  • cheese burger with onion slice on it
  • corn beef and cabbage
  • beef/chicken/shrimp stir fry with sugar snap peas
  • ham and sausage omelet with diced bell pepper

However, I readily admit there are much healthier ways for you to get your daily veggie requirements.

Woah. Don't feel bad veggies, I love you! lol

Have you tried different cooking methods? I'm a big fan of roasted veggies tossed with parmesan cheese. yummmmmm....

try mixing them into your favorite foods.

like mac and cheese with peas :) oooohhhh....that's fun to say lol

or pizza topped with cauliflower bits and fresh tomato slices

or adding some spinach into a lasagna or other pasta dish

Plain vegetables are not my favorite either, and the only one I really like and eat regualry is green beans (like you and your carrots).

I dont feel guilty about eating ranch dressing bc at least I got some vegetables to be tasty.

I like some of the green giant boxed veggies w/ seasonings.

Even if you dont like the veggies it sounds like you are trying to eat them anyway so good job!

Last night I was craving something light and refreshing so I blended a cup of ice water with a couple stalks of celery for a few minutes... and boy was it ever good!

Sometimes I blend spinach into shakes or into my pumpkin pancake batter (st patricks day style!) to up my veggie content

I eat PLENTY of vegetables as it is though, the more I eat, the more I crave. Last night my mid-night snack consisted of 1/2 apple blended with spinach, celery, Vega oil and some water; and a large mix green salad with tomatos and a squeeze of orange. Sometimes veggies just hit the spot.

I really feel people that hate vegetables just haven't had opportunities to eat them in different preparations.  I love broccoli...but not raw or plain steamed/boil...yuck.

try a stir fry with lots of veggies--i know i tend to eat everything if its in a stir fry.  toss lots of veggies in a pan with a little oil/soy sauce/oriental sauce, with a choice of meat if you want.  I love using onions, bell peppers, broccoli, and mushrooms here.

roasted and grilled veggies are yummy too!
try googling kale chips recipe too.

Just over a year ago, I hated vegetables too. But now, I can't get enough of them! Last night at dinner I ended up eating all of the broccolli(but it wasn't THAT much, and my parents almost never eat their veggies anyway). The day before that I had an extreme craving for spinach, and right now I'm in the mood for some carrots XD

Once you start eating more vegetables and natural, wholesome foods, you'll finally begin to enjoy them. But, some veggies do taste better than others, and it also depends on how you have them. For example, raw broccoli tastes like crap, but when cooked, it's delicious! Try a wide variety of veggies, and cook them in many ways. Add them to omelets, stir-fries, stews(that's the first way my mom got me to eat them), soups, casseroles, grill them, sautee them, roast them, steam them! Hell, on occasion, frying them isn't that bad. Just eat 'em! :P

Thanks for the tips and recipes! I should have clarified that I do eat veggies when they are cooked into things just not plain veggies. I like sweet potates but I consider potatoes more of a starch/carb than a veggie. I'm gonna try to eat my vegetables first next week and see if that works. I'm also gonna stock up on v8 light cuz that stuff is yummy and at least I'll be getting some vegetables/nutrients that way.

I hate broccoli. But put it in a stir-fry with some soy-sauce, garlic and honey and I'm all over that!

Baked or pan fried veggies in light Italian dressing is my favorite. Or roasted with a little olive oil and garlic and wine seasoning from the melting pot. Makes any veggie awesome
