WTF is wrong with my turkey....

Quote  |  Reply

Ok I bought some deli turkey slices on my lunch break so no extensive label reading.  The brand is called "Healthy Ones", but then I got back to work and was reading the ingredients:  440mg of sodium, added carmel color, also nitrates and phosphates. What gives?  I just want some turkey.  Anyone have any better turkey or deli meat suggestions?

Hmm sorry to state the obvious, but if you buy a raw turkey breast and roast it yourself, you will have full control over the sodium and additives!

Deli meat is, by nature, laden with the stuff. In small infrequent quantities, I see no problem with it, but that's just because I refuse to give up delicious ham. I have not yet found a ham that doesn't have at least 500mg of sodium per 100g serving, and that's on the lower side, most are more like 1000mg.

Well I knew nitrates were in ham or pork products, but did not realize that turkey that those in it it as well.  I was wondering if a brand like Boars Head may have additive free meats.  But I guess the best bet is to just roast it yourself.

I like Applegate Farms, Boar's Head & Jennie-O

Yeah the majority of deli meats have nitrates & other additives.  I've found this awesome chicken breast at my local grocery store with zero additives.  Make sure you ask the deli clerk to look at the ingredients before you buy anything.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
