Ok, so I wasn't a fan of the steel cut oats that everyone keeps recommending.
So last week I bought Bob's Red Mill 5 Grain Rolled hot cereal. Made with whole rolled wheat, rye oats, flaxseed and barley. It's only 120 cal for 1/3 cup dry (makes over a cup after cooking), has 5g fiber.
It's REALLY yummy - I think it has more taste and definately more texture than oatmeal.
Yesterday I made it with 2 tsp of peanut butter and a drizzle of honey, which was pretty good. Today I used 2 tsp brown sugar and a dash of cinnamon, which was even better. I can't wait to keep trying different flavor combo's (suggestions welcome!)
It was only 2.39 at Whole Foods, and it should make 12 servings, so it's a bargain too!

How long do you have to cook it for? I only use rolled oats (never instant), and i find that just pouring boiling water over them still works, even though they're not instant. Could you pour hot water over this as well, for the same result? Or is it more like steel cut oats (which you have to cook for 25 mins, and plain boiling water wouldn't soften them enough)?
They do have to be cooked, simmered for 10-15 minutes max on the stove, depending on the consistency you like. I preferred 10 minutes, then I let sit for another 5 to cool and absorb the remaining water. That gets it plenty soft, but still have a chewy consistency. It says you can microwave, but I haven't tried yet.
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
