Welcome to the **August** Challenge!

If you’ve participated before, welcome back for another month! To all those who have not done this challenge (or any other) welcome aboard newbies!

The challenge is pretty easy & does NOT require a long term commitment. You pick a goal weight, and post your progress each week. You are NOT in competition with the other challengers—in fact, you are encouraged to cheer each other on. This is about having a reason to stay motivated throughout the month’s weight loss journey and having a place to post your progress to help you stay on track--some "extra" accountability for your actions because you know you aren't the only one who will "see" the results.

We'll have 4 weekly weigh-ins in August plus the start date. I will not put weight data on the spread sheet until you report your weight info for the first weigh in. Our weekly weigh-in dates are August 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2009 for final weigh in.

Weigh-in days are on a Friday...following Navane's organization. If you want to change the day, please let me know. If you weigh a different day for some specific reason, do so, but please report it on Friday for statistical purposes of this thread. Thanks.

I will normally post results by Monday—I will NOT email you to remind you to post.

So! Sign up--fill out the form below and post it EVERY Friday with your new weights.

That's a great idea pixie (oops...anti-pixie Smile).  I'll have to see about changing my numbers in the challenge to reflect the trend and not the weight.  I'm not sure exactly how to determine what my goal should be, though, with the trend.  It's difficult to know how much it will drop in a month.  I've been looking at weight for so long that I understand what it's going to do (8 - 10 pounds in one month is a good goal), but the trend is more tricky.  I think that it will drop much more slowly, but I'm not sure by how much.

Anyway, as I say; good idea.

Are you weighing every day?  If so, the trend will be there whether you've really been paying attention to it or not, and you can look back over your previous numbers and maybe compare weekly/monthly loss to the scale weight loss you've been recording.  It'll probably be a little higher, but a similar loss per month.  If you're weighing weekly, though, it won't be accurate.

Persionally, the trend is what saves my sanity, ESPECIALLY during plateaus.  It's very forgiving.  If I'm at, say, a solid 207 for an entire week, then go up a pound on Friday after knowing my cal intake has been a steady 1500, it would make me crazy!!  But if my trend is still going down despite a rise in weight, I can say, nope, I'm still losing! Good job me!  Instead of beating myself up.

I know I'm at a real plateau when my trend weight goes up a little.  But usually it doesn't go up by more than .5 even on a plateau, so it's still less stressful than seeing my scale weight go up 5 lbs.  And anyway, this time around I've decided that hitting a plateau will be a reward time - since I know my weight's going to be stable for a bit, I get to buy a new pair of comfy jeans without worrying I'll shrink out of them and waste money.  And that keeps me from fearing that .1-.5 lb. rise. :)

Ah, I love the start of a diet, when the weight just *falls* off. All I've done to get started is start logging my food, which always helps to dramatically cut down on my between-meal snacks when I'm stressing out at my desk - instead of peanuts, I've been eating grapes.

Something we've been doing more of lately - my fiance and I both love to eat out, but we always find that the portion sizes are ridiculous. Instead of doing the "box up half immediately" thing, we've begun just splitting a large salad and an entree. Very few restaurants have any problem with this, most don't even bat an eye and will sometimes even bring it to the table already split onto two smaller plates. We then tip a bit heavier (hey, we just saved about 40%, and the economy is tough - our friends who live on tips have told us that a lot of folks have stopped tipping at all!).

mischiefdm - I am not using a scale that is accurate to one-hundredth of a pound. Rather I am using the trend weight from the weight log here, since that's more accurate and balances out daily weight fluctuations. If I was using my scale weight, I would have gone from 210 lb. on Aug. 1 to 207.5 lb. today. :)

antipixie: It is great that you find the trend weight useful but it is just that, a trend and not an accurate weight.  The trend is a moving average calculated from the last 30 recorded weights and estimates what you might weigh in the future.

Please record your actual weight for the challenge.  Thanks.

I've been staying in the 254's pretty much all month (except the day we started the challange and for some reason I was 255.6).  So really I've lost more like .5 lb instead of 1.6 lbs.  It's still going in the right direction though.

I worked so hard this week. Increased my intensity levels during workouts. Worked out 6 days, reduced calorie intake, packed veggie snacks for work...and still I gained. Definitely frustrated with my body right now.

If you're working out hard, you may have gain muscel mass which would make the scale go up.  I know it's frustraiting, but don't let it get you down!

(also, if you working out a lot, make sure you're getting enough cals so your metabolism doesn't slow down).

I am fairly new to CC and this is my first challenge, but after looking at the roster I do have concerns for a couple of people.  I am a mother of 2 children.  A daughter who is 6 and a son who is 3.  When I see young girls who want to be stick thin I worry about how that affects my daughter and her impression of how she should look.  She has always been naturally underweight of an average 6 year old, but healthy.  Since I am "overweight"  BMI wise I have changed my eating and become more active.  She worries she will get fat one day.  I try to explain Mommy's not healthy and I am working on it. (She now loves fresh spinach!!) For everyone out there, please remember the goal is to be healthy and happy.  Not to get in a size 00 pant just because some actress or a shorter friend can.  Also remember that toned 120 lb person can look significantly smaller than a 120 lb person who is not toned.  Like it or not ALL OF US are  role models for EVERY CHILD who ever sees us, in our homes, in a store, or just walking down the street.   Thanks for listening to my 2 cents.  And congrats to all for working towards healthier lifestyle!

I'm a newbie.  I am glad this site exists, great place for a food journal.  This is my first challenge, I am looking forward for some change.  My husband and I entered a boot camp on 08/04/09, twice a week until 08/27/2009.  I am sore like heck.  I think it will get better with time.

That's very observant and thoughtful of you and understandable why you are concerned for your daughter.  Many people want to get to a specific weight for various reasons and I've checked the very low weights on this site to make sure that goals are within reason of which some are on the verge but acceptable.

Many people think that I do not need to lose anymore weight but I've got 5#s on my thighs that apparently are not going to come off without losing more total.  Then maybe I can tone back up; who knows.Undecided
