You will need to stay away from high fat foods.

Definitely stay away from High Fat Foods...me personally I also have to stay away from whole milk, heavy amounts of cheese, etc.  Whole milk always triggers a gallstone attack for me!  Low fat or fat free milk works for me or Carb Countdown milk.

I used to eat a lot of fat free yogurt and fat free turkey slices on sourdough, which was also fat free. It's not easy to make a meal without fat but if it had any fat in it what so ever, I was soon in misery.

Edit: I guess I should add that I did this for only a few months until it was convenient for me to have my gall bladder removed. I was in school at the time and needed to wait for winter break.

I have gallstones also, I get really bad pains when I eat animal fat, its the worst kind of fat to eat, try to stick to lean meats, oh and definatly no deep fried food , spent a night in the hospital after eating KFC.   Also do not go to bed FULL big no no it puts pressure on your organs and it causes the stones to act up.  Trust me I know I lived off percocet, and vicodin for a while.

After I was diagnosed with gallstones, I changed my diet and have had no more gallbladder trouble.  I actually had a  healthy diet before I developed the trouble, but I still made some changes.

I used to eat a normal amount of animal fat (within healthy guidelines).  I cut that amount in half, and made up the difference with nut butters and legumes as a protein source.  I cut out cheese and other high-saturated-fat foods.  Needless to say, you need to cut out junk food and deep-fried food and sweets.

Another change I made was to INCREASE the amount of unsaturated fat that I ate.  This sounds like it is the opposite of normal advice for gallstones.  However, I was eating very little unsaturated fat before I developed the gallbladder problems.  Now I eat 1 or 2 tablespoons of olive oil every day, as well as peanut butter and a little Miracle Whip.

The gallbladder contracts and releases bile to digest fats that you've eaten.  This is the way the gallbladder is supposed to behave.  I believe that you must eat some fat when you have gallstones in order to force the gallbladder to contract.  Otherwise the bile builds up and causes problems.

I eat peanut butter first thing in the morning when I wake up.  The fat causes the gallbladder to contract, and I feel better after this happens.

I hope my layman's advice is useful for someone here who suffers from gallstones.  For those posters who can't eat any fat at all without feeling sick, I think you need to see your doctor, as a total nonfat diet is not sustainable.
