Eating 500 Calories a Day

I've been eating 500 calories a day in fruit and stuff. Is this considered being anorexic? Eating this many calories won't do anything bad to me I'm thinking.

Holy cow, yes, that's bad.  You need to eat more than that - not knowing how active you are or your stats, but even sedentary women need over 1000 calories per day.  At this rate your body will start rebelling against you and you could cause some serious damage.  Please eat more!!!!
Thats considered anorexic. Yes. But sometimes they eat way less, eat like 800 more please, your body will get a lack of energy and will not work right. Just eat more, it's bad beening ED. But it's good eatting food! :)
If you want to lose weight, you NEED to eat more.  Your body isn't getting enough to survive (or it is, barely), and soon it's going to start storing up every bit it gets in an attempt to maintain itself.  It's good that you're having fruits, but just because it's healthy, doesn't mean you can only eat a little of it.  Maybe it's hard to tell yourself this, but look up any thread or anywhere online and no where will it say that eating 500cal/day is good for you, no matter how healthy the food.  It IS bad for your body.  If you're trying to become thinner to be more fit/attractive, remember that the best looking people look HEALTHY. Eat at LEAST 1200 healthy calories/day and work out, and the weight will come off and STAY off.

"Fruit and stuff", huh?  Well, normally I don't get all absolutist or anything, but unless you're fasting (for reasons other than losing weight), that amount of calories over a long period of time WILL do bad things to your body.  Aside from the metabolic equation (which is a serious one), that kind of pattern can lead to heart damage.

It simply is not possible to give your body all the nutrients it needs on a daily basis to function on 500 cals/day.  Where is your protein coming from?  Calcium?  Fiber?  Potassium?  I don't care what fruit you're eating, it does not supply enough of any given nutrient to be a healthy way of eating long term.

Yes that is bad. Ive read most of your posts and it seems to me like your just trying different ways to ask the same question, like you arent getting the response you want? I dont know. But what I do know is that when I started eating 500 calories a day I did loose weight and then around 4 months later I started gaining weight... alot.. and I diddnt understand why so I just decreased my calories and still I kept on gaining weight  I started desperately searching the internet for reasons why, I would have never in a million years to have diagnosed my self as anorexic, but that was exactly what I was, it really does progress at a rediculoius rate.  and can be hard to controll once begun. Im lucky I found this site or else I would be on the same track. Anyways to relate this to you. If you havent started eating 500 calories a day and are just looking for people with experiences with it DONT! ive done it, it doesnt work. I eat alot more now and im acually loosing weight. What people say about "starvation mode" is actually true. please if you havent started dont. You wont see the bad effects right away but you will see them.
500 calories?? i used to take only 500 calories and i lost my periods! i cant eat more than 500 calories for now! ive been doing this for 3 months i guess. there were some days when i ate only 150-200 calories, not more and i felt bad.. i had to sit all the time in case to control my body! i really felt weak. but i kept doing some exercises and trained a lot!
so i really wouldnt advice this method!@!!!!!
I have been struggling with anorexia and bulimia for the last 7 years and I can tell you from experience that everything bad will start happening to you and you will eventually die prematurely like I almost did.

I'm not going to lecture you or get into a long list of how my body started shutting down on me, but take all of the advice previously posted before you do damage to your body that you can't reverse.

And eating 500 calories a day is a symptom of anorexia, but it doesn't classify you as an anoretic; the diagnosis is usually given upon the person being a certain percentage below their normal body weight for their height.

In very straight terms, what you are doing is damaging to your body and over the long term you will start seeing the effects. And if you are a teenager, then you are really short-changing yourself and your body. An adult female needs at least 1200 calories a day (adult male is 1500 calories a day) ... teenage males and females require even more to help support and sustain their growing bodies. It would be like trying to drive 100 miles on a gallon of gas ... you aren't going to get to your destination. Food is the 'fuel' for your body - and your destination is a healthy body (or a healthy body in adulthood, if you are a teenager), and if you don't give it at least the amount it requires, then it will not continue to function or mature the way it should.

Please talk to your physician about what is the proper weight for someone your age and height and, if it is deemed necessary you need to lose weight, then ask your doctor about how to do it in a healthy manner, that won't deprive your body of necessary nutrients.

If your doctor put you on a diet, then he should have told you what to eat. If all he said was "eat 500 calories", I would get a new doctor. You do not need to starve yourself to lose weight, and if you have 50 lbs to lose, you could lose weight by eating at least 3 times that much.

Also, please note that this thread is 4 years old and really has little to do with your situation - in the future, it is better to start a new thread, so that people don't get confused and respond to the original poster, rather than you.

I won't bother replying to the OP since this is 4 years old.

prettychena29- This is ridiculous.  It doesn't matter if you're overweight, 500 cal/day is still starvation.  It is what I was eating per day during the worst of my ED.  I lost my period and my hair started falling out BEFORE I even became underweight.  You don't need to be underweight to experience the effects of starvation.

so question what kind of things did you eat to stay in the 500 calorie diet i am put on one but i am so hungry what could i do i do need to lose the weight

So you're asking what I ate as an anorexic.

Seriously?  You are being very dense...

But if you’re still intent on this conquest, this is what you have to look forward to:

  • hair loss
  • amenorrhea
  • weakened bones (caused by loss of period)
  • muscle loss
  • tiredness/fatigue
  • panic attacks (doesn’t happen to everyone, but happened to me)
  • risk of an electrolyte imbalance, which can lead to death
  • risk of organ failure from malnutrition
  • poor complexion (dark circles under eyes, etc.)
  • constant coldness
  • anemia
  • random muscle pains (because your muscles are deteriorating)
  • increased anxiety/irritability
  • obsession over food (seriously… it will even invade your dreams)
  • poor skin (cracked, dry, hands that bleed and never heal because you don’t have enough nutrients to repair them)
  • slowed metabolism, leading to fatigue, sluggishness, coldness, etc.
  • low blood pressure, which can lead to dizzy spells, fainting, etc.

These things can happen even if you aren’t underweight.   500 calories per day is starvation, no matter what your weight is.

omg i am so sorry i sent the wrong message to the wrong person please forgive me i did not mean to offend you in anyway

prettychena29, Calorie Count's mission is to support healthy and sustainable weight management. 500 calories a day is neither healthy nor sustainable, regardless of whether your doctor recommended it or not.

Physicians have very little schooling in the area of diet and nutrition. Blindly taking their word for it when the tell you to eat 500 calories to lose weight is unwise.

I think adrienne nicely summed up the dangers of consuming so few calories. Please seek a second opinion.

Also, should you continue to violate the Posting Guidelines by asking our members to support your starvation diet, we will be forced to moderate your future comments and bring your account under review.

You didn't offend me, but I still stand by what I said. 500 cal/day is unhealthy, period.

Are you sure he didnt mean you to eat 500 cals less that you are eating ATM? Any Dr who suggests a 500 cal diet should be struck off.....

I second this. Any capable doctor would never, ever put anyone on a 500-calorie diet. That's just inconceivable. If losing weight is your goal, you should be eating AT LEAST 1,600 calories while exercising at moderate- to high-intensity for 30-60 minutes most days of the week. There's very little chance anyone can lose weight safely and healthily by going on a severe calorie-restriction diet without exercise.

And yes, 500 calories is definitely a sign of anorexia. If you continue eating this little, you'll quickly damage your body (_adrienne_ listed several symptoms of eating like an anorexic). Please up your caloric intake, eat balanced meals, and just integrate exercise into your life if you want to lose weight.

1) Get a new doctor.

2) A 500 calorie 'diet' will not help you lose weight in the long term. Best case scenario, you are unable to sustain it and go back to your normal eating habits (if not worse, with cravings as a result of having restricted).

Worst case scenario? You do sustain it, and eventually your body gives out and you end up in hospital or dead.
