Feeling so gassy!

Quote  |  Reply

Hi, I've been feeling really gassy for about a month now .. I've been having really bad stomach aches, and I've been passing a lot of foul-smelling gas, along with many trips to the toilet. I've recently been eating a lot of vegetables, candies with sugar alcohols, a lot of sugar substitutes like aspritame, and I've also switched to this delicious vanilla soy milk .. does anyone know if these may be possible reasons for my upset stomach? =( Please help!

I know all about this and can tell you it is the veggies!! I love to munch on veggies all day long but the trade off is extremly smelly gasEmbarassed I don't know why this happens but I think it is all the fiber.

Awww man =( I love veggies! Today I ended up eating a lot of bread and oatmeal because I thought I really needed something substantial .. I did end up having some veggies on my sub, as well as 2 bowls of fruit .. and I had a lot of sugar additives .. ahh .. I think I need to stop with so much fibre =S

You might want to go to the doctor's office to find out.  My sister has a digestive disorder that sometimes makes her gassy, but even more so, she winds up getting stomach pains.  May be a bit lower, below the waist/intestinal.  But, things like corn, leafy greens, broccoli...they are horrible for her to eat.  They cause her pain (including popcorn).  And seeds are bad for her too.  So, you might want to just get a check up just in case.

Thanks a lot .. I'm actually going to go first thing tomorrow .. I really hope I'm okay *crosses fingers* =( what happens to your sister? Does she have to take certain drugs?

I'd suggest eliminating some of the things in your diet one at a time.  Vegetables and fruit can cause gas but it wouldn't be foul-smelling.  How about knocking the aspartame and candies on the head for a week and seeing if that makes a difference?  Excessive amounts of sweetners and sugars can act as a laxative and cause diarrhoea

Yes, I think that's a good idea. I'm getting ready for the doctor's .. wish me luck! =S

I can't have aspartame or other sugar alcohols for that very reason. I would cut that out first. Theres no reason to cut out the natural stuff (fruits and veggies). Real sugar is better for you anyway! If you want the sweet without the calories, try Stevia, it is a plant based sweetner that is low/no calorie and low-glycemic.

Try eating yogurt.

I just came back from the doctor's .. he said it was probably because I was consuming too many legumes, which I can definitely agree with! I work at a salad bar where we can put whatever we want in our salad and I pretty much eat an omelette every morning with mixed veggies, contatining carrots, corn, peas and lima beans. Somedays after a workout, I finish an entire can of chickpeas! Haha .. and I don't even want to get started on what I put in my salads! Anyway, I was reading about this "BRAT" diet which includes bananas, rice, applesauce/apples (some websites vary), and toast. Basically, it includes low-fibre foods, which are dry and absorb extra acid in the tummy. I've eaten 2 bananas, an apple, 3 slices of toast with 1 tsp becel light, and a lot of blueberry herbal tea, and I'm feeling well enough to go to work today! So much for cutting breads out of my diet, ha .. I see why I need to include it now .. oh well, I'm not complaining ;) . The doctor said proteins and things like that were fine. I think I should buy my regular 1% milk now, because I switched to soymilk and I know soybeans are legumes =O .. who knew such small change could do this to a person!

Thank you all so much for your responses, you were all so helpful!!!

yes, veggies will give you gas but i do think its the artificial sweetners that are causing the main problem.  on the labels of sugar free candies and things..it actually states that it can cause gas, bloating and diarhea in may people.  my stomach can handle it most of the time, but there are alot of people that cannot tolerate it.

Well, it's good to know all is alright =)  My sister has Chrone's disease.  And she was on the BRAT diet for a while.  Especially when medical people aren't sure what's wrong digestively, that's what they prescribed from what I've heard.  Anyone can eat it, it's healthy, and they don't bother you at all.  Although, I thought it was tea, lol.  Never on it myself, but my sis hated it after a very short period of time.

I have the cure for you.  BEANO does NOT work.  However, Apple Cidar Vinegar tablets DO!!

Take 2 after each meal.  I swear by this stuff.  It may taste bad going down, but it will definitely save you in the gas and stomach aches.

I have that disorder as well.  Mine is labeled crohn's disease.  My body has a terrible time trying to break down veggies and fruits and it caused me alot of gas and bloating, not to mention frequent bathroom trips.  However, one symptom of this disorder is weight loss.  I had lost 50lbs in the 6 months it took to diagnose.  That is one of the tall tail signs, as well as foods, such as corn, coming out whole in your bms.

More than likely, it is just the fiber.

I get the same way when I increase my 'fake sugar' intake. There was a while where I would feel so bloated and gassy, and it really stunk (like seriously bad), and it was when I was eating tons of 'sugar free' hard candy and drinking crystal light like a mad woman. I really think mine was caused from the fake sugar. I say cut down on the fake intake, and try to eat fresh fruits and veggies to see if that doesn't help. Honest! It's helped me some.

I just read this link- thanks for the tip.

I can't believe how many benefits  Apple cider vinegar has.

Berrywrap....

Haha...I spelled that completely wrong.  Crohn's.  Actually, when she was first diagnosed, she had lost a whole bunch of unhealthy weight.  Looked like skin and bones.  But, it fluctuates.  There are plenty of times that just eating normal things at an average weight makes her pack on the pounds.  It varies quite a bit for her.  It took a while for the rest of us to get it that sometimes you gain a bunch.
