Hair is still not growing back :(

Two summers ago when trying to lose weight, my hair started to fall out a lot. I posted on the message boards and figured out that I was severely under eating with all the exercise I was doing. I started to eat more calories and the weight still came off. Eventually, my hair stopped falling out, but it was very thin, and lacked its shine.

Fast forward a year to today, and my hair is still very thin and doesn't shine like it used to. I want my thick, healthy hair backFrown

Have any of you experienced this and what did you do to get your hair to grow back and have its healthy shine? Did you use any special shampoo?

I am wondering if this could be related to my current lifestyle, as my 18 y/o brother who lives a very similar lifestyle is experiencing the dull hair that is thinning too. We are both active and at very healthy.

Here are some details about my current lifestyle... Any suggestions as to why my hair is still so thin would be appreciated.

I am 21y/o, 5'10' and 136 lbs. I usually run 2-3 miles a day. For the past year I have been trying to maintain my weight and eat 1700-2200 cals a day depending on how hungry I am.  My breakfasts include various foods from the following: plain greek yogurt, kashi go lean cereal, fiber one cereal, Quaker old fashioned oatmeal, egg whites, blueberries, strawberries. My lunches are usually filled with tons of veggies. I normally eat a salad and it could include: cucumbers, red peppers, carrots, tomatoes, celery, various beans. Instead of dressing I put 2% cottage cheese or tuna on top of my salad. I often have a sandwich of whole wheat bread, salsa and turkey, or an almond butter sandwich on whole wheat bread. Snacks are usually apples or kashi granola bars or almonds. Dinner is usually a protein (chicken, fish, turkey), steamed veggies (asparagus, green beans, or other veggies), beans or a baked potato. Sometimes, I eat a lean pocket if I am in a hurry and don't have time to cook.

My family tends to buy very healthy. Our pantry consists of cheerios, shreded wheat, oatmeal, whole grain pasta, cans of beans, cans of salsa, cans of almond & peanut butter, sugar free jelly, healthy soups, tuna, almonds, walnuts, peanuts and our fridge is stocked with plain yogurt, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, lots of fruits and veggies, skim milk, whole wheat bread. Also, my family avoids added sugars- in everything we buy, we try to buy the food brand with the least sugars (breads, salad dressings, jelly, cereals, yogurts etc). Also, we rarely eat out. Lastly, I love coffee and tea and drink this frequently (drink the coffee black).

Is my healthy diet affecting my hair? Any suggestions and what I am doing wrong?

Your BMI is 19.5, which is technically in the lower range of 'healthy', but of course we can't determine what 'healthy' is for us, only our bodies can. I would also like to point out that your 1700-2200 range sounds more appropriate for a completely sedentary lifestyle. I think you should be able to maintain on more like 2500ish calories. That being said, if you are maintaining on less than you should, your weight may be too low for you.

See this website below for a more acurate daily burn amount (many 'regular' BMR estimaters tend to underestimate for some reason). I put in your stats, and assuming you sleep 8 hours a day, you would burn 1830 calories a day if you are sitting down and doing nothing else the entire day. Now, very rarely do people actually sit down the entire day, there are mini activities like walking around the house, cooking, going to work/school/places, and those little things can add up. And in addition to that, you exercise. Makes sense right?

It's great that your family tends to eat heathy. Protein and essential fatty acids promote hair growth, so perhaps also check if you are getting enough of those. I do remember reading somewhere once that caffeine may be detrimental to hair growth, but I'm not 100% sure there.

Hey I'm sorry you're having health issues.

 

Something you could try is oil massages for your scalp, use olive oil and get someone to massage it or massage it yourself into your scalp. (wash after three hours) Try doing it weekly.

 

Thuis helps the scalp to strangthen a bit and the hair to get some shine back :)

Also have a look at your nails, are they growing fast or slow? Cracking? I have friendwho is studying the effects offood on the health of a person, and she said that when your nails are a bit week, your hair is too. She told me this years ago, and everytime my nails stop growing, I get a haircut!

You could even add some uncooked olive oil to your salad for instance, it'll help nourish you with the healthy fats your body needs.

I agree with Antibinge, that given your age, height, and exercsie, you aren't eating enough. the body views loads of glossy hair as a luxury, and you're not giving it enougn for such luxuries!

I had problems with hair loss, too, and someone mentioned multi-vitamis with biotin. It's taken 9 months, but I am starting to see much more hair growth, adn it's bouncy rather than straight and straggly now. I love it! i have to say though, I was anorexic, and the biotin has coincided with much better nurtition, so whether it is either one of these factors or both, i don't know!! - can't hurt to try it though!

Your body is telling you that you need to consume more fats and oils in your diet. There is nothing wrong with Olive Oil or full fat milk products (I'm 51lbs down on a diet where I consume full fat milk products every day). I also agree that if you are maintaining, you need to eat more.

As far as topical things you can do for your hair, I don't wash my hair with shampoo and conditioner anymore. I wash my hair with baking soda, a few tablespoons in a glass full of hot water, as hot as I can stand it. I pour this mixture onto the roots of my hair and massage it into my scalp (not necessary to pour it on your ends). Rinse well. Then I condition my hair with a 1/4cup of apple cider vinegar in a quart of water (as hot as I can stand) and saturate all my hair and scalp with it. Rinse with cool water. Before I get out of the shower I take a little bit of lavendar scented baby oil and work it through my hair. I only do this to my hair twice a week, it stays much cleaner and healthier than if I washed it with nasty detergents everyday. I don't get split ends as often and my hair is less frizzy and more manageable. The notion that you need to wash your hair everyday was forced upon us by the shampoo companies so they sell more product.

After reading all your posts, I have another question:

One days that I am completely sedentary how much should I consume? (don't want to gain)

I don't know much about BMI and such, and I don't know if you're still experiencing any kind of hair loss, but if you are you should try the nioxin hair system. I have a crazy thyroid that made my hair thin out to the point where I'd be sitting in the shower crying about it. Nioxin is making my hair come back, slowly but surely :)
