Okay, so during the school year I have a ton of school work. This results in me staying up late (1ish) and waking up early (6-7ish) So I only get 5-6 hours of sleep. Is this really bad for me, or is it okay? I just want to know if I should be getting more sleep or not. Oh, I'm 16. I hope this is the right forum for this question.
Im jelous, i havent slept for 3 days straight, yep its 3:40 in the morning for me here....fun times

Alot of my friends got to bed at ridiculous o'clock in the morning and get up early for college, but its individual i think, some people need more sleep than others, if you feel fine on the amount of sleep your getting, i think its ok, but if your tired, allow yourself more sleep :)

I agree with suzidee. To my knowledge a healthy amount of sleep is somewhere between 7-9 hours, where deviations are okay, but neither less nor more is good over a long term. Effects on your health can vary, too. So it's hard to pinpoint symptoms to this cause. Many effects can be on the psyche, which - I guess - has to do with our need for dreams (REM sleep).
From what I've seen people often pressure themselves into sleeping less to appear as a more functional part of society. So it's more like a vanity thing to be able to brag about how little sleep on needs.
That's not to discount sleeping disorders, but more often than not people seem to see sleeping less as more in line with modern life ... as wasting ones lifetime, so to speak.
If you want a fulfilling dream life, read up on lucid dreaming though. No need to "waste" the ~8 hours of sleep entirely every night. It's a skill one can learn and it's all but some kind of voodoo.
I'm in college now, so I sure hear your woes. When I was in high school, sleeping for 7 hours was a luxury. Some of my friends got less than 6 hours of sleep!
Still, I was very insistent to get at least 6 hours of sleep. When you sleep, your brain works to convert your short term memory to long term memory (This is real, read it from some scientific article!). There were days when I was afraid of sleeping so early (compared to my peers) as it seems like I'm slacking, but then I'd remind myself that over-exhaustion will not make the material stay in my brain longer; I'm better off sleeping. Remember this the next time you plan to pull an all-nighter.
You're only 16, and some words of advice: if you're regularly staying up till so late just to finish your work, you may want to review your study habits. Getting more organized, switching off distractions, planning your time better, reducing priorities all help to save some time in your day, and you may realise you could be able to sleep earlier than you think! Such habits are also beneficial in your later schooling years too!

I routinely got 5-6 hours of sleep a night during college. However, I often bolstered my sleep with naps during the day 1-2 hours. However, I did end up gaining a lot of weight during this time probably because of the lack of sleep and dietary issues which I only figured out a year ago.
I now really can't deal with any less than 7 hours of sleep. I still take naps when I need them though, but not every day like I did in college. Most week nights, I'm asleep by 9-9:30 so I can get up at 4:30-5 to get to the gym before work. I'm starting to feel old (I'm 26) because I'm starting to get sleepy around 7:30 now.

I was actually about to post with the same question. I generally get about 5.5-6 hours of sleep a night, sometimes as little as 5 hours when I'm up late or get woken up in the night for some reason. I feel fine, and in fact I seem to be incapable of sleeping more than about 7 hours (even on weekends, my eyes snap open at 7:30 or 8 in the morning, no matter how late I was up), but everything I've heard about our bodies' sleep needs tells me that this is way too little and will ruin my health and impair brain function! I hope I'm the exception to the rule, because I'm in my third year of uni and I don't see this changing anytime soon...
I'm exactly the same as epinepherine...regardless of when I go to sleep, I wake up at 6:30-7:00 exactly, even if I didn't get to sleep until 4 AM. (Terrible, I know.)
I think that some people are naturally just programmed to sleep less than others. My father and I go to bed late, wake up fairly early, and feel fine, whereas my mom and sister require at least 7 hours of sleep in order to feel rested.
If I force myself to get more rest because I think it's healthier, I end up feeling sluggish and bad, which is the opposite of what you're aiming for!
If you feel good with 5-6 hours of sleep, go ahead and stick with that. If you don't feel good sleeping like that, maybe you should consider getting a little more zzzzzzz's. :)
I'm always more moody during the school year. I'm not sure if this is from my lack of sleep, or from the stress of school. Either way, I'm too busy to take naps, and even on the weekends I have early morning activities.

iris i know this might not be your concern but i will post t here for the other users of the health and support site... i had insomnia for years..... turns out I was just so hungry, my brain was in that total alert stage all the time, it could not fall asleep because it was hoping that i would just get up and eat something.... she (my brain) was trying to keep me alive) .
when i started eaing more and now, much better i can sleep 8 or 9hrs a night. i still wake up at 7 no matter when i fall asleep, but its a start

really try it, before bed I would eat peanut butter on toast and it really helped me. Of course i was scared of bingeing, but having a peanut butter sandwich at 10pm was much better than a, not sleeping or b, finally getting up at 3am and eating a carton of white yogurt or other safe foods.
