Does it mean I'm overweight if my stomach isn't flat..?

Quote  |  Reply

It's flat if I'm hungry, but then I eat and its not. I exercise and do crunches, push-ups, etc. but my stomach poking out drives me insanneeee. I mean I know I'm not obese by any means, but I just feel like I look horrible. eck.

For godssake. No.

You're only overweight if your BMI is higher than 25.  If your stomach protrudes slightly after eating it's quite normal.

Back in the wonderful days when I was 18 and doing weight training in the gym I had many body building friends.  These men - and women - were "cutting" i.e. seeking to compete in body building competitions.  Many whose weight was spot on found difficulty with their abs area!  Its perfectly normal for it to be bigger after you eat so you are ok!

I'm sorry, but I'm going to be blunt...."getting down to 85"!  Hello!  You're probably UNDERWEIGHT!  I wouldn't consider this "getting to a healthier weight".  Maybe you should talk to a nutritionist or a doctor.  Maybe they'll be able to answer your questions or get you some help.  Not trying to be mean.

Your stomach "pokes out" because your body is biologically programmed to hang on to that little pocket of fat there.  It is cushioning and protection for your reproductive organs.  Your stomach will never be 100% flat, because people are simply not intended to have straight lines in their shapes.

I thought the only way to tell if you were over weight was if your thighs touched...

Not to mention the simple idea that food takes up space in your belly!

It could be that your transverse abdominus needs some work. Most people only work on the vertical ab muscles (i.e. the 6-pack). However, there is a horizontal abdominal muscle called the transverse abdominus that holds your guts in place and acts as a natural weight belt. Over the years (if you don't exercise it), it begins to sag under the weight of your innards. There is an exercise called the "vacuum" that can help strengthen the muscle and make your tummy flat. Go to Google and search on "transverse abdominus vacuum".

Floggingscully was being sarcastic. There was another post awhile ago that said that someone's friend told them that if your thighs touched, you were fat. Much like this post, it's RIDICULOUS. Although I think this one is even MORE ridiculous...your stomach pokes out after you eat because there's FOOD IN THERE.

And at 94 pounds (looking to get down to 85????), I wonder how much a belly even full of food can 'poke out'.

of course not!  and, please, please, please, don't ever feel like you need to be 85 lbs.  How tall are you?  because I am 5'2.5" and got down to 82 lbs because I had an eating disorder, and I really harmed my health.  I'm not implying you do have an ed, just that you should be careful, and you are almost definietely at a healthy weight already.  please love your body and take care of yourself - remember, you are not a number on the scale!

85 pounds is a good goal if you're 4'6". Are you 4'6"?
youre already underweight i read your other post

you are 17 years old 94lbs at 4'11 that is underweight. a goal of 85lb puts you at a bmi 17.2  maybe your stomach is protruding b/c you're malnourished.

you should be eating much more you arent even fully grown!

you ARE killing yourself slowly but surely.

i use to be a ballet dancer and have seen all sorts if ed's  not to be mean but you need help.

you dont need to be worrying about your weight you should be worried about all the health problems that will come out being severly underweight if you are indeed going to get to your 85lb goal

dont mean to be mean but you should seek help
I don't think I've been 85 pounds since... maybe 3rd or 4th grade... and THAT'S when I should have been worried about being 85 pounds.  When I was 4 ft 3 or so.

Let's see... 4 ft 11... Why don't you gain a few pounds?  My mother looked VERY good at 125 - 130 lb.  But...

Coming from one short girl to another... If you were 194, then yeah, lose some weight, like I am (currently 177, from 198!), but if you're 94 lb, you need to at least build a little bit of muscle, if you don't want any fat.

LOL I knew she was being sarcastic  :)    I read the other thread.  I don't post much but I couldn't help "LOL" when she posted that.

The simple answer is no, because the female body is a curved shape. Turn sideways, stand up straight (straighten your spine) and you'll see it. Your stomach is never going to be perfectly flat because that's like trying to lose weight to make your face flat. People just aren't shaped that way.

Now, in digitally altered posters and magazine covers you will see flat tummies AND bright skin, healthy looking faces, etc. However in the real world if your stomach is flat that means you're dead.

I know its scary being insecure about your body, but believe me you are its harshest critic.

It also MIGHT be the case that your belly is "poking out" more than normal because you are malnourished. Sometimes when people starve to death you will see that they have swollen stomaches.. I'm not sure what this is called but obviously the swelling isn't from fat.

Assuming that the information you entered on another post is correct, age 17, height 4'11", weight 95 lbs...then you are at a healthy weight with a BMI of 19.  For your age and height, 91 is the lowest you would want to aim for if you were going for the 18.5 BMI which is the lowest healthy BMI available.  Your goal weight of 84 lbs is too low, and unhealthy.

Check out this site for teen calorie and BMI info.

I've decided to up my goal three pounds, and thanks for the concern but I do NOT have an eating disorder for sure!
