Knee injury

Quote  |  Reply

So I fell yesterday HARD and landed on my left knee on concrete.  Ouch.  Today it's pretty swollen and very painful to move or bend.  It didn't turn any pretty colors though so I was thinking because of that, and since I can still move it a little that it's probably not broken.  It really sucks because I am in Boston on vacation but instead of being out doing stuff I am sitting in the hotel room and on cc.  :(

Wow what a bummer.

Are you icing the knee down?

Sorry for your pain, hope you can get back to vacationing ASAP.

That stinks!

I fell at the ice rink and broke my kneecap in half.  I skated off, walked to the car and drove home afterward, so being able to bend/walk is not 100% foolproof for assessing a break.  May not be broken, but may be.

I'd say if it's not improved by tomorrow, get it checked at one of those Patient First/EmergiCare places.
ouch!

you should go to an ER or a Doctor to have it x-rayed.  Feel better!  order movies and room service!

I wasn't but I am now, thanks for the suggestion.  Hopefully it will help.

Yikes, kallie!  I hope that isn't the case with me, but I will definitely get it checked tomorrow if not better.  I felt it and it feels like there is a ridge or bump in the middle - I wasn't sure if that is just swelling or if something is out of place.  When I broke my arm it turned all kinds of black and blue so I figured this would do the same if it was broken, but maybe not?  What did they have to do to your leg - did you have to get a cast or something?  I really would not enjoy that, esp. on vacation and having to fly back home next week!!

Popping in to see how the knee is doing.....

Fuzzys, I was in a leg brace from hip to ankle for 8 weeks.  Not fun, but not as itchy as a cast.

I hope it's better today!!!!!

Ouch!  I so feel sorry for you!  I can relate though.  When I was 16 I tore my ACL completely in half and my meniscus in half and flipped it over.  I had to have complete reconstructive surgery with a full 6 month  rehabilitation.  It was horrible!  I wouldn't have wished it on my worse enemy. Then when I was 17 I tore my meniscus again snow skiing.  I had arthroscopic surgery to fix it and was told that they couldn't completely repair it and I will inevitably have knee pain the rest of my life.  Well the 1st time I tried to run at full speed after the surgeries, it completely gave way and crashed to the ground.  My knee was the 1st thing that hit.  It sent such a shot of pain through my leg that it went numb.  But it turned out to be just a really bad bruise.  So my suggestion to you is take really good care of it and keep ice on it.  If you are really really concerned, have a doc check it out.  But, I wouldn't see where spending the extra $$ on an emergency room visit would be necessary.

I don't want to put a damper on things, but a women in our city Toronto, who works on a show called Breakfast Televsion fell just like you and did major damage. You should get it x-rayed for sure. I really hope it is just bruised and that you will be up and running around in no time.

Thanks for all the replies and concern everyone! :)

I iced my knee off and on yesterday and today.  It is a little better today but it tends to get stiff because I keep it straight most of the time - it's still hard to bend.  I didn't go to a Doctor, but I did call one and he told me if I am able to bear weight, walk around, and bend it like I can, he doesn't think it's broken just bruised.  So today I got out and did a little walking around - it's not too bad except stairs are a killer, so I've been using the wheelchair ramps whenever I can.  That and I look like a dork limping around. :)  Hopefully it will be OK enough tomorrow to do a 2 hour walking tour of Boston, but we'll see...!

Hey fuzzys you could always hit a pharmacy and pick up a random inexpensive cane. I have found one indispensable in a similar situation. Really helps take the weight off and keep you in the game even if not at full speed!

So glad things are improved today!

Update: after hobbling around Boston the past few days I came to the conclusion it wasn't getting any better (still swollen/painful) so I broke down and went to the Dr. today.  It was a relief to find out nothing was broken (although not surprising I guess; I didn't think I would be as mobile as I have been with a broken bone).  They said I ruptured the knee bursa which is why it is so swollen.  They wrapped it for me and there is pretty much nothing to do but wait for it to heal - rest, ice, staying off it, etc.  That is something that pretty much heals itself though, I'm told.  Anyone else done this to themselves?

Oh gosh right knee four times and cracked the cap twice, left knee once.

Raging tomboy, horses, forestry worker, three brothers, dirt bikes, complete klutz...comes with the territory i guess. Smile

So glad it's not broken fuzzys, but what you do have going on is quite painful and downright irritating.

How's Boston?

It's fun!  :)  Didn't make the Freedom Walk yet, though.  We may try it on Sunday before we fly out if the knee is feeling better.

OK, so my knee feels better but now I have 2  "knots" - one above the kneecap and one below it.  The one above is much bigger than the other.  Is this normal part of the healing process (it's been over 2 weeks) for a ruptured knee bursa, or is something wrong?  It doesn't hurt at all but I'm still afraid to exercise since it's not back to "normal".

I would talk to a doctor. That doesn't sound right to me o.o

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
