why do I look skinnier than people who weigh less?

Hi, I have been putting on weight and plan to put another stone on but I still seem really skinny compared to people who are lighter than me yet similar height (ie lower bmi) why is this or could my mind just be playing tricks on me? Thanks.

It could well be your mind playing tricks on you, if you are used to feeling too skinny, it can take a while to change that mindset. Same as people who have lost excess weight but still feel 'too fat'.

However, physiologically, it could just be that a) you are more muscular than most of your friends so you weigh more but don't look as large (muscle is denser than fat)

and/or b) that you have a larger frame for your height so you look thinner at a given BMI than they do. One or two of my friends are like this - I'm always surprised how much they weigh and they don't look remotely big, but do have larger hips, ribs and wrists ect.

Hope that helps!

Don't compare yourself to other people.  Your body is unique to you and you have to look after it as best you can.   If others have a lower BMI than you then they are probably not in good shape and they need to be making their own decisions.   Gain your extra stone, be healthy, be independent, do what's right for you every time ..... it's your life, you only get one shot at it and there's no point constantly looking over your shoulder at what others are doing.

I feel the same too!  How tall are you and how much do you weigh?  I am 5'6" and weigh about 155-160.  I look fine, but the scale says I weigh a ton!  I wear a size 8 and eat very healthy.  I could wear a smaller size, but am restricted by the size of my thighs!

Some ideas on why I weigh more:  I am curvier than most I suppose.  I have more muscle than most women that weigh less.  I would not say I have a larger frame (my wrists, ankles, and waist are all small) but I do have wide hips, a big head (heavy brain I guess-lol), and I do not have "skinny" thighs.  My thighs are large/muscular in comparison to most.  I have two sisters that have thin thighs and they both weigh less and are taller.  They are around 120-126 pounds and 5'8 to 5'10"!   I can't imagine weighing 125 pounds!  Both struggle with trying to keep weight on.

I am just built different.   It sounds like you are too!

It will not help either of you to compare your heights and weights.

The issue with me is I'm skinner than other people despite weighing more where as you appear comfortable with how your weight looks. Just my body type I guess. Thanks for the replies.

Hi pknb. No I am actually way skinnier than other people my height who weigh the same amount too, even though I weigh more. My waist is only 27" and while I have wide hips and muscular thighs I am in proportion. So I wear a size 8 while most girls that are 160 would wear a size 12 or 14.......... I think it has to do with muscle weighing more than fat. It sounds like you think you look good, so you really don't need to ask everyone what they think.  And it also sounds like you are unwilling to share more information with us about yourself.

And if you don't give us your dress size, weight, and photos of how you look, how can we really tell you what we think.  All we are doing is guessing.  Weight does not matter anyway.  How healthy you are by what you eat and how much you exercise are the important things..........   Send us all a day's food log and let us know how much you exercise:)
