Low blood pressure & pulse

Quote  |  Reply

My blood pressure has been 78/55 and my resting pulse has been 48. When I did a google search, all of these webpages kept on mentioning how this is consistent with anorexia. I don't think I have anorexia. My BMI is 19.1 and I eat 1600-1900 calories each day. I also walk/run 5-6 times a week and burn roughly 300-400 calories. I also read that having a low blood pressure & pulse could be a sign of heart muscle atrophy, also caused by anorexia.

Tonight while walking my dog I felt like I was going to faint for like 10-15 seconds. This never happened to me before and I immediately began thinking "Oh no, my heart is giving out or I am having a heart attack or something." Shortly thereafter this feeling like I was going faint feeling has gone away and I have been okay ever since.

Before joining calorie count (CC) few years ago, I never paid any attention to my eating. I just ate whenever I felt like it & whatever I wanted. I was never overweight but had a high-normal BMI. Since joining CC I have been watching my calories & food intake. I lost 50 pounds through diet and exercise. Now I am trying to maintain my weight.

Is my low blood pressure & pulse a sign that something is wrong with me? help! Any advice and tips would be deeply appreciated.

If your bp is that low and you are feeling dizzy, I would def recommend seeing a doctor.  Your electrolytes could be low, or blood sugar could be low.  Your body may require more calories and nutrients.  What types of foods are your eating?

How often are you checking your bp and what times?

I eat a very healthy diet: eggs, oatmeal, fruits, veggies, almonds, whole wheat statches.

I have an automatic blood pressure cuff a home. I also checked my blood pressure at my local pharmacy with their machine and got the same reading. I check it throughout the day.

Hmmm.....

What has your normal bp been?  You could just naturally run low, but since you mentioned you felt dizzy today and that was a new symptom, please go see a doctor.

I wouldn't think you have anorexia nervosa, sounds like you have a normal appetite and you consciously eat well.  Perhaps your body just needs more fuel (calories) for your daily activities... especially in heat.  Make sure you are drinking enough water, pick up some Smart Water or Powerade Zero- replenish your electrolytes.

Muscle atrophy is quite literally a wasting away of the heart muscle, and unless you have some underlying heart or health problems I would assume it safe to say you do not have that.

I have low blood pressure as well and used to feel faint. Did you do a blood test? My doctor had me do one and we realised that I lacked B6. Now I'm taking Bcomplex vitamins and no longer have those fainting problems.

Edit to add: Lacking vitamin B seems to be a problem with vegans. I'm not a vegan, but I just can't absorb things from meat well. Good luck!

your food intake is too low and even if you don't have anorexia according to the strict meaning, you could look up eating disorders because it's sounds like one.

You have to eat over 2000 and less exercise

good luck:)

Simply because I'm in good shape, my pulse rate and blood pressure is a bit below average(still in the healthy range though) However, it used to be extremely low when I was anorexic, and I experienced symptoms of feeling feint and having blurry vision for several seconds, feeling extremely dizzy when exercising, and having my lips and fingertips turn blue in cool weather.

On some days when I end up not eating enough, I'll still get these symptoms. When that happens, I quickly grab a snack and I feel better. 1600-1900 calories is too low for someone with your activity level. You should consume a minimum of 2000 calories, though you probably need even more.

Hey music i noticed you posted a similar question in Apr 2011:

"Today during our health class, we had a health fair and a nurse was taking blood pressures and resting heart rates. My blood pressure was 85/55 and my resting heart rate is 55. Should I be concerned??

Oh yeah and I am 21y/o college student, 5' 10"  and weigh 135-140ish".

Did you follow up with a doctor then? I think these heart rate/blood pressure numbers seem pretty normal and consistent for you.

Hope you're feeling well and keep us posted!
