What is the minimum amount of sodium you should have?

Quote  |  Reply

I usually try to stay under 2500mg ( I know that's the maximum), some days I have 1600mg. I know we all need some salt ( see this ) I'm just wondering how much salt we should have. So what's the lowest amount of sodium we should have and how much salt is that?

500 mg is the minimum, so you're fine

How many grams of salt is 2500mg of sodium?  In the Uk we're told to eat less than 6g of salt.

When I was pregnant I cut way back on my sodium-even rinsed out the tuna before eating it. The result was I got sick to my stomach. When I increased the sodium that went away.

It's ok I found it out.

  • High is more than 1.5g salt per 100g (or 0.6g sodium) per 100g
  • Low is 0.3g salt or less per 100g (or 0.1g sodium) per 100g
  • Salt = sodium x 2.5

so 2500mg of sodium = 6250mg of salt

So I will aim for 2000mg of sodium

i know 500mg is the minimum and 2300 or something is the max.

In the last century in certain areas of Africa there were wars waged because of salt. In some places it was valued more than diamonds, as a matter of fact, workers at diamond mines would steal diamonds to exchange it for salt.

That's because low levels of sodium affect digestion, metabolic rate and  alkaloids, which are essential for nervous system functions. Avg. intake of less than 500 mg over long periods of time can cause  fake Alzheimers.

I wouldn't worry about it.  As has been pointed out 500 mg per day is the recommended minimum, but for the vast, vast majority of people (in developed countries, at least), the problem isn't getting the minimum of sodium, it's getting too much.  The maximum recommended per day is 2,400, so you're fine.
