Minocycline? How did it affect you?

Quote  |  Reply

Have any of you ever had to take minocycline for acne or other bacterial infections? Did you ever get dizzy, fatigued, more irritable, and more nauseous than usual? What about your appetite? How was that affected? I took it 3 years ago, but I started getting acne flare ups again, and my doc put me back on it. I never had symptoms like these when I used it before, but now that I've gotten back on the pill, I'm just not feeling so well...will it take a little while for my body to get used to it or something do u think? hmmm...any advice or tips would be nice

(I take it as SOON as I wake up in the morning, and I wait 1.5 to 2 hours before eating anything for breakfast)

Yes, I took it for a couple of days for a bacterial infection. But I couldnt handle the dizzyness so they switched my prescription. Anyways dizzyness is the #1 side effect for monocycline. I dont know if in time your body will get used to it. But if your experiencing any symptoms of the medicine to an extent that it affects your daily activities, then you should consult your doctor and see if their is an alternative for your acne problems.
The only thing I remember was a bit of a queezy stomach for about two weeks when I started taking it (naturally I was able to eat through the pain haha).  I ended up switching to bactrim (sp?) about a month later for unrelated reasons.  It is a sulfa drug though, I'm not sure how your body reacts to those.

I took it for a few months for acne. No impact whatsoever, and I eventually had to take Accutane.

Btw, Minocycline, as the name suggests, is a Tetracycline-class drug, not a sulfa drug.

Oh my gosh I can't believe someone posted something about this drug. I took this years ago in college and I swear it did a number of things to me. It changed the color of my nails to a blueish grayish color with dark streaks down them. It's so bad and embarrasing that I constantly wear fingernail polish. I can't even get artificial nails because the color still shows through. I also believe it caused a darkening in my eyelid area and lips. I have dark spots on the inner side of my bottom lip.

You may ask "how do you know this drug caused these side effects". Well through countless hours of research I found this out. Also my dermatologist has been working with me and she found an article that suggested drugs from this family may cause this side effect including tetracycline of which I also took while in college. I was so desperate to stop my occasional cystic acne breakouts. Now I think I would have been better off on accutane.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a cure or remedy to return my nails back to their natural color? This often causes me to get depressed because I'm so sick and tired of hiding it but it's too ugly to show!!Cry

I am so glad someone posted on this! I started taking this last summer for acne and using an ointment for my face. I broke out in a rash and just decided to stop taking both which I know isnt always the best to stop taking antibiotics but i did anyway. Well last week I started to take the Minocycline again and I was so sick and dizzy and I honestly felt depressed and had really bad anxiety. I had a hard time sleeping too and to me it was not worth feeling that way at all! I dont know how long it takes to get used to but I stopped taking it right away because I was feeling terrible. Anyway I dont think you are the only one! I would ask your dr. if there is something else you can take that will work better for your body. Good luck!

it made me sick when i first started taking it, so i said screw the directions and i take it with food.  once i started taking it with food, i stopped getting sick.  it probably reduces the efficacy (i take it 2x per day) but at least i dont feel like im going to puke or pass out.  and if im careful about taking it and washing my face several times a day AND using the retin-A, my face is almost sort of clear.  almost.
dm840 I meant that Bactrim is a sulfa drug, not minocycline.  My roommate had a really bad reaction to it last year because bactrim is a sulfa drug....it was really scary.
I take bactrim now periodically. Maybe once a week just to keep the flare ups away.

i have just been to my dermatologist and he prescribed minocycline 100mg 2/ day and differin gel. I dont know if i should even take it now. I have a lot of acne scarring on my chin and a few pimples on my face in general. Its the scarring that i mainly want to get rid of ....What do i do??????

I have tried proactive and it severely irritated my skin

I started taking minocycline 3 months ago at 100mg/day with differin gel at night and erythromycine gel in the daytime. I was having severe migraines and nausea.  I didn't put all the side-effects together until my mom asked me why my nail bed was turning a dark color...I added I was also having yeast infection.

Googled the side-effects of minocycle....and all except the nail thing was there.

It took a month to see the effects of minocycline on my acne and another couple of weeks to completely clear them out.  I stopped using minocycline for about 3 weeks prior to my dermatologist appointment today...since then my nail color is going back to normal but my acne is flaring up again.

Dermatologist put me on a lower dosage of minocycline again for 50mg/day for the next 3 months --- she said this should lower the side effects but all are unavoidable specially the migraines.  She refuses to switch me to another medicine for now...

I was on it twice too, once as a teenager - it cleared up my acne then, and I didn't have the dizziness. I was put on it again in september, but I had a lot of dizziness, and then an allergic reaction, so obviously that stopped. None of the other antibiotics worked this time either, so I'm on accutane now.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
