Night Eating Syndrome
hi. im recovering from anorexia. im doing pretty good now. my lowest weight was 130lbs at 6"1 when i was 17 back in september 2011 but now i am 18 and up to 160lbs... when i gained most of my weight back more recently and when i was really going "balls to the walls" with eating lots (i was at 145 for a long time and in a month i got up to 160) i would get up at night and eat to get some extra calories in cuz i didnt care about eating too much cuz i needed to eat too much. cuz i needed to gain weight! anyway, it turned into a bad habbit of eating in the middle of the night and now its turned into an addiction. i cant not eat at night no matter how hard i try. im decently happy with my weight. my hormones are coming back (testosterone) and i feel better. i just want to sleep throughout the night without getting up and eating. has anyone else had this problem with getting up at night to eat? like it started cuz my body needed food but now i eat enough during the day and i dont want to gain weight super fast anymore. any suggestions on how to stop the night eating?
Reason: this does not relate to a desire to gain weight; more related to recovery -- moved to the H&S forum
If your body is telling you to eat at night then you're not eating enough during the day.
it was. and that WAS the case. but now my brain is just addicted to eating at night. its become part of my sleep cycle :( even if i binge right before bed i still eat at night and then i feel even worse in the morning
I can guarantee you that if you eat enough during the day/before bed you will not wake up hungry in the middle of the night. You might still wake up, but you won't be hungry.
If I eat over 1,400 calories in a meal there's no way I'm going to be hungry for a good bit afterward.
Otherwise the only way to change it is to wean yourself off. Just don' eat in the middle of the night, even if you wake up hungry.
Night eating-get all your cals packed in by 8 pm--and don't so much as nibble after that time or it will shift into emotional, uncontrolled eating. I've had similar problem and only way to stop it is to: 1) eat tons during breakfast, lunch, dinner, 2) don't eat a thing after dinner---drink tea, coffee--nothing w/ sugar like juice--you'll be surprized that after a week of practicing this restraint, the habit will go away--you just need to retrain your body to pack calories at breakfast/lunch/dinner. Try this and let us know!
i had this too. i was eating in bed a lot. So, i stopped eating in bed at any time so i wouldn't associate my bed with food. it really worked for me.
I can not offer any advice but I can tell you you're not alone in this.. I wake once or twice a night and raid my pantry, even now after reaching a healthy BMI after anorexia...
I didn't mind when I was trying to gain since my body needed it... but now it could seriously do with a full nights sleep. :(
armandounc unfortunatly its not as easy as just not eating. im a full blown addict! i am not hungry when i wake up anymore. i just go and eat. i found a website giving reasons for why the night eating happens. a big one is cuz i eat mos tof my meals in my room so im stopping that. im also doing what krae352129075 suggested and im not eating after 8pm and im going to bed at 10 now.
so i think with not eating in my room, eating enough during the day, and not eating after 8pm, i should be able to ward off thoughts of food and sleep through the night like a normal person.
this whole website is all about night eating. http://nighteating.net/category/stop-night-ea ting/ i recommend anyone (sulfyr) suffering with this to check this out. its a bit helpful. google "night eating" and there are a lot more resources as well
