Hey guys :) i was wondering if theres anyone on here whos recovered from anorexia and now eats without counting cals at all? If so, how long did it take you to get to this place after you started maintaining? i'm trying so hard to eat without counting and then just sometimes estimate at the end of the day but i always end up eating too little :( ugh i think i'm starting to learn how much i need to be eating but i just dont understand how to not count :( any advice anyone?

also, i dont measure anymore and before anorexia i ate a ton whenever i wanted and never gained, but i really dont know how much i was eating because i cant remember :/

do you have any old plan's you wrote at the beginning of ED when you were eating normal? :/

baybeehannahx doesnt count i dont think so ask her :) but a lot of people lose weight when they stop counting so take care xxx

Yeah partyring is right, I try not to count too, if I gain too much or lose though I will have to go back to counting but I think it is important to ttry to normalise your relationship with food and numbers as you recover. I know its hard to remember how much you  ate before, I find that too... How much are you eating now?

baybeehannahx - how do you NOT count? i'd love to stop counting, but i think i would have to get a new brain transplant.. i still look at food and see numbers.. :-(

though ED has improved my head calculating abilities tremendously (lol), i would really LOVE to look at a small apple and see a red fruit instead of 52cal (48 skin off)...

any tips?..

hila- I can say by no means that I have completely stopped counting, I go through phases where I do and think I will never stop, I really think it is a gradual process, it takes a lot of work, you really have to let go and try to trust yourself again... Easier said than done, but it can and will happen if you try!

recovery is such a hard complex work.. no one from the "outside" will ever understand just how difficult it is.

i thank god for being able to share thoughts and feeling with you guys :)

Get a friend to blindfold you and put small quantities of different foods down for you to eat.  Half an apple (or a quarter), a cup of lite custard, maybe some breakfast oats or a yoghurt or whatever.  THEN you will eat and enjoy and savour the flavour and texture and smell FIRST as you won't know what you're picking up without ruining it by worrying about WHAT it is. 

 

It is a good way to learn to not worry - if you eat quarter of an apple (skin on, lol) and you don't die of obesity, it will help.  I'm the opposite, I'm a fat anorexic.  I put on a truck load of weight but still think like an anorexic and therefore sometimes don't eat enough or properly to kick my metabolism.  All I feel is guilt if I eat something and feel a teensy bit full ... I then wish I hadn't.  So I tried eating blind and learned that food wasn't my enemy, I was.

 

I'm on day three now of trying to stick to around 1200cals a day, which is comfortable - I don't feel empty and I don't feel full.  It's a little weird actually making myself have lunch or a slightly bigger dinner of better food but I am really trying hard to turn it into a habit this time. 

 

Perhaps eating food for the enjoyment of it first might help.  You can then eat little bits without feeling guilty and without seeing the cals first.  You can worry about them later and adjust your eating according to what you ATE not what you are about to eat.  Make sense?

baybeehannahx- i stopped counting for a few weeks and lost a few pounds :/ so now i'm trying to sort of count, like i don't measure i estimate, but i try to make sure i'm getting enough, but i know im not:/ like for the past few weeks its turned out i've been eating way to little even though i was eating to my hunger! like i really was! but i don't get that hungry i guess:/ so now i'm trying to get back to what i was eating before but its really hard like before i was eating 2,400ish to maintain and now i've gotten back up to 2,000ish but i'm really trying my best to get back up to 2,300-2,400ish. thats really great that you don't count that much now! lucky:/ 

luckylocket1966- thanks for the suggestions!(: i would try that but for me, i don't think it would work :/ but thanks for the advice.

summerstar you never stop counting I dont think. I know what you mean about seeing numbers in place of foods in front of you. Nitemare. And in restaurants now you have iton the darn menu!!! But i think slowly as you go through recovery you begin to care less. I dont know when and how but try to keep pushing through the uncomfortableness and it just gets easier, when you see nothing bad happens from eating more than your ED head is telling you too. The other thing I do is go to the supermarket with a friend/mum and buy meals based on just what looks nice. It sounds crazy but i stand a few steps back from the aisle so i cant see the calories and then when i get home i throw all the wrappers away/ask mum to do it for me. That way I enjoy the food without obsessing about numbers!

Recovery is worth it , you can do it!
