Kelp is great for the thyroid, it contains lots of iodine which the thyroid needs to produce thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism. But if you have an under active thyroid you should really see your GP for blood tests and be on a drug like levothyroxine. Hope this helps!

I agree about the soy.  I am vegan and I did use soy on occasion over the last year and seven months.  I started having symptoms of low thyroid.  I had a lot of things tested to see what was going on.  My B12 levels were perfect, vitamin D levels good, hemoglobin excellent, but my TSH was way too high.  I decided to get all soy out of my diet and I also had my thyroid meds increased to the next increment.  Getting soy out of the diet is a challenge because it is in so many things, even cooking sprays and herbal teas.  But once I did I just felt so much better.  I was tested again two months later and now my TSH is almost undetectable (too hyper) so my dose was decreased back to the original dose and hopefully it will be more regulated now.  I had this issue before years ago when I started drinking soy milk regularly and it took a while to figure out that was what was inhibiting my medication from working properly. 

Other things that help...if you are already on thyroid meds take your meds at the same time every day, preferably an hour before eating (or on an empty stomach) and four hours away from consuming calcium or cruciferous vegetables.

Exercise regulary as it really helps regulate metabolism.  Make sure it is vigorous enough to get your heart rate up for at least fifteen minutes to half an hour and you get a good intense workout.  Strength training or cardio either one works.  I am not talking about a leisurely walk here.

If you do not consume a lot of salt (which usually has iodine added to it) be sure to include iodine from natural sources such as sea vegetables as a poster above said.  but be careful not to overdue it, a little goes a long way.  Too much iodine can also throw off your thyroid if you are prone to thyroid problems. 

I try to include brazil nuts in my diet but not every day.  They are high in selenium which also helps the thyroid, though again a little goes a long way.  Supplements of selenium are not necessary if you can get it in  your diet.

I don't know of any other off the top of my head.  There isnt a miracle cure or I would have found out about it by now.  :)  I have been dealing with hypothyroidism since I was diagnosed in 1989, 23 years ago.  I had a painful goiter then and had tons of tests and that's how the hypothyroidism was discovered.  People knock the meds but they have helped me function normally all these years.  The periods without them were horrid to say the least.  Unfortunately I also developed osteoporosis fairly young (diagnosed via dexa at the age of 34) and I attribute some of it to long term use of thyroid meds, especially when on too much.  I have to have my levels checked more than most people to make sure I am not on too much as that will excascerbate my osteoporosis.

I have stopped consuming as much soy as I used to.  I've been hypothyroid for quite a few years as well, probably 10 or more years and I'm only 35. The best way to treat it is with the synthetic hormone Levothyroxine.  And my last DEXA was crap as well (osteoporosis).  Though that is in part due to years of ED.

eroth412 i am sorry to hear you have osteoporosis as well.  I too have suffered with an eating disorder for a number of years (triggered by a traumatic unwanted hysterectomy, loss of both ovaries and surgical menopause at the age of 33 seven years ago), but the thyroid problems actually came way sooner, and the dexa scan was done just as I was starting to become sick with my eating disorder but still a low normal weight.  You are the first person I have heard besides myself who has osteoporosis in her thirties and has been on long term thyroid meds.  Have you had any fractures yet?  I have constant pain in my right heel, on the medial (inner) side.  I thought I injured it from running and I went to a doctor who diagnosed achilles tendonitis.  that was over two months ago and it isn't healing at all.  I have to go back and get an mri to make sure it isnt some kind of stress fracture.  It really doesnt seem like achilles tendonitis at all and I get sharp shooting pains if I move it a certain way.  Every time I get a strain I worry that it is a fracture.  I do take hormone replacement due to loss of my ovaries and take calcium and vitamin D (vegan version) supplements.  I am trying to hold off on the osteoporosis drugs but before I became vegan I took a prescribed calcitonin that was a nasal spray.  I just wonder how much of my osteoporosis can be attributed to thyroid meds.

Thanks for the info tina0367, I do appreciate the gesture, but I do not buy into the paleolithic diet (though I do agree that diet plays a huge role in health and disease) and I have a really hard time trusting surgeons of any kind at this point.  Also, I do not see any reference to valid scientific studies on that website that justify his claims.  I do agree that bioidentical hormones are better for the body if one must take them and I do that.  I have also taken bioidentical testosterone replacement for women due to extremely low levels from loss of ovaries.  Thyroid meds, when dosed too high, are known to increase bone density loss.
