Out of curiosity, what happens to the body if you lose too much weight? And what would be considered too much weight loss?

If you lose too much weight you could see a host of health problems beginning with loss of hair, brittle fingernails, headaches and leading up to potential problems with your organs and the possibility of your body breaking down.  Your immune system wont work you will become malnourished and you will lose your muscle mass and lower your metabolism.    

Losing 1% of your body weight per week is safe rate  IF you are not underweight to begin with.

What happens to the body?  The condition is called 'starvation'... it's often fatal.  In terms of size, 'too much weight-loss' varies from individual to individual because appropriate body-weight is linked to frame-size.  In all cases when the BMI drops below 20 that's when problems are most likely to start and when someone should be alert to whether their body is exhibiting signs of stress .. e.g. fatigue, lack of periods, poor complexion, anxiety.   Once the BMI goes below 18.5 then a person is classed as clinically underweight - not healthy. 

There's also the mental side of 'too much weight-loss'... or, to be more accurate, too much obsession about body-weight.  When things go too far.  The numbers don't matter so much as the attitude to food, calorie-counting, self-image, irrational fears.... If someone, for example, could answer 'yes' to two or more of these questions they are quite likely to be suffering from disordered eating behaviour and should see a doctor.

  • Do you make yourself Sick because you feel uncomfortably full?
  • Do you worry that you have lost Control over how much you eat?
  • Have you recently lost more than One stone (14lb/6.5kgs) in a 3 month period?
  • Do you believe yourself to be Fat when others say you are too thin?
  • Would you say that Food dominates your life?

I've been doing it slowly. Nothing drastic....not starving myself. It's pretty much a lifestyle change now. I was just curious. My co-worker insists that our scale is off by 5 lbs which sets me back some so I have no idea when I'm going to be able to switch from losing to maintaining. I was just wondering what would happen if I did somehow lose too much weight.

From looking at your profile, you are 5'2" and 98 pounds.  Or that was what the scales at your work said, but since someone told they were off you're going to try to lose 5 more pounds???

Sounds to me like you are waaayyy too hung up on the numbers.  I also see that you have 3 kids, so you're not some teenager, but that doesn't mean you don't have some possible issues. 

You had another post that said you were 103 pounds with a BMI of 18.7 and that you were happy with that.  Losing 5 more pounds is not going to magically make your life better (or make any difference except possibly negatevely to your health. 

Yeah for some stupid reason that number is a big deal to me.

Then give up the scales!!!

If you need to be sure you aren't gaining, take your measurements, or make sure your favorite jeans fit.  You don't need the scales to be happy, and obviously they don't make you happy so get away from them girl. 

Don't let the number control your feelings of worth, or your life. 

Obviously you are at the low end of healthy weight wise, so if you srean't heppy with your body, try reshaping it by lifting some weights or getting in some exercise. There are a lot of slim, fit girls int he fitness forum that are giving themselves the shapes they want without losing weight.

I'm going to work on it.

I exercise every day including lifting weights, dance, and cardio. I just lowered my cal intake and exercised more to get to where I'm at. I'm gonna have to avoid that scale for awhile.
