Question about boyfriend's calories
Hi there everyone,
I discovered this website by mistake, but I am worried about my boyfriend who exercises a lot and, although he eats a ton of food, it all seems like it's nothing (for example, veggies, fruits, chicken, turkey). I don't want him to get any skinnier. I have tried finding out about how many calories he should eat and have gotten estimates from 1680 to 4000, and I don't want to send him into the hospital for a stomach pump (4000 seems like a lot) so I am here to ask for help because I myself have no idea lol.
The website here asked for his stats, so- he is 5'9, 25 years old, and 145ish pounds. He works out on an exercise bike (Schwinn Airdyne evolution) for 80-90 minutes daily. The log says he goes at 225- 250 watts on the bike, and about 12.5 MET's to 14 MET's, burning 1350 calories. It also says he spins about 21-22 miles an hour on it, or about 28-32 in 80-90 minutes a day. He and I also walk 2-4 miles a night pretty fast (I can barely keep up). My question, then, is how to figure out how much he should eat? The site starts him out at 2000, so do I just add vigorous stationary biking and walking to the log to get ~3200 calories a day? Does that sound about right?
Thanks and sorry to ramble on!
Have you ever approached him about your worries? Even if you find out the right number of calories he needs... he still has to be the one to maintain/nurture/take care of his body!
Yes, believe me, I just don't want him to starve and I admit that I myself am a novice at all this too. I just want to make sure he's eating enough.
Totally, and your concern comes from a good place. I just think you should perhaps have a calm open discussion with him about it. Don't accuse him, just maybe ask how he's been feeling in that department, and maybe suggest a doctor's appointment?

Thank you for the information. Yeah I admit that I am clueless on all this. I know that he gets bored and says that exercise calms him, but he goes really hardcore on that bike. I guess neither of us know what is "normal", but I think that doing that amount daily is somewhat excessive maybe?? Do you know if the amounts on this site are accurate because 3000-3500 is what it suggests, and if I purposely make him gain weight I'm terrified he'll get mad. He tells me he knows he's getting the FDA'S recommendation of 2000 but does that make you for sure not lose weight even if you do a marathon daily? I don't know a lot about this stuff haha.
Thanks!
At 5"9" and 145 lbs he is at a very healthy weight (BMI 21.4). 3000 ish would be a good target for him to maintain. Is he trying to lose weight or your are just afraid that he will?

Okay, thank you so much for that info. I just honestly want to make sure he is eating enough food. Ultimately, too, I think he and I just want him to maintain where he is right now. Is 80-90 minutes of hardcore stationary bicycling and walking 2-4 miles normal? My God, I have to jog at his walking pace lol.
Yeah, eating at least 3000 is perfect. It sounds like hes living a healthier life style than most people. Some people need to eat 7000+ a day, there are no worries about the stomach being pumped lol.

Thank you. I had a doctor appointment today and I asked her, for my boyfriend's sake, what she thought about his exercise and diet. She told me to recommend to him to either calm it down a lot or eat 3500-4000 calories daily for that exercise intensity! I guess I'm going to have to make sure he starts eating "real" food because the chicken, turkey, veggies and fruits can't be getting near that lol.
