The urge to eat when not hungry/emotional eating?

Quote  |  Reply

Hello!

Lately I've had some issues with wanting to either eat or continue eating after I've reached the point of being comfortably full. I'm eating enough to maintain my weight and fairly sure I'm drinking enough water...

so I'm curious as to whether or not anyone has some tips for how to beat the cravings.

What I try to do is drink a glass of water, or some tea. Maybe you could go for a walk or work out a little until you realize you don't need more food. If none of that works, just drink tons of water until you're so full you couldn't eat extra food even if you wanted to :)

What type of foods are you eating?  I find when I eat more protein and healthy fats, I am more satisfied with my meal and less likely to want more.  If I eat more sugar/carbs/processed foods I want more.  If it's boredom, try to find something to occupy yourself instead, drink water, chew gum, etc.  How many cals are you eating?  Some people maintain on fewer cals than they should be.

Have the same problem. A week ago I had a Ct scan on my abdomen because my doctor was worried about all the air in my intestines. Turned out to be nothing ($6k worth of nothing), but from there I really started to pay attention to the fullness I feel throughout the day. My stomach was being abused by over stuffing, so much so that my doctor noticed a concern. I recommend really learning what hunger feels like. Not starving, but really listening to your body on what it needs (not your head).

Since then, I feel full most of the day, and have reduced eating during the day by 300 calories. I noticed that if I eat little during the day (sedentary job), my body gets use to not feeling full...which is great because I stop eating during dinner time sooner.

After dinner, distract yourself: Take a walk/drive/brush your teeth/do some art/crafts/talk to a friend/go shopping/meditate...don't give in.

Not All Processed Foods Are Created Equal
Fact: a diet containing whole, fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best for a healthy mind and body. Although true, it can be hard to keep food fresh at home for longer periods of time, and if you have no time to shop every few days, boxed and canned foods become appealing. We often hear about heavily processed frozen dinners and processed foods worth avoiding, but there are minimally processed foods that do pack a lot of nutrition and may be worth having in the fridge or cupboard.
