Does anyone else do this?
I absolutely refuse to buy new clothes until I'm at or within 10-15lbs of my goal weight. I LOVE clothes shopping, and I do miss it terribly, but I absolutely refuse to spend my hard earned money on my fat self, especially when I know I won't fit into the clothes in a few months.
Is anyone else like this?
Eventually, I couldn't continue to wear my old work clothes as they were just too baggy. I had to buy things I could wear right then.
I still bought things to wear in the future, but I was forced to update my wardrobe.
The stuff I bought the weekend after Christmas was loose 6 weeks later, and now are so baggy I can't wear them any more.
I couldn't have done that. I started with a 42" waist in pants, now I'm down to 34" (and almost to 32"). In shirts it's from XL down to M. If I refused to replace my "fat" clothes until I'd slimmed down I'd have been swimming in them.
I haven't spent a lot on the intermediate sizes, though. I've gone as cheaply... er, as frugally as I can, and buy just enough of everything to get by.

Exactly. I swam in them as long as I could, realistically, but a belt and tucking in a shirt can only do so much.
I started at 48", am currently wearing 38", and have bought 36" that fit. $8 pants from Walmart FTW.
Yea I know what you mean I love shopping as well and I hate going to the mall and seeing all that cute clothes I just want to get but dont because I would rather wait until the weight comes off so that I feel like I look good in that clothes , so yea it sux but I would but I would rather get it when I feel confident that I look good in it.
For me, this attitude is harmful. I see it as a form of punishing myself because I'm not at my goal yet, when really I should be rewarding myself for losing at all! I don't think it's wrong to allow myself clothes that fit and look good to celebrate my successes. It is true, I try to buy more things on sale because I know they won't fit me for long. But I have bought new things all along the way. I am saving my big investments though for my goal weight (leather jacket, high-quality suit, expensive jeans, and high-quality winter coat to name a few).
Ugg, im so stuck on this... Right now, all my clothes are pretty much to big, and intern i think i look gawd awful in them! and just fatter then i am!! Ive only lost 10 lbs on this program, but i lost 15 prior to that... I really really want to drop at least another size before i buy new clothes... and even then, ill buy minimum requierments! lol Summer is coming, and thankfully Skirts still look ok even in a bigger size.. lol
Im hoping by the end of summer, i can go shopping for new great clothes and feel GOOD about it!
I know what you mean! I badly need to update my wardrobe but am also hoping to slim down for summer. I tend to go thrift shopping a lot so it's not expensive to buy a few things here and there when I need them (25c table ftw!!) but there are some bigger-ticket things that I'm waiting for.
I did something close, but worse last summer. I gave all my old clothes away to give me motivation to lose weight if I ever gained any. It helped because I'm so uncomfortable in my clothing after a winter of drinking and fourth meals (college
) that I'm dead set on getting back to skinnier me. I also have a habit of buying jeans that are a size too small so that I can put them on and not want to eat much the whole day. Sure, I look terrible until I'm the size I want to be, but I don't binge because I'm terrified of the button flying off my pants... ![]()
To all of those who want their clothes to fit but do not want to buy new ones - find a friend who sews or hire a seamstress and have some of your current clothes taken in.
You will look and feel better in clothes that fit well, it will not be as expensive as a new wardrobe and you extend the life of what you have.

But there's also the very realistic point of view that it's wasting money. I bought 6 shirts and 4 pairs of pants on December 27th, and 3 months later they have to go in the donate pile. They hardly look worn - I'd consider exchanging them by saying I got them as gifts if I had less scruples.
I would have loved to have been able to last a few more weeks with what I had at the time, but I couldn't continue to wear those circus tents and MC Hammer pants.
Now that I can buy off the rack at K-Mart, Wal-mart, etc, I'm much more willing to buy something I'll be too small for 3 months from now. It's the difference of paying $8-$12 for a shirt there and $30-$50 at a place like Casual Male.
Gonna stick with my clothes (pants) as much as possible with my belt until the belt says otherwise.
I understand not wanting to waste your money! At first I felt the same way - I wanted to wait till I reached my GW to buy new clothes. But I realized that first of all I was completely drowning in my clothes and it was very unflattering to my new figure. Secondly - if I've been putting in lots of hard work and had lost weight - even if I hadn't made it to my GW yet - I wanted to show off my new body! Be proud when you've lost a fourth or half of your total weight loss goals, buy some new clothes, and show it off and you'll receive tons of compliments. And better yet - the compliments you'll get when you wear new clothes will help you be motivated to stay on track.
Make sure that every time you loose a size that you buy new gym/workout clothes - there is no better way to ruin a good workout if you are holding up your sweat pants with one hand the whole time!
Another trick I've done is I bought a leather belt - size xxl when I started CC. Instead of buying new belts I just drilled new holes in it and was able to cut off the extra length without it being noticeable. Now I'm down to a size Medium and still wear the same belt! I also had to get my watch re-sized, lost several ring sizes, and shrunk 1/2 size in shoes. Those are all important things that I wanted to get resized and not wait around for - especially having the right fitting shoes to continue working out in.
Be proud and show off you work!
