How about a group for women in their 40's

Quote  |  Reply

Well I see groups for 20, 30 and 50 somethings. I would like to join up with other active women in their 40's who have around 30 lbs to lose.

I am 5'8"

171 lbs

42 yrs

I am quite active- hiking, biking and running, but have been neglectful in counting my calories and need to watch portion control. I am vegetarian and eat quite healthfully, but need to cut back on not so healthy foods if I am to lose the 25-30 lbs I would like to. Is there any interest in starting a small support group for exercise and weight loss? My goal weight is 140 lbs and I think that Christmas time is a realistic date.

Hi, I would like to join your group.  I am 43 and started at 227 back in Jan.  I am currently at 170 and want to get to 140-145 by Jan of this year.  I usually work out at home 4-5 times per week with workout videos.  I am around 5'5".  I also belong to a group on BBC that has helped me a lot.

Hello Tina.

Wow, 57 lbs! Good for you. I have lost a mere 10 since January, but have not been watching what I eat. I just started running again in March so that has helped somewhat. I don't really do workout videos at all, but may try the P90X. Today was actually the first time logging my food in a long time, so I feel like I am back on track.

I belong to a group called 40-somethings

But if you start a new one (or an all-girl one), please count me in!

I'm 5'3" and will be 46 this Oct.

hey kona, just wanted to let you know that i was where you are. i'm 5'8" and at 37 i weighed 168. my weight loss was quite slow, but by my 39th birthday i was down to the 139-142 range. i stayed in the low 140s for about two years, and now--at 42--i've been in the lower half of the 130s (with a few slips into the 135 range) for over a year.

trust me, it can be done!

Hi curvy kitten,

Oops, I must have missed that group. Or perhaps it's been around for awhile, and didn't show up on the recent forums. At any rate, you are welcome to join Tina and I, and any others who wish to join us. Maybe we can do some weekly weigh ins, or just share ideas about what works. I don't have any set plans, I just thought some more specific support from people in similar situations-weight wise- would be helpful.

Pgeorgian- Wow good for you. That is inspirational! Do you still log your food regularly or do you find that you can just estimate now?

thanks! no, i don't log anymore. i can estimate to within 100 when i feel like i need to. for me, mostly it's about staying active and keeping the alcohol intake down.

i've been running pretty consistently since october '09, and now i can maintain on 1800-2000 calories/day, so it's not hard to stay within my safe range :)

I just ordered the workout series "Chalean Extreme" from Beach Body and am looking forward to getting started to see how much more I can get into shape.  Currently I do Turbo Jam and The Firm with weights.  Does anyone have a preference day for weigh in's?  On BBC we do it on Friday, which I think is nice so if we wanted to do something extra on the weekend, it wouldn't mess us up too much, LOL

pgeorgian- my biggest challenge is maintainence.  I have lost the extra weight 3 times before in my adult life but between job changes, getting married and having 4 kids, always put it back on!  You will have to share your secrets with me :)  This time I am determined to keep it off for good!

kona- if you try P90X let me know what you think.  Making a daily thing out of logging my food and planning my meals helps keep me on track.  I would like to get to the point I don't have to do it anymore but for now it helps keep me motivated :)

I'd love to join you.   Smile

Super. Fridays for weigh-ins sounds good to me.

Room for 1 more!? I have been looking for a group that is perfect for me!

I am restarting after sadly losing and gaining back this EXACT SAME 20 pounds 4 times! I AM DONE! This is it!

Looking for real life changes here! Not fast weight loss only to go right back!

Once I lose the weight I am getting a tattoo. Perhaps some midlife crisis gesture. :)

Friday weigh in it is! Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

I have a 7-3 desk job. I have committed to working out 5-6 days per week. Did Turbo Jam this morning and realized how much I missed it!

What does everyone else do to workout and how do you keep it interesting?

Welcome carie8 :)

I have lost and gained the same 45-80 lbs three times already.  I'm with you, this is it!!  Totally making this my new lifestyle.  I also found out last spring that due to my high cholesterol, I am starting to get plaque in my coronary arteries so this is as much for health as anything.  I am really working hard to get my numbers down so I can stay off medication.  I will have my blood work rechecked in Jan.

I use Turbo Jam and The Firm with weights.  I just ordered Chalean Extreme so will let you know how it goes.  I work 3 days a week and it's hard to find time to work out on those days with the kids.  I am just not an early morning exerciser.  I would have to get up around 4:30-5 AM to get done before getting ready and getting to work by 8 so I try to make the most of my days off and get in at least 4 a week, sometimes 5.

Hello Carie8, welcome,

I'm a teacher so I have the summer off and therefor lots of time to exercise. I like to do sports- running, biking, hiking, skiing-downhill and criss cross in winter. I have Wii Fit and the other one (shows how much I use it) but I prefer to be outside. During the school year and now, I run with a buddy at 6:00 am 4 times a week and walk a lot. I love being active. For me it's my eating that's the issue. Because I am active I figured I could eat whatever and whenever I wanted, and apparently that is not the case. I've been logging my meals on here for a couple of years and then figure I can go it alone and run into trouble so I am back at it. I like this group idea, I think I feel more accountable already. My name is Kim for the record. My dog is Kona and that id was available on CC.

Tina- I may have to rethink the video idea especially for winter months. My partner is loving P90X so I will let you know if and when I try it. Good for you for being proactive about your health! Well I guess that is what we are all doing heh? Good for us then.

Curvy kitten- do Friday weigh-ins work for you?

Kara- I wish there were more outdoor recreation things to do close to where I live but I am kind of in the middle of nowhere South Dakota plus with 4 kids ages 14 months to 9 years, it is pretty tough to go do anything.  That is another reason I like the videos, I can exercise at home and still be there for my kids.  My husband is self employed and works long hours.  He is in and out during the day but I have most of the responsibility for the kids, especially during school, which starts here the 23rd of Aug.  I have a Wii but not the Fit package.  From what I was hearing, it really isn't a tough enough workout for someone who has been working out for awhile and in better shape.  Not that I don't have a ways to go but I am at a point in my weight loss where I really want to push the physical fitness part of it more.  My favorite activity:  curling up with a good book! LOL

Tina~

I live in an outdoor recreation mecca. With 4 kids of that age range you must get plenty of exercise just parenting. I suspect that the Wii is fairly low key. I got it as something to do when my hips were too injured to run. I don't have loads of upper body strength though, so I think that some of the rows and curls would still be a good place for me to start. Too bad reading doesn't burn more calories! Have a great day.

Kara- That would be nice!  LOL  I feel I don't have much upper body strength either although I am trying to improve.  I still can't do pushups on my toes :(  I am still doing girlie ones on my knees after 7 months of working out, LOL

You have a great day too :)

Hi Everyone, I was thinking the same things about the 20s, 30s and 50s groups.  I'm glad you're starting a 40s group and I hope I can still join in.

I'm Bonnie, I'm 48 and my stats are:

I lost most of my weight almost 3 years ago and I've kept it off except for a pesky 5 pounds which keeps on finding me LOL. I've been frustrated that I don't have more control over my eating/emotional state.  When I found this website I figured it was perfect for me to gain control and lose 20.  I'm still in the overweight category although I work out a lot and I feel like if I take my measurements, it will probably reduce my BMI.  But I don't know.

I work a desk job and I exercise at the gym most nights of the week.  I also like to run.  Right now I'm not feeling very motivated so I'm looking for some different things to do to keep my interest in exercise. Its so dang hot here that I find it hard to run outside right now and I hate the treadmill.  Any suggestions that don't cost too much would be really appreciated from the group.

Welcome Bonnie :)  Not sure I have any good ideas.  I do my workouts at home with DVD's.  Just works for my location and schedule.  I just ordered Chalean Extreme from Beachbody and looking forward to getting started.  Right now I do Turbo Jam and The Firm with weights.

Hi Bonnie, Welcome.

I'm not sure that I have any especially good ideas, but if I think of some, I will definitely share them. I run at 6:00 am when it's hot. Is that possible where you are? I guess I don't feel like I can offer a lot of advice to someone who has lost 50 ish lbs. Good for you! I'm looking forward to the weigh in tomorrow. Maybe that will be enough to help encourage you for the last little bit.

Don't forget to weigh in today :)
