How about a group for women in their 40's

Quote  |  Reply

Well I see groups for 20, 30 and 50 somethings. I would like to join up with other active women in their 40's who have around 30 lbs to lose.

I am 5'8"

171 lbs

42 yrs

I am quite active- hiking, biking and running, but have been neglectful in counting my calories and need to watch portion control. I am vegetarian and eat quite healthfully, but need to cut back on not so healthy foods if I am to lose the 25-30 lbs I would like to. Is there any interest in starting a small support group for exercise and weight loss? My goal weight is 140 lbs and I think that Christmas time is a realistic date.

Wow, quiet weekend then everyone posted!

kar94- that is funny!  How old is your daughter?  I have 4 kids, Son 10, daughter 9, son 4 and son 2.  Our field trip was good, visit to the fossil beds in NE then feeding the fish at a fish growing site then a tour of McDonalds, LOL I had PF several years ago, I took high doses of anti-inflamatories for about a month with stretching exercises and it finally went away and has not come back.  It is very painful :(

Welcome to all the new members.  Really don't have a lot of time to comment right now.  My older two kids have their elementary track meet this morning so I am sneaking off from work for a couple of hours to watch.

Rachel- hate TTOM :(  Hope your energy is back.

Kara- glad you had a good ride :)  I'm not sure my body could do that, LOL

Work today then call tonight.  Planning to hit the weights after work, time permitting.

Have a great day everyone!

Tina, hope the track meet went well.  Not so sure about the McDonald's tour.  Seems like anyone with kids is going to have to visit or fundraise or feed kids McDs.  Wow. The fossil bed tour sounds like it was interesting.  There are some Dino tracks in Colorado too.  A place in SE CO called Picket Wire Canyon.  Went a couple of years ago and it was really fascinating. Long day though, 7 mile hike in and then back out so total of 14 miles.

FYI all: There's been a dog food recall for Salmonella.  This can affect people and pets.  Really miserable if you get infected.

Ann- thanks for the link.  Doesn't look like my brand is listed, thank goodness!  The track meet went well.  I think they each got first in 2-3 events but the official results won't be out until tomorrow. Of course the competition wasn't too fierce, LOL It was a nice morning to be out and fun to watch.  :)  For the field trip we packed our lunches then got a small ice cream at McD's after the tour so not too bad.  I should ask my daughter what she thought of the tour.  I think their favorite part was feeding the fish, LOL  The fossils here are all mammalls.  Prehistoric camels, rhinos, horses, bone crushing dogs, etc and some birds and turtles.  What is unique about it is the number of intact skeletons they have found, over 200 in all.  It happed in/near a water hole after a volcano in Idaho errupted and dropped 1.5-2 feet of ash on the area.  Did you know that volcanic ash is actually glass?

Feeling guilty today because I haven't been for a walk with Toby(our Golden).  The kids got out of school early today and then I landed up watching my neighbors 2 kids while she went to do errands.  That walk is usually my roughly 200 calories I burn exercise wise daily.  Heel bugging me a bit more than usual today and I hate taking anti-inflam too much.  A co worker went into total kidney failure and then landed up with some rare cancer after years of taking ibuprophen.

Tina, my daughters are 14, 9 (10 on the 29th) and 7.  My 9 year old when to Strawberry Banke here in NH with her school the other day where they get to see how people lived back in the 1700's.  My oldest is graduating middle school and starts high school in the fall.  She got to go visit the h.s. today and came home all excited.  I can't believe she's already going to h.s..  :(

Good morning :)  Another good day starting -- workout is done, breakfast is done, lunch & water are chilling in the fridge, dinner is planned.  Feeling pretty good this week :)

DS is off on a school trip to Chicago today.  His class is going up there (4 hour bus ride), they'll do lots of sight seeing and educational stuff (museums, etc), then they'll check into a hotel, go to a medieval type place for dinner (jousting and eating doesn't sound like they mix, you know?), then head back to the hotel to sleep.  Tomorrow is another fun filled day, and they'll be back tomorrow night.  I hope they have a blast!  My DD went last year so I'm sure he'll come home all excited :)

Karen, I have a 13 year old daughter who will be in 8th grade next year -- just one year behind your oldest.  Then I have 2 boys, ages 12 and 9 (6th grade & 3rd grade).  Do you live in NH?  I have a brother that lives in the Concord area.  Yikes on that co-worker that went into kidney failure -- was it just the ibuprofen that caused that?  I take that daily for my heel.  Maybe it's time to wean off.

Tina, yay for your kids doing so well at the track meet!  Very cool about all those fossils and intact skeletons found.  I had heard that Idaho had a volcano a long time ago -- and I think Wisconsin or someplace near there was hit by a huge meteor ages ago too.  It's amazing how they figure this stuff out!

Ann, thanks for that link.  Our brand wasn't on the list either, whew!  How is the wilderness training going?

Kara, Sonya -- hello!

Rachel

Feeling much better today.  Haven't been hungry so I've only had a banana and a few turkey pepperoni slices, weird combo now that I look at it. LOL.  Went out this morning and finally got some Dr. Scholl's for my heel and they feel really good so hoping it helps.  With that being said I just got home from a 1 hour walk with Toby.  Its really nice out today if you don't count the big puffy dark clouds blowing around.  All the better for walking since its in the low 60's today.  Off to go make myself some lunch now and plan dinner.  I hate when I have to leave the grocery shopping to hubby.  When I do it I plan the weeks dinners and then go grocery shopping to make sure i have everything I'll need.  I've been working so much on the weekends though that he's been doing the shopping.  I'm thinking I'm gonna have to somehow switch grocery day to my weekdays off.  Today is my last day off work till next Thursday :(  which also means I have to work Mothers Day 7-1.  At least I'll be able to have dinner with my family and my parents are going out to dinner with us too.  The scale is tipping in the right direction this week so I'll need to be good and not go overboard.

Happy Mothers day everyone if I don't manage to get back here before Sunday.

Karen

Sorry I haven't posted all week, been busy.   I found a new diet book at the libary I am going to try for 2 weeks.  The "Flat Belly Diet"  family cookbook. It has a 14 day meal plan in it that sounds pretty good. You eat a lot of healthy stuff, including "good" fats, and no junk, but no food categories are cut out completely and the diet is 1600 cal a day which works for me.

Daughter's graduation went well but LONG! It took like 3 hours to read all the list of graduates off for the entire year, don't know why they didn't split this up.  Thanks everyone:)

Have not weight myself but had a bad diet weekend, went to Outback steak house and had a complete meal with appetizer and dessert, plus drank wine on Sunday, so I  cheated again.  Then we went to visit the inlaws at the beach and I just found out some tourist got her leg bitten off by a shark at that same beach just a few days after we were swimming there, yikes!  This is the second shark attack there we barely avoided. Some years ago a surfer got killed while we were there.  It makes me think i don't want to go swimming at that beach anymore.  Would you?

Hope everyone is well and welcome to the new ladies on here:)

Sonya

Karen- what is your job?  I have call on the weekends/holidays, etc sometimes so I don't always get to celebrate in the usual way but we make it work.  They do grow up so fast!  My oldest boy will be in 5th grade next year and 11 in June.  My daughter will be 10 on the 18th of May.  Somehow all my kids ended up with summer b-days.  That with mine and hubby's being in June/July, and anniversary in June, makes for a very busy summer!  I'm glad your heel is feeling better.  I don't think you should worry about the ibuprofen as long as you aren't taking massive doses for months and months but never hurts to be cautious.  I think I was taking 800 mg twice a day for about a month and that got rid of my PF completely and it's never come back.  That was over 15 years ago.  Since I am getting old, I am careful not to push myself too hard and if something hurts, I pay attention.  The last thing I need is a kink in my routine because of an injury!

Rachel- sounds like you are having a great week, keep it up!  Your son's Chicago trip sounds like great fun.  Don't you wish you could go?  LOL

Sonya- that is scary!!  I don't think I would go swimming there :(  Don't you just hate those long, drug out graduations, ugh :(  At least it's over with, LOL

I ate way too many sweets yest and skipped my workout but got in a good one this morning, weights and some sprints on the treadmill,  and doing well on sticking to healthy foods today.  I went to my daughter's science fair this afternoon then headed home with the kids to get their cakes baked for the party on Sat.  My oven didn't heat to temp on the first one but I reset it and managed to salvage it.  The 2nd one seemed to bake fine.  I really hope my oven isn't having issues :(  This happened once before about a year ago when I was cooking fish.

Hello to everyone else :)

Don't forget weigh in today!

BW:  227

LW:  142

CW:  141  -1  kind bouncing around the past couple of weeks

GW:  135-140

Windy, cold and rainy today.  Hope it's better for tomorrow's b-day party!  Pretty much got everything planned, just need to pick up supplies.  Doing well today so far on food and water.  My thighs/butt are soooo sore after my workout yest.  Not sure if it was the sprints or Bulgarian split squats! Surprised

Congrats Tina, you are doing great!  1 lb away from your goal.  Hope the weather cooperates, not that I'm an expert, but wound up kids, cake and ice-cream combo sounds to me like a disaster waiting to happen if they are all inside.

Hi all, will post more later.  I got about 4 hours of sleep last night so am trying not to sit down too long at any one stretch :D

Ann- I was so tired after the party I laid down and took a nap, LOL  Why was your night so short?

The party went well considering.  The weather was perfect, about 65 degrees, sunshine, no real wind.  They kids played their games then had a water fight with balloons and squirt guns.  A couple of kids got hit pretty hard with balloons so they weren't too happy.  Hopefully they will still be friends on Monday!  Almost all the cake got eaten and I left the ice cream at mom's ;)  I did have some cake and a couple bites of ice cream.  I really need to get back off the sugar.  I have had way too much this week and it's so addicting :(    3 younger kids went with grandma so just oldest son and I at home tonight.  Going to watch a movie.

Happy Mother's day everyone!!!

Happy belated Mothers day to all mothers on here:)

Tina, congrats on just about reaching your goal, wow, way to go!!  What will you do when you get there?

I just finished our work fitness challege triathalon, took me 48 minutes to run 2 miles, row 2000m and do 50 floors of stairs.  Not great, not terrible, when I tried it last week it took me an hour...lol

Love the new diet, all stuff I love to eat, but we'll see if I measure the quantities good enough to not go over on calories and keep losing weight

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Sonya

Sonya- great job on your fitness challenge, that's awesome :)   Glad your new eating plan is going well, always makes it easier to stick to when you enjoy it. At the rate I am going it will take me another 6 months to reach my goal!  At this point I am kind of working on body composition so not as obsessed with the scale.  If I can see that I am losing inches, I'll be happy. :)  I am back up a bit after the weekend and my nephew's graduation is next weekend so I'll be gone for 5 days and out of my routine, not usually a good thing for my weight.  I'll do the best I can but no promises ;)

I ended up cooking lunch for the family for mother's day.  MIL brought the kids back about 1 PM and hubby and oldest son were away working all day. They did bring me a flowering plant so that was nice.  I did do weights yest and a 45 min cardio DVD this AM but I must say it was not my best workout.  Just was not feeling it and everything just hurt today.  But I figured something was better than nothing so slogged my way thru, LOL

Hope you all are doing well.  Had a very busy weekend and am still trying to catch up.  Food is going well, water is flowing, exercise is not.  Going to try to get a run in tonight.

Happy Belated Mother's Day to everyone that's a Mom :)  Hope you all had a nice weekend!  Come on back and chat, everyone!!!

Rachel

Morning all!

Well, the scale has bounced up 3 lbs this week, argh :(  I know I didn't overeat by 10,000 cals so sticking to the plan and we'll see what happens in the next few days.  I did have a high sodium day on Sunday.  Working today and call tonight.  My kids get out of school at noon today.  Really need to mow the grass this evening and I am planning some weights after work.  Really need to get that session in since it's the last time I'll probably be able to do weights until the middle of next week so no wimping!!  LOL

Rachel- hope you find time/energy for your run tonight :)

Happy belated Mothers day to you all.

Tina, sounds like it was a nice mother's day for you.  Congrats on reaching your goal too!  You are doing great.

Sonya, nice work on the fitness challenge!  Great time for all of that, you were moving hard.

Rachel, sounds like you are doing alright.  Hope you get in that run.

I wasn't getting too much exercise over the weekend.  Saturday we had the last lecture, test and scenarios for the Basic Wilderness First Aid.  Good stuff.  Sunday I went to a great brunch for mother's day with extended family.  Managed to make some good choices, which wasn't easy considering the spread.  Yesterday finally made myself get out and go for a walk/run to the gate.  I pulled something in my heel.  I stretched some and then went for a long walk today, on not so steep stuff.  Did okay, but have it iced a the moment.  Hope I didn't do anything too bad to it.  Kind of feels like I strained a muscle or tendon.  Weird. Oh well, that's what make ice and Aleve so very nice.  I think I can keep walking until it heals up.  (har, har)

I've been on and off with the scale.  I think I was still 153 on Sunday.  Same stuff, not too exciting.

Cheers,

Ann

Good morning :)

Last night:  1 mile run, 1 mile walk (yay!!!)

Today:  rode my bike to work (3 miles, one way, 6 miles round trip)

Tonight:  planning another run/walk!

Feeling better about the week now :)  Sure wasn't starting out so well but things are turning around.  Also, remember last summer when I did the "75 Days of Summer" project with my kids?  We have decided to do that again, but we are tackling health this year.  Instead of just eliminating HFCS, artificial colorings and flavorings, chemicals, etc, (we are still eating that way, btw!), we are going to focus on 4 key things:  eating right (as listed above, including lots of fruits & veggies), drinking a minimum of 60 ounces of water a day (I drink 100 oz myself, but for the kids, for whom water is an afterthought, I thought this was an easier number to achieve -- that's 3 bottles a day, one at each meal), getting in exercise either formally by working out or informally by "play", and limiting TV/computer/electronic time.  I was watching an HBO special about childhood obesity and diabetes and realized that it is up to ME as my kids' parent to teach them better.  They were surprisingly receptive!  It really helped that my daughter, who is only 13, is almost the same weight as I am, and really wants to lose weight.

We are going to do an amateur health analysis (blood pressure, resting heart rate, recovery heart rate, height, weight, body measurements, etc) when we begin, then again at the end of 75 days.  I'm eager to see their results, but it should help keep me on track too!

Anyway, hope you all are well?  Ann, did you recover from that 4-hour of sleep night?  Sonya, great job on that fitness challenge!  Tina, did you have a nice Mother's Day?  Everyone else lurking and not posting -- jump in!!!

Rachel

Rachel, yay for you!  Glad you are feeling better.  Tough to pull out of that some days.  I love the "75 days of summer challenge".  What a great idea.  I need to up the veggies in my diet too.

Getting my usual 6.5 hours now.  Kind of funny, that seems to work.  (Along with lots of coffee)

Planning on a walk/hike today, won't be able to run till my heel gets better.  It's actually doing pretty good today already!  Got some inserts for my shoes that should help.  Just have to see how that goes today.

I have to get out in my yard!  It is going crazy.  Garden is way behind too.

Back down to 151 this morning, so that's good.

Okay, off to tackle the day. Catch you all later.

Ann

Rachel- I think that's an awesome idea!  I want to do more with my kids this summer too so we are "unplugging" at home.  No computer, iPods, video games, etc for the kids.  I'm not giving mine up completely but I will be cutting back.  We are going to do more family stuff together, including exercise, cooking, etc.  My boys are basically thin but my daughter is almost 10 and weighs around 105-110.  She is quite tall for her age but you can tell she is heavier than she should be so I am concerned about her growing up and being overweight.  I really want to get healthy habits established now.  Great job on the exercise :)  I ended up cooking lunch for everyone on mother's day but the kids and MIL brought me a really pretty hanging flower basket so that was awesome.

Ann- yay for the scale being back down!  I'm glad your heel isn't holding you back too much and feels better.  I mowed last night but need to weed flower beds but will not have time until after our trip.

I did get my workout done last night.  Got called back to work 1/2 way into my warmup but went back and finished after I was done at work.  Then ODS and I mowed the yard.  He really needs to work on it, he tends to slop thru things :( I am working today but home tonight.  We leave Fri morning for my nephew's graduation so I need to start getting stuff packed and laundry caught up.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
