Ok, this is the first time I actually open a new topic =)

I started working out and drinking a bunch of water (a gallon a day) like a month ago,  and even if I am loosing weight ;) I want to know if I am retaining water.

Does anyone know? :)

You usually feel it. When you feel bloated and clothes fit a little tighter than they did yesterday, than you're probably retaining water.

OR...

If you check your weight every day (Which you shouldn't, but many do) and you see a 1 or 2 lb. sudden increase from the day before, almost certainly retained water.
water retention is something I have to watch very carefully for medical reasons.  There are several indicators.  One is a sudden (overnight) weight gain of 2 to 5 pounds.  Another is unusually elevated blood pressure, but you'd have to have a cuff like I do and take it every morning and evening and chart it.  Then there is swelling of the feet, ankles and hands.  When pressed with the fingers the mark stays for a while.

There are also many causes for water retention.  I have congestive heart failure due to a congenital heart defect.  It can be caused by high blood pressure, cardio vascular disease and also menstruation and pregnancy.

If any of these things happen you need to look at your sodium intake.  Also, to know for sure you should consult your doctor.
Thank you so much for your reply.. I;n glad now b/c I don't have of the symptoms. =) YES!!
A sure fire way for me to know I'm retaining water, is my wedding ring suddenly gets very tight, and won't turn.
Hi there...

It's molly. Working for health and weight loss and also a nurse.  Water retention happens when you have kidney issues....heart problems...before your period.  You would notice swelling in your ankles, face, hands.  Unless you have medical issues or eat excessive amounts of salty foods...fluid retention is most likely not your issue.  If you started working out and turning fat to muscle then you may see an increase in weight before a drop because muscle is heavier.  Also, your clothes can actually get tighter before they get looser.  If you are drinking plain water...YIPEE...make sure you are not drinking that volume of artificially sweetened water which defeats your purpose.  Artificial sweeteners actually make what is called xeno estrogens...new estrogens and contribute to fluid and weight gain.   Hope this helps and hang in there....molly
hey molly, that's good info... someone else recently posted a question about why her workout clothes are feeling snug, could be you just answered her question!
meljo .... lol that was me... her daughter :)
I hadn't spoken to her in a few days and she wasn't on here....so I had to ask around.....lol
Thank you Molly,

I wasn't sure what caused water retention so I wanted to make sure. I am drinking lots of water (regular water ) lol

=)
Hi everyone,

I am going to the doctor tomorrow to see if I'm retaining water and I'm kinda scared. Everyone says I look swollen  and at times i feel really bloated. The reason why they(boss & co-workers) told me to go to the doctor is because my ankles swell and my feet always hurt. I also get indentions and creases in my skin even from my pillow when i wake up and they stay for quite some time. They told me i would probably just get some water pills but then i was told water rentention also happens when you're pregnant. I have had my periods but they said you can still have your period when pregnant. I have weighed around 130lbs and now i weigh 162. I gained that over a period of a month or so. I really dont feel like its pregnancy but i am still scared to death.  My engagement ring doesnt fit anymore and my clothes are tight. lol.

What  do you think? Should i be scared?
When I retain anything, I can literally feel my bra straps digging into my skin. So that is my indication, haha

I had lap band surgery 3 weeks ago.  I was shocked to get on the scale yesterday and see that I have gained 4 lbs.  As soon as the doctor told me I could start walking I started and have walked every day for the past 8 days.  My ankles & feet are swollen and I know I am retaining water, but don't know why.  My jeans are about to fall off now, and yet I am heavier.  It's hard to accept that I am building muscel & retaining water.  I love walking and I hope the water weight will go away soon.

I wonder if I am retaining water because when I press on my skin the white mark stays for a long time...I try to drink 8 glasses a day of water. For the last three years my weight has stayed between 165lb and 175lbs, but then suddenly withing 8weeks I gained 30lbs and it's been with me ever since. I start working out and end up gaining weight...which doesn't come back off. I get bummed out and then don't work out anymore. Part of me hopes it's water retention...I'm not pregnant and I don't usually eat more food than I burn off.

Great timing for this topic to resurface!

I AM currently wondering if I'm retaining water. I'm not too sure myself.

But I'm having these symptoms:

"When I retain anything, I can literally feel my bra straps digging into my skin. So that is my indication, haha"

"workout clothes are feeling snug"

BUT it's been going on for about nearly a week. So I'm worried. =(
