A Mile-stone

Quote  |  Reply

I ran an entire mile today, for the first time ever. It was slow (12:30) and a little bit miserable, and I've been training for 3 months and just now achieved this, but there it is. I'm proud that I finally did it.

Any other runners out there feel like that was a huge milestone? What was your experience like?

Way to go!!! Awesome!! The first mile is always the hardest!

Wow! 1 mile - that's nearly 2 km!!! You are doing well - don't even think about the time you have done it in - 1 mile running is a tremendous achievement! I can not relate to your running (yet) but I clearly remember when I was able to swim 1 whole length in the pool. (I was 169 kg - 372 pounds then.) Totally out of breath and wondering what the hell I was trying to achieve..... So now it is 16 months later and I do 40 to 60 pool lengths after my usual gym exercise. And I am nearly 90 pounds lighter. So - go for it, just don't overdo your running: think about your joints and muscles. I usually have a rest day or even 2 after a good, strong work out.

Woot! I've never been a runner, everyone told me to take it easy because of my asthma. I was even excused from gym on multiple occasions in middle school. (Totally helpful right?)

Saturday night I was mad at my fiance so I went out to the track while he was in the weight room. I went around 12 times running the long sides and walking the short ones. I found out the next day that it was 2 miles! Took 40 minutes but wow that was a shock. Now I wanna train up for a warrior dash course 3 rough miles plus obstacles.

That's awesome!  I'm jealous!  The first time I got on the treadmill, I was only able to jog for 15 seconds.  I am now up to 2 minutes and can't wait to be able to say I did a whole mile.  Keep up the good work!

Really excellent..

I used to run a lot.. or should I say plod along... never fast but steady.  The first 10K I finished was just so cool.... I felt like I was on top of the world.  There  was a national 10K (Cow Harbor) race that I entered a couple times.  Eventually I bought my first house right along the course.   The Cow Harbor Race was the biggest event in town.  Everyone supported the runners.. there were bagpipes and a beer wagon at the end..AT the top of the last uphill one homeowner always had a tape of "born to run" playing.

I was never a runner when I was younger, hated the idea of running, but once I started going to the gym I just kept having the urge to want to run.  When I finally started, I have to say it was the hardest thing I've done in the gym, but after about a month and a half of working on the C25K program, I finally ran for 20min straight, which was over a mile.  It was the best feeling in the world!  I still feel good just being able to run a mile.  I have been working on upping my speed for my mile run and have been doing great so far.  Keep up the good work!

I remember my first mile, that was the hardest. Good job!! I have been running for slightly over a year now, I have slowly increased my distance and am planning on running half-marathon next month. You should consider signing up for a 5K, good job and stay with it :).

Great job! I've been running for about a year. My first goal was to finish a 5k-which took about 6 months and my time was about 45:00 min. Don't worry about the speed-enjoy the freedom of running, enjoy the fact that you can run.Pick out a run/walk that you want to do a few months out and have fun. The sense of accomplishment is amazing. Speed will come with time and practice.

That's AMAZING!  My first mile clocked in around 14 minutes lol.  It also took me a while, and I was really proud of myself because I had always gotten doctors notes out of running "the mile" in K-12.  Now, I can run 1 mile in 8 minutes, I'm up to running 11 miles, and I'm running a half marathon in 3 weeks :)  Stick with it, come up with a consistent and definitive plan, and you can achieve any running goal you set your mind to!

Way to Go!!!  Doesn't matter the time you did it in...fact remains that you DID IT!!

Congratulations!

Thank you, thank you for sharing your mile stone. It gives us all courage not to abandon. Hopefully one day soon I will get there too.

I'm about to run my first half-marathon in two weeks and I know the feeling is going to be the exact same!

Congrats!!! If you can do one mile... You can do as many as you'd like :)

Very good! Small steps and victories are all we can ask for.

After almost 20 years of no real exerise, I went back to the gym a little over 2 years ago.

I too started by just walking quickly and the like. Top say I am not a good jogger/runner is an understatement.

With exercise and Calorie Count, I am 55-60 pounds lighter and do 3 miles on the treadmill and 15 minutes on the stairmaster 2 or 3 times a week. A week ago, I did a fundraising stair climb and did 52 floors in 12 minutes and 35 seconds.

Keep at it and enjoy the milestones! It is amazing how far you can go one small step at a time!

Good job

I have started the 1 mile run but really it was a mix of running and walking and jogging, my weight was at that time 114kg I managed to do it in 14:48 mins this was before 6 months

But now after that test that I did I have joined a fitness boot camp I lost 12 kg and managed to finish the 1 mile run in 12:46 mins

Keep the good spirt and go forward in breaking your old record

Go You!!!  Good work!

I started running in January, in the middle of the snow and freezing temps I would run 1/4 mile...then I worked up to 1/2 mile.  I would feel like I wanted to curl up and puke on the end of that 1/2 mile!

Now 4 months later I am at 2.5 miles!  I am super excited about it, and excited to hit 3!

I found after I ran 1 mile consistently its been even easier to add distance, except my hip complains about it!  I try to run no less than 3 days a week.

I try to run 12 minute miles, if I run faster I don't go as far.  I can run a mile now in 9 minutes...but then I want to pass out at the end of that mile! =)

Make sure you follow the rule of never increase your weekly distance over 10%....doing so sets u up for injury later on.

Way to go, I am still too heavy to do the running, I can walk 2 miles, just too heavy to run yet.  I am so anxious to make the announcement you have made.  One day I will,  Super big congrats, that is such a major milestone.

I also was never a runner as a youth or young woman; I waited until I was almost 50 to start!  5 years later I still can't quite establish a truly regular practice but I refuse to quit trying.  I can run between 1 and 1 3/4 miles, and my average is about 14 minutes!  I used to describe myself as more of a plodder than a runner, but Christine Luft, the guide at running@about.com, says that if you do any sort of running, you ARE a runner.  Keep it up--I figure the fact that I'm still running at all is my victory :)

You should be feeling very very proud of yourself. Running a whole mile is incredible, it doesn't matter how fast you ran, that will improve over time. the main thing is you did it. Well done!

Who cares what time you did it in at least you did it and well done to you.  that will be your bench mark from now on and it will get easier and better.  keep it going and keep me informed how you are doing.
