Walking Off the Weight 2
Hello all!
I credit my taking up walking, in conjuction with the awesome cc, with my weight loss success thus far this summer..... I know there are many others out there, walking away the pounds, the stress, the stuff in life that needs to be sweated out, so join us here! We had discussions in WOTW1 from where we liked to walk to how to improve the walking work out after it had gotten too easy, blisters and bras, to how to get the SO to come along with you, so if it's related to walking, it can go here! ( :
Just FYI, but I think I am offically a "wogger" now -- I almost can't say that word without laughing (credit Jess who found it). So let's say walkers, wanna be walkers who need encouragement, woggers, even joggers if they promise not to make fun! =P Hope to see allmy old friends here + and a lot of new ones too!
So---Rock on with your walkin', girls and boys! --Olivia

I would like to join in on this. I have been walking for weightloss for 5 years so far. I have started jogging spurts in there this summer. can't do much more than 5 min at a time mostly 3 min.I walk / jog the first 4-5 miles walk the next 3-4 miles.
However the weightloss part is at a standstill again .
However the weightloss part is at a standstill again .
I have been benched from walking per my doctor for 3 weeks due to plantar faciitis and I'm itching to get back to it come Friday!
I walk with a single or double jog stroller up and down, up and down our hilly neighborhood about 3.5 miles in about an hour. I do some weight training afterwards but I've read that it's better to do weight training prior to cardio. Does anyone incorporate weights into their routine? And when?
Thanks!

Good morning all,
hey olivia/meg, I am very happy to join I am still walking and thanks to olivia's previous post on walking I am now happily walking without blisters! I am a begginer so I am only walking a mile but I think I will be upping that shortly. It takes me about 20 mins to walk a mile. Is that ok? And also my shins are killing me any exercises I can do before walking for that? And are 5lb weight ok or too heavy?

Once again, the little voice in my head woke me at 5:30 and said "get out there & walk!" So, on with the sneaks (I find Ryka walking shoes work best for me) and out the door. BLAM! the humidity hit me like a brick, and I kept thinking it was going to start pouring any minute, but the voice said "keep walking"...so on I went. My goal this week is to work up to 45 min and a more vigorous pace. I made 40 this AM! But I sure was glad to get back into the A/C'ed house!!
Rather flat in my neighborhood, but I'm thinking of walking westward where there are some inclines. Little goals at a time! I don't carry any weights, unless you count a water bottle in one hand and cell phone/keys in the other ;) Gotta find my "fanny" pack (OMG who thouhgt up that name??) for those so I can add weights eventually. Now where the heck is that pedometer hiding??
I had that plantar facitis, also with a version of carpal tunnel in my ankle, and it kept me off walking and areobics TWO YEARS!! Got a lot of catching up to do.....

Greetings! It was a stormy morning here in NYC, but I plan to get out for my daily walk later this morning before it gets too hot.
Good Morning!
Also sticky here in Michigan, but I got up early and walked anyhow (also very happy to get back to the AC!). AND weighed myself this morning and the scale is finally below 200!! WooHoo!! Walking is SO worth it!
ameresmom--you might want to stretch your calves really well before you walk, a Google search gives good stretch ideas. My shins were somewhat sore at first, but it did go away once I began stretching first. I believe a recommendation for good shoes is also in order.
Everybody have a terrific day! I am off to PT to work that shoulder,
Wendy

YAY! (glad you found the new WOTW)
After snippy start to the morning because I haven't bought any breakfast (or any other) foods in a long time, the boyfriend is starting to whine and moan about having to fend for himself----I told him to suck it up basically. He complains about his pants being too darn tight, but I have yet to get him to walk/jog/wog with me or really to eat right with me either. (Sometimes he'll eat whatever supper I fixed with no complaints, but more likely he went and got something or micro'd some burritos...sigh..... ANYWHO, so after a rough start this AM, I got the best mood booster.... I'm huffing and puffing along the 1.5 mile loopy/cul-de-sac I do 3-4 times around, and I notice one of the nicer houses had a huge sprikler watering their lawn and the birds are having a PARTY in it, playing and splashing around like little kids... So I am laughing to myelf, feeling at one with the universe, and I realize the lady owner is watching me. (blush) So I take off my headphones and compliment her lawn, flowers, point out the funy birds including the two hummingbirds I saw, and we talk for just a second. I start to walk on, and she says, hey! I really admire you! It might sound weird, but I noticed when you first start walking this summer, and you look like you've lost a lot of weight now!
I teared up just a little, of course, said thank you, and went on my way, but GOSH! Sometimes it takes someone not so close to you to see what you can't see for yourself!
Anyway....
nevins--- You blow my mind if you are walking that much in this heat. I got out at 6:10 AM and it was already 96! Why do you think the pounds are standing still...?
meg--- I think the weights before cardio is when you are REALLY lifting.... Like if you did cardio first, then when you went to bench press 500 lbs, you'd be too worn out from running etc. Please, someone, correct me if I have that wrong..... That said, I do lift light weights, like 10 lb dumb bells, almost every day on top of my 5ish miles wogging..... (I am trying to banish as much arm fat as possible for a bridesmaid gig September 8th...) I DO walk with 2 lb handweights..... More on that later since amaresmom mentioned a question about handweights.....
amaresmom!!! I haven't seen you in a while and was worried. I am stoked you're still walking and blister-free! I wanted to send pandajenn (the runner at cc who helped me) a HUGE bouquet of flowers or something the first day I came home in no pain with no new blisters! Q1: I think your 20 minute time is good----it will get faster by default if you just keep walking.... I always like to apply the track runners science to myself if I can feel myself tiring, slowing down, etc----- I had the fastest kid ever tell me, "just swing your arms as fast as you can!" (and your legs will move faster too), so I swing those handweights as fast and hard as I can, and it does help! Q2: Are you stretching well before you walk? I don;t really do much stretching anymore EXCEPT my ankles and shins---do you have good shoes...? It helped me to get better ones. My shins used to ache by the time I was done---I think stretching and honestly, jsut losing a few pounds made that go away. ( : Q3: I;m torn on you 5 lb handweight question, Tanji..... Um, I don;t think I (me, myself) could walk with 5 pounders unless I was walking somewhere I could put them down and take a break for a minute if I wanted. I can feel it in my arms, shoulders, and back with 2 lb weights, so I guess my answer is I don;t know.... Try it with the 5's and go around the block (or a short distance) and see how you feel. I think you'll know! ( : Let us know.... I've been too pussified to try it with my 5lbs, just knowing how the 2's make me feel. SO MEG-- yes, walk with weights if you aren't pushing the stroller some time!
YAY for kris, the other, early morning riser! It was already HOT at 6:10 this morning here too, so I feel your pain! BUT your body will thank you for it...... I would always encourage people to take new routes. I get bored SO EASILY and that has been what saved me this summer.....that and changing it up----I befriended a neighbor, so I could walk her adorable puppy. I got an mp3 player for motivation! (AWSEOME!) I found some new directions to walk, parks to play at, scenery to look at, etc. It made all the difference! ( : ALso, I got an arm pouch for my radio and I think something like that would work perfectly for keys/cell, kris.... My work out capris have a secret pocket in the inside hip for exactly that, like a key..... Can you leave the water at a check point safely, then make the rounds around it to free up your hands for weights? (ignore me--just trying to problem solve!) I love the weights----I think that absolutely contributed to my being stronger, able to do pushups for once, my back, arms, and bra fat feeling more firm and less flabby. All good! ( : (fanny packs----god, just the name, let alone the 80's image, makes me laugh.....)

Olivia, thanks for the tip about the weights before and after cardio debate. What you said makes sense to me. I'm only use 5 and 8 pound weights for my at home circuit and I don't feel too fatigued after my walk to use proper form. I also appreciate the warm-up of the walk.
Tanji, find a stretching routine that works for you and then do it before and after each workout, additionally stretch every morning upon waking. This has made a world of difference in my aches and pains!
To all of you morning walkers who got out in the heat and humidity -- congratulations. You are an inspiration.

lol, meg!
I was just parroting what I've heard here and what worked for me. I mean if I was doing really heavy weights, I might feel differently, but I do like you, a little at a time before and after.... Whatever works, I think....
And as far as being inspiring, right backatcha! And really, I am just being as selfish as possible, taking every last free morning of summer I have and sweating it away because school start next week. I will have to walk/work out at 5 PM vs. 7 AM, and I am not look forweard to it at all......... I am looking forward to fall temperatures even more this year than ever before for that exact reason! ( : Come on, autumn!!!!

I haven't tried 5 pound weights yet walking, I use 3 pounds, kinda challenge while jogging LOL

Hey walking people! I have been dedicated to my morning walks for about a month now, and love it! I have added in a little bit of jogging, so does that make me officially a "wogger'? Ha!
Sore shin issues: Here is what a trainer and also an ortho. surgeon told me once: Shin splints are caused because your calf muscles are getting stronger/more use, and basically they tighten and pull on the muscles on the front of your leg - sort of actually pulling them off your leg if that makes any sense - little fibers are getting pulled out, thats what makes it hurt. Stretching helps (she taught me to use a curb, place the ball of your foot on the curb and gently press your heel down for a few seconds) but even more important is to strengthen those front leg muscles - they don't really get that much work while walking, so what you want to do (and it looks really silly) is lay on your back at home, feet in the air and flex your feet - front and back, side to side. You will really feel it in those front muscles, and it makes a world of difference. Haven't had shin splints since using these techniques..I am particularly prone to shin splints because my hip sockets point to the side rather than straight forward - great for ballet turn out, if I ever had any talent as a ballet dancer way back in the day, but not so great for aerobic excercise, since the pressure on my legs is all wrong...
sorry for the length of this, hope my ideas help!

Thanks to you all I can't wait to get off work to walk today. And yes, I will find better streches to do because although I knew That I was a little lax on it since it was only walking. I definitely need new runners but can't afford them (my son's having a birthday party he insisted on it he's 4 on 8/19 Chuck E Cheese) so I am broke until then LOL but I have some Puma's to hold me over until I get the Nike's I have been eyeing for a month now. As for the weights thank you all for the feed back, My hubby (who like olivia's husband hasn't worked out or walked with me yet and still frys chicken in my presence) insisted that I should be using 5lb weights and after my workout with them I could have killed that man! So I will get some lighter ones maybe 3lbs atleast. I can't wait to get home I'm in NYC also southfork so as you know we have had a horrible day after the storm all trains were shut down so maybe I will just walk home.
Thanks lawcat we must have posted at the same time so I missed it. I will keep you posted. I will try it tonight. Am I thr only one who walks at night?
moms- nope, I walk more at night then morning. Only time I walk mornings if I have something going on that evening and want to get some exercise in for the day. I feel sooo much more stressed in the morning and worry about getting done in time to get ready for work, that I don't enjoy it as much as the evening. OMG, have funny at Chucky Cheese - I did that for my daughter's 5th birthday- she is 25 now and I still remember it...... LOL she invited the whole kindergarten class - yes I was crazy back then LOL
Okay here's my dramatic walking story from today. The hard rains this morning flooded the subways so the subways were either closed or delayed during the morning rush hour. The MTA (transit authority) announced that everyone should delay going to work. The busses were running, but because there weren't any trains, the busses were too full. That meant that all the taxis were taken also.
I had a professional appointment in Brooklyn across the East River scheduled for noon. I had to look dressy for the appointment.
With the subways out, the busses and taxis too crowded, the only option for most all New Yorker was to walk.
So I ended up combining exercise with work by walking downtown and then across the Brooklyn Bridge! It was about 3-4 miles. There were hundreds of us walking across the bridge in hot steamy weather, all in nice work clothes!
Fortunately the subways started running by the time I needed to come home.
I'm exhausted.

*crazy proud of southfork* freak out, dude! but good for you -- rest and relax!
I still remember my little bro's only birthday party at the original Showbiz (Show Biz?) Pizza! SHowbiz was way better than Chuck E. Cheese, but that's only because I was 8 then.... Anyway, he was turning four, FLIPPED out when the big bear came off the stage to hug him for a bday picture, and he head-butted bear boy in the crotch. LOL Amare will LOVE it, Tanji----it's crazy $$ but super fun for the little ones.... And to your question, i will soon be joining you and vicki for evening walks after work...... SADLY. I sure wish I could somehow walk in the am, shower, and be ready to leave at 630AM for my 45 minutes commute to work.... I had to join and accountability challenge to make sure I would make myself keep working out every day once school starts, BUT I'm GONNA----I did not make it this far for nothing! ( : And shame on your man, chicky!!! He would be more than fine with 5 lb weights----he's a dude!!! I'm sorry, but unless you are hiding the Arnold muscles in the photos of your gorgeous self, then I think 2 or 3 lb weights are the perfect size to walk with..... Here's my thing---I want to be able to safely hold both weights in one hand for sweat wiping, mp3 changing, etc AND be able to keep going while I am adjusting et al.... Give him some crap that you tore out both elbows doing it with 5's~~ I would. =P Men-----if we were exactly like them and able to do everything the same way the do, why the heck would they need us as badly as they do????? (EVIL LOL) ( :
LOL lawcat---- you got it, girl! I love wogging -- Good advice on the shins! I only got started because the little puppy that I walk wanted to run REALLY the first time I walked him. I was shocked to realize I **could** jog close to 2 miles without stopping to walk too much, so the rest is wogging history!!!

OMG south!! that had to be a sight to see this morning all those walkers, and in this heat. Cleveland had flash flooding yesterday afternoon, but I work and live in the suburbs so wasn't effected at all.
Olivia - funny how you remember things like that LMAO!!! I jointed the August exercise challenge also with 1250 for the month. I was able to do it June/July barely, so I knew August was going to be hard with alot going on. I can't imagine carrying 5 lb weights to walk, like you always adjusting something or other, and we already talked abut the cordination problems we have!! LOL

Hi...Im new here and just wanted to say that for the last two years I walk 50 minutes each day whenever possible. I watch what I eat and exercise for twenty minutes five times a week. I've lost 43 lbs so far. I'm motivated simply by one picture of myself taken almost 40 years ago.
vicki---LOL, I have all kinds of we put the fun in dysfunctional type memories of my single mom and 2 younger sibs... ( : We are quite the crew! I would be absolutely dangerous walking with 5 lb weights..... scary.
south---I just saw the crazy terrible news report of New York--yowza!
welcome, sloan! Tell us more..... I can never resist a good story, so is the pic of.......a school dance perhaps? Where from, good job so far on the pounds too, wow! ( :
walk on, girls!
