What's your inspirational quote, image, mantra, etc ?

What do you tell yourself to keep yourself motivated? I like "A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips". I also have an image of me skinny on my mirror that helps. Another thing is a posting on the fridge that says "How hungry are you?" with a rating of 0-10. It really helps me to stop and think if I'm eating for my brain or for my stomach.

I just try to remind myself that I'm too smart to be fat.  I KNOW the damage that being overweight is doing to my body.  I KNOW the benefits of exercise.  I KNOW that stress eating doesn't actually solve anything.  When I can stop and remind myself of that, I usually make good decisions.

Knowing is half the battle! GO JOE!

I agree phylbean. I find knowing what's in it is a deterrent too. I remember making fudge from scratch years ago. It's basically sugar, butter and a touch of chocolate. I knew it was bad but that bad? I never touched it since.

Another helpful thought:

If I feel like snacking on low-quality food or giving up in the middle of my workout, I force myself to take a brief moment to bid farewell to the sixpack I'm working towards seeing :D. Here's how the conversation goes:

(me speaking to my imaginary sixpack): I've decided we should stop seeing each other. It's not you, it's me.. I'm not ready for commitment/there's someone else. 

Sixpack: what has that cookie got that I don't have?

Basically I pause to reconsider what I'm giving up on by giving in. Is it worth it? 

 

 

I have a lot of phrases that inform my approach to weight-control....

And the other is a memory of a recent family day out where I met a young Dad who had been paralysed from the neck down in an accident.  He'd have sold his soul to be able to simply get up out of his wheelchair, discard the breathing tube and kick a ball with his kids.  Whenever exercise feels like too much bother, I remind myself of him and think how lucky I am to have a fully working body.....

My general motivation for myself is that I shouldn't be in the worst shape of my life at age 25 - in fact I am finished with being in the worst shape of my life EVER. From now on I'm striving to be in the best shape of my life - from now on I want to be able to say to myself "I am in the best shape of my life!"

I am sooooo stealing that!!! :) I love it. I really like a lot of the other quotes too!!

The image that I have is me looking uber chic in a swim suit (I don't think I've ever worn a 2 piece in my life. Oh and of course..Beyonce's body!

My favorite one, that I saw somewhere here, is "My body is not a garbage can."

I repeat that to myself every time I want something like a greasy burger or a sugary doughnut. And I've got it written in big red letters somewhere in the first few pages of every journal, with an entry about my weight loss and what it means to me.

It works in tandem with something this nutrition-obsessed guy once told me - "I don't think of food as something to be enjoyed, I just think of it in terms of proteins, fat grams and calories." Not that *I* am like that (I LOVE good food; but only REALLY good food), but I try to see the tempting "bad" foods for what they are - lumps of useless sugar or fat, with very little nutritional value. Garbage. And my body is not a garbage can. (Unfortunately, that mantra only works with cheap junk foods. Gourmet stuff is my weakness. Thank God it's expensive.)

I generally just try to always think in terms of what "makes my body happy." Like, literally, sometimes, after a work-out, I'll sorta say to it (in my head), "yeah, that was GOOD, wasn't it? You're WELCOME and thank YOU!"

Yeah, I'm a little nuts :)
